Margrethe Vestager left the European Commission when the outgoing College’s term ended on 31 October 2024; this was a scheduled institutional transition, not evidence of a sudden mid-term resignation. The new Commission took office on 1 December 2024, with Teresa Ribera Rodríguez named Executive Vice-President for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition.
Why Vestager was called the EU’s antitrust leader
“EU antitrust leader” is a common shorthand, not the formal name of Vestager’s office. She served as European Commission Competition Commissioner from 2014 to 2019, then as Executive Vice-President for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age and Competition from 2019 to 2024. The Commission’s archived profile lists enforcement and review of EU competition rules among her responsibilities, alongside strategic direction on digital policy and coordination on data and artificial intelligence.
Her formal roles therefore combined competition policy with broader Commission responsibilities; describing her simply as an antitrust chief captures part, but not all, of her remit.
When did Margrethe Vestager leave the European Commission?
The outgoing Commission’s term ended on 31 October 2024. The European Council appointed the next College for a term running from 1 December 2024 through 31 October 2029, as set out in its formal appointment decision. The interval between those dates does not, by itself, indicate a personal resignation or establish a reason for Vestager’s departure.

Key dates
- 2014–2019: European Commission Competition Commissioner.
- 2019–2024: Executive Vice-President for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age and Competition.
- 31 October 2024: End of the outgoing Commission’s term.
- 1 December 2024: The incoming Commission’s appointed term began.
Who replaced Vestager as EU competition chief?
The incoming Commission named Teresa Ribera Rodríguez Executive Vice-President for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition. That is the official portfolio wording recorded on the Commission’s commissioners-designate page. It is more precise to describe this as the new College’s portfolio arrangement than to say that every one of Vestager’s former responsibilities transferred to Ribera: the records establish Ribera’s title, not a complete one-to-one transfer of Vestager’s former remit.
What was Vestager’s announced post-Commission plan?
A European Commission decision dated 17 September 2024 records Vestager’s plan to accept an unpaid World Leaders Fellowship at Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government from 1 January 2025 to 1 January 2026. The decision says specified expenses would be covered during Oxford teaching periods and sets conditions relating to lobbying, discretion, and compatibility with her former office. It documents the planned appointment and the Commission’s assessment at that time; it does not confirm that she later completed the fellowship. The decision is available as a Commission PDF.

What is established about her reason for leaving?
The official records establishing Vestager’s roles, the end of the College’s term, and the incoming Commission’s appointment do not substantiate a personal motive for her departure. The dates support an account of a Commission transition; they do not support attributing the change to a particular personal or political reason.
