MariaDB completed its acquisition of GridGain Systems on March 24, 2026. The deal brings GridGain’s in-memory computing technology into MariaDB’s product portfolio, which MariaDB says will help it serve high-velocity transactional, analytical and AI workloads. The acquisition is complete; the performance benefits and product roadmap described by the companies should be treated as vendor claims and plans, not independently validated results.

What does MariaDB’s GridGain acquisition mean?

MariaDB is combining its relational database and transactional capabilities with GridGain’s in-memory computing technology. The stated goal is to process fast-changing data for use cases such as real-time analytics and AI applications while retaining database durability. MariaDB presents this as a way to offer customers a broader platform rather than relying on separate systems for each workload. MariaDB’s completion announcement describes the strategic intent, not a neutral comparison or performance test.

MariaDB has used terms such as “sub-millisecond” to describe GridGain’s potential performance. That is a vendor characterization; the announcements do not establish an independently measured result that applies across workloads or deployments. Buyers should assess latency and throughput alongside durability and consistency needs, resilience and failover, security, deployment model, upgrade commitments, and the operational work involved in combining data services.

How does GridGain support AI applications?

AI applications often need data to be available quickly for tasks such as real-time analysis and responding to changing events. GridGain’s in-memory processing is intended to support those high-velocity workloads alongside MariaDB’s database capabilities. The acquisition did not, by itself, create every AI-related feature in MariaDB’s broader platform: its completion announcement also mentions vector capabilities, MCP support and MariaDB Exa analytics as elements of its overall product strategy.

MariaDB’s completion release quoted Gartner and IDC forecasts about enterprise AI adoption and the risks of poor data foundations. They are forecasts cited by MariaDB, not observed results: the release attributed to Gartner a projection that 40% of enterprise applications would feature task-specific AI agents by 2026, up from less than 5% in 2025; it attributed to IDC a projection of a 15% productivity loss by 2027 for companies that fail to establish high-quality, AI-ready data foundations. What is the difference between Apache Ignite and GridGain?

MariaDB describes GridGain as the original developer of Apache Ignite and calls Apache Ignite the open-source foundation of the GridGain ecosystem. Its customer update says GridGain’s commercial offerings add production-focused capabilities, including enterprise security, rolling upgrades, data-center replication, remote snapshots and heterogeneous restore, and Control Center. These are descriptions from MariaDB, not an independent feature comparison.

What is MariaDB saying about GridGain customers and the product roadmap?

In its customer update, MariaDB said it intends to keep investing in GridGain 8, including resilience, upgrades, vector and AI capabilities, and a dedicated Kubernetes Operator. It also said development of GridGain 9 would continue. These are roadmap statements; the update does not provide availability dates or guarantee when particular features will ship. For new customers, MariaDB said it was streamlining packaging around Enterprise Edition and Ultimate Edition. Its update also described GridGain use cases in payments, fraud prevention, risk management and customer 360 applications. These examples reflect MariaDB’s account of customer use, not independently documented deployment results.

Is GridGain available on MariaDB Cloud?

MariaDB’s customer update said the company was working to move GridGain offerings onto MariaDB Cloud and that initial offers were in active development, with a first Tech Preview anticipated for late summer. That statement is a plan, not confirmation that the preview launched or that a service is generally available. The cited update does not establish current cloud availability.

What remains unclear about the deal?

  • Financial terms: MariaDB’s official announcements do not state a purchase price, and ITPro reported that terms were not disclosed.
  • Verified performance: The company announcements do not provide an independent benchmark establishing general latency or throughput results.
  • Roadmap timing: MariaDB describes intended investments and cloud plans, but the customer update does not establish delivery dates or current availability for those plans.
