Mark Zuckerberg wore a Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 in the video announcing Meta’s planned U.S. content-moderation changes on January 7, 2025. The watch was reported at about $895,500 before taxes or around $906,000, making “$1 million” a rounded description—not a confirmed current price. Its appearance drew criticism from some commentators, but the available reporting does not show that reaction was representative or establish why Zuckerberg chose it.
What watch was Mark Zuckerberg wearing?
It was identified as the Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1, an exceptionally labor-intensive mechanical watch. Time+Tide’s January 8, 2025 report describes a 43.5 mm white-gold case, an open dial and a tourbillon at 7 o’clock. It says the watch is made largely by hand with hand tools rather than automation, with exceptions including the gaskets and crystal.

Time+Tide reported that Greubel Forsey estimated roughly 6,000 man-hours to make one and could produce about three a year. Those are figures reported by the publication as brand claims, not independently verified current specifications. The brand’s linked product page was unavailable when the reporting was reviewed.
How much does the Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 cost?
The coverage gives two different reported figures. The Guardian said Bloomberg had reported a retail price of US$895,500 before taxes. Time+Tide described the watch as worth around US$906,000. These are source-specific reports, not evidence of a completed sale or a current dealer quote. The title’s “$1 million” is a rounded approximation.

What Meta announced on January 7, 2025
In a post by Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan, Meta said it would begin in the United States by ending its third-party fact-checking program and moving toward a Community Notes model. The company also announced plans to lift some restrictions on topics, focus automated enforcement on illegal and high-severity violations, and give users a more personalized approach to political content recommendations. Meta presented the changes as a way to reduce enforcement mistakes and support free expression; that is the company’s stated rationale, not an independently established result. Meta’s January 7 announcement says the company would not write Community Notes or decide which notes appear once the program was running.
Meta said its December 2024 estimate was that “one to two out of every 10” enforcement actions might have been mistakes. The company also said it removed millions of pieces of content daily, representing less than 1% of content produced each day. In a May 29, 2025 update, Meta reported a roughly 50% reduction in U.S. enforcement mistakes between Q4 2024 and Q1 2025, while saying the low prevalence of violating content remained largely unchanged for most problem areas. These are company-reported figures and should be understood as such, not as independent measurements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did the watch become part of the story?
The watch appeared in a video about contentious changes to how Meta handles political speech and other disputed subjects. Time+Tide’s Jamie Weiss reported that some observers criticized the juxtaposition as tone-deaf or out of touch: an extraordinarily expensive object worn while announcing policy changes that affect public debate. The coverage provides examples of online criticism, not a representative measure of public opinion.
That reaction is separate from the policy questions themselves. Meta’s post characterized the former system by saying, “A program intended to inform too often became a tool to censor.” That is Meta’s description of its reasoning, not a neutral finding. The watch’s appearance documents what Zuckerberg wore during the announcement; the sources do not establish his reason for wearing it or show that it caused the policy controversy.
What the reported price does—and does not—tell you
For a personal-finance reader, the figures are a reminder to distinguish a reported retail price from a current asking price, a completed transaction and a resale valuation. The Hand Made 1’s reported production scale and labor help explain why it is presented as a rare luxury object, but they do not independently prove what a particular example would sell for. No current dealer stock or verified current price is established by the cited reports.
