Effective digital marketing starts with a business outcome and a real customer need—not a platform, tool, or trend. Set a clear goal, choose channels that fit the audience and the job to be done, then measure results and adjust. For a small business or independent operator, this approach also helps keep marketing spend tied to decisions that can support revenue, retention, or another defined priority.

How do I build a digital marketing strategy?

There is no single framework that suits every organization. Gartner’s guidance instead points to a practical cycle: define the goal and audience, decide what marketing must do for them, select channels and messages, assign responsibility, execute, measure, and adjust. The plan should identify the skills, tools, and processes needed to deliver it—not just list platforms or campaign ideas. Gartner’s digital marketing strategy guidance describes a strategy as something that should evolve with customer behavior, technology, and business goals.

1. Choose an outcome and a customer need

Start with a specific business outcome, such as generating qualified inquiries, improving repeat purchases, or helping customers understand a complex offer. Define the audience narrowly enough to make a useful choice about message and channel. Then state the customer need or question the marketing will address. This keeps activity—such as publishing more posts—from being mistaken for progress.

2. Set a small, connected measurement plan

Choose a primary outcome measure and a few supporting measures that explain movement toward it. For example, a campaign intended to generate inquiries might track qualified inquiries as its main result, while also watching response rate and cost per inquiry. The appropriate measures depend on the business objective; there is no universal target established for every business or channel.

Agree on definitions before reporting: what counts as a qualified inquiry, a conversion, or a repeat customer; which channels receive credit; and how long the measurement window is. Gartner reports that 80% of digital marketing leaders struggle to define consistent multichannel metrics. Its page reports difficulty for 86% of teams using siloed approaches and 67% of teams using a holistic model; the page does not state the survey year or detailed sample, so these are Gartner-reported findings rather than current universal rates. Gartner’s strategy guidance also reports that 57% of organizations with connected data sources said marketing analytics had not had the expected effect on decision-making, with year and survey details not stated there.

3. Assign ownership and check feasibility

For each objective, name who is responsible for the plan, execution, data, and review. Assess whether the team has the skills, time, tools, and processes to carry it out. If it does not, narrow the plan or address the gap before adding channels. A tool is useful only if it supports a defined task and can be operated and evaluated responsibly.

Which digital marketing channels should I choose?

Choose channels according to audience, purpose, and the customer journey—not because every competitor appears to use them. Gartner recommends planning, executing, and measuring channel activity holistically across the funnel. Paid search can be useful when a person is expressing real-time intent through a search; adaptable video creative is another option when video fits the audience and can be made to work across platforms and devices. Neither is a requirement for every organization.

Use these questions to compare the options that are actually available to your team:

  • Audience and intent: Can the channel reach the people you need, and are they likely to be researching, comparing, or ready to act?
  • Journey role: What should it help the audience do next—discover an offer, understand it, evaluate it, or return?
  • Cost and effort: What are the media, production, staffing, and ongoing management demands? Check whether those costs fit the budget and the outcome being pursued.
  • Format: Can you produce material suited to the channel and adapt it for the placements or devices you intend to use?
  • Measurement: Can you connect activity to an agreed outcome without relying on inconsistent definitions or crediting multiple channels for the same result?
  • Data and privacy: What information will the channel collect or use, and can you explain and manage that use transparently?

Coordinate channels around a consistent customer experience. A person who first encounters an offer in one place should not receive conflicting claims or an unrelated next step elsewhere. Review performance across the journey as well as by individual channel, while keeping the measurement definitions consistent.

Which digital marketing trends matter now?

Trend reports are useful for generating testable ideas, not for proving that a tactic will work for every business. The sources below combine expert foresight, vendor-published trend material, and survey findings with different populations and methods; they should not be read as one comparable forecast.

Signal What the evidence says Practical use
AI agents and automation The American Marketing Association’s 2026 Future Trends report names the age of autonomous agents as one of five forces it expects to shape marketing over the next five to ten years. Its modified Delphi and foresight process involved more than 30 marketing professionals from May to August 2025, mainly in North America with additional global representation; it is expert foresight, not a representative consumer survey. AMA’s 2026 report also names portfolio careers and a liquid workforce, sustainability innovation, discovery shifting to scroll, and trust in a fragmented world. Identify a specific repetitive or decision-support task to test, and keep a person accountable for the result.
Discovery through video and scrolling Google’s 2025 trend article discusses shoppable video and discovery shifting toward scrolling. In a Google/Kantar U.K. study conducted March 25–April 6, 2024, 62% of surveyed YouTube viewers agreed YouTube helps them decide what to purchase; the study included 1,035 YouTube viewers and 2,225 weekly video viewers aged 18–64. This describes those surveyed viewers, not all consumers. Think with Google’s article also reports a Google/Ipsos study conducted in March 2024 among 6,000 online shoppers aged 18 and older in Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the U.K.; two-thirds said they had delayed or avoided a decision when faced with too many options or too much information. Consider whether useful video or a simpler path to decision-making serves your audience. Do not infer that a particular video or commerce format will deliver results for your business.
Trust and responsible marketing Trust in a fragmented world is one of the AMA report’s five forces. Google’s article discusses mindful and ethical marketing. Salesforce’s February 20, 2026 summary of its State of Marketing survey says 68% of customers surveyed thought AI advances make company trust more important; the summary does not fully describe sampling and geography. Salesforce’s 2026 summary also reports that 34% of surveyed marketers were completely satisfied with efforts to realize value from AI. Make clear claims, recognizable advertising, and transparent data practices part of campaign design rather than a later cleanup step.
More deliberate AI adoption In the same Salesforce survey summary, 71% of surveyed marketers planned to use both predictive and generative AI within the following 18 months. This is a reported intention among survey respondents, not a guarantee of adoption or effectiveness across the market. Salesforce says the survey included more than 4,800 marketers. Treat planned adoption as a reason to evaluate use cases and governance, not a reason to deploy AI without a defined need.

Google’s article also discusses app engagement. Its other cited figures include secondary references to outside sources and are not needed to decide whether a trend fits a particular organization. More broadly, distinguish a forecast, a vendor’s interpretation, and a survey result before using any trend statistic to justify spending.

How should I measure digital marketing performance?

Measurement should help someone make a decision: continue, change, or stop an activity. Track the result that matters to the business, plus enough supporting information to understand what may have influenced it. Report channel-level data where it helps diagnose performance, but use common definitions so that separate channel reports can be interpreted together.

  • Connect activity to an outcome: Pair reach or engagement measures with a business result relevant to the objective, such as qualified inquiries, sales, or retention.
  • Use consistent definitions: Document what counts as a result, the attribution approach, and the reporting period. Do not compare metrics that use different definitions as if they were equivalent.
  • Check data quality and context: Look for missing or duplicated records, changes in tracking, and timing effects before attributing a change to a campaign.
  • Review across the journey: A channel can contribute before a purchase without receiving the final interaction. Consider the role of each touchpoint rather than relying on a single isolated report.
  • Make a decision and record it: Note what changed, why, and what result would justify another adjustment. This makes experimentation more useful than simply accumulating dashboards.

More data is not automatically better analysis. Gartner recommends building a sound analytics foundation and using consent-based first-party data touchpoints, privacy-aware targeting, and customer control. If a measure cannot be trusted or does not inform a decision, collecting more of it may add complexity without improving marketing.

How can I use AI in marketing responsibly?

Start with a defined task—such as helping draft variations for human review or organizing information for analysis—and decide what success means before scaling it. Gartner advises marketers to establish governance, adapt roles and structures for human-AI work, and judge AI through business outcomes such as customer satisfaction, conversion, or campaign performance, not time saved alone. Gartner’s AI in marketing guidance says useful output should align with the brand, meet accuracy standards, support strategy, and have review processes in place.

  • Set standards for factual accuracy, tone, brand fit, and permitted use of customer information.
  • Assign a human owner to review outputs before they reach customers or influence important decisions.
  • Check outputs for unsupported claims, errors, bias, and inappropriate disclosure of private or confidential information.
  • Compare results with the defined business measure, and revise or stop the use case if it does not meet the standard.

AI can help with production or analysis, but it does not replace responsibility for the accuracy of a claim, the treatment of customer data, or the outcome of a campaign.

How do I protect customer trust and meet advertising obligations?

Make advertising recognizable, disclose material connections, and ensure claims and reviews are truthful. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission’s online advertising guidance says details of a deal should be disclosed up front. It addresses effective online disclosures, genuine customer reviews, advertiser–endorser connections—including influencer relationships—truthful app claims, privacy transparency, and whether consumers can distinguish native advertising from surrounding content. Read the FTC’s online advertising and marketing guidance.

FTC guidance is U.S.-specific; legal obligations vary by jurisdiction, campaign, and context. Check the current requirements that apply to the market where an advertisement will appear. In practice, make disclosures easy to notice and understand, avoid presenting paid or otherwise connected endorsements as independent opinions, and do not use reviews that fail to reflect genuine customer feedback.

When should I revisit the plan?

Review the strategy when business priorities, audience needs, channel behavior, technology, or measurement conditions change. Use trend reports to identify a small number of relevant experiments, then set a clear hypothesis, audience, success measure, review point, and stop-or-scale decision for each. A tactic that does not fit the objective, available resources, or customer expectations does not become necessary simply because it is receiving attention.
