Most major U.S. banks and card issuers support Apple Pay, including Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, PNC, TD Bank, Truist, American Express, Discover, USAA, Navy Federal Credit Union, and Charles Schwab Bank.

The important qualification is that Apple Pay eligibility is determined by the specific card, not only by the bank’s name. A participating institution may exclude ATM-only cards, some business or corporate products, prepaid cards, legacy cards, co-branded products, or cards issued in particular territories. This guide covers the United States and reflects issuer and Apple information available as of August 10, 2026.

Major U.S. banks that support Apple Pay

Apple’s official participating-bank directory lists these institutions along with hundreds of regional banks, community banks, and credit unions. The table below focuses on major U.S. issuers and the card-specific qualifications they publish.

Bank of America Supports Apple Pay. Eligible products include Bank of America consumer credit and debit cards, Merrill Lynch consumer credit cards, U.S. Trust consumer credit and debit cards, and certain small-business debit cards. ATM-only cards are excluded. Bank of America also says cards issued in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are currently ineligible under its network limitations. Bank of America Apple Pay FAQs
Capital One Supports Apple Pay for eligible Capital One cards. Capital One provides Apple Pay enrollment for credit and debit cards, but exact eligibility can depend on the product and account status. The result shown in the Wallet app or Capital One app is the decisive test for an individual card. Capital One Apple Pay
Chase Supports Apple Pay. Many Chase Visa and Mastercard credit cards, debit cards, and Chase Liquid cards work with Apple Pay. Chase advises customers to check the particular card or call the number on its back when eligibility is unclear. Chase Apple Pay FAQs
Citi Supports Apple Pay. Citi says all U.S.-issued Citi-branded consumer credit and debit cards are eligible except ATM cards and Chairman cards. Certain Citi business cards are also eligible. Citi Apple Pay
Wells Fargo Supports Apple Pay. Most Wells Fargo Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards can be added. Wells Fargo may require additional verification during enrollment. Wells Fargo Apple Pay FAQs
U.S. Bank Supports Apple Pay and lists it among its supported digital wallets. U.S. Bank does not present a complete public product-by-product exclusion list on its current wallet page. Verify the specific card in the U.S. Bank app or Wallet. U.S. Bank digital wallets
PNC Supports Apple Pay. Eligible personal and small-business PNC Visa debit and credit cards can be used with Apple Pay. PNC Pay is a separate, primarily Android-oriented product; eligible PNC cards on iPhone use Apple Pay. PNC Apple Pay
TD Bank Supports Apple Pay. TD Bank’s U.S. digital-wallet guidance specifically describes adding eligible TD Bank Visa debit and credit cards. Eligibility should be checked for the particular card. TD Bank digital wallets
Truist Supports Apple Pay. Truist directs customers to add eligible cards through Card Controls in online or mobile banking. Its public guidance does not provide a complete product-level eligibility matrix. Truist contactless payments
American Express Supports Apple Pay. Eligible products include U.S. consumer and small-business credit or charge cards issued by American Express National Bank, certain Amex debit cards, selected U.S. corporate cards, and some prepaid products. A third-party-issued card carrying the American Express network must be checked with its actual issuer. American Express Apple Pay FAQs
Discover Supports Apple Pay. Discover lists eligible Discover it, Chrome, Miles, Student, Student Chrome, Discover More, and Discover it Secured cards. Discover is now part of Capital One. Capital One says Discover cards can continue to be added and used with Apple Pay, although some replacement cards may need to be updated manually. Discover Apple Pay and Capital One Discover FAQs
USAA Supports Apple Pay. USAA Visa debit and credit cards can be added through the USAA app or Wallet. USAA American Express cards must be added directly through Apple Wallet rather than through the USAA app. USAA Apple Pay FAQs
Navy Federal Credit Union Listed by Apple as a participating U.S. institution. Apple’s listing confirms institution participation, but it does not mean every Navy Federal card or business product is eligible. Check the specific card. Apple’s participating-bank directory
Charles Schwab Bank Listed by Apple as a participating U.S. institution. Eligibility remains card-specific. Contact Schwab if the Wallet app does not recognize the card as eligible. Apple’s participating-bank directory

Apple Card is a separate case

Apple Card should not be treated as ordinary Goldman Sachs bank support. Apple says Apple Card is available to qualifying U.S. applicants and is issued by Goldman Sachs Bank USA. It is designed to be managed and used through Apple Wallet, although cardholders can also use a physical titanium card and a virtual card number. See Apple’s Apple Card support page for current details.

  • Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.

In other words, it would be misleading to put Goldman Sachs in the same category as Chase or Bank of America and simply say that all Goldman Sachs cards support Apple Pay. Apple Card is a distinct Apple-branded card product.

The key distinction: bank participation is not card eligibility

When Apple or a bank says it supports Apple Pay, that statement can refer to several different things:

  1. The issuer participates. The bank has enabled one or more portfolios of cards for digital-wallet provisioning and tokenization.
  2. Your particular card is eligible. A participating bank can still exclude a particular card type, network, territory, business program, or account status.
  3. Your device can provision the card. You still need a compatible Apple device, supported operating-system software, an Apple Account, and a passcode or biometric authentication such as Face ID, Touch ID, or Optic ID. Apple lists the current requirements in its Apple Pay setup guide.
  4. The merchant accepts the payment. The merchant must support Apple Pay, NFC contactless payments for an in-store purchase, and the payment network used by your card.
  5. A special feature is supported. Purchases, Apple Cash transfers, transit, rewards redemption, installments, account-balance display, and cardless ATM access are separate capabilities. Support for one does not guarantee support for all the others.

This is why a bank can appear in Apple’s list while the Wallet app rejects one of its cards. Apple expressly warns that some cards from participating institutions may not be supported. The issuer, not Apple, decides whether a card can be provisioned.

Card categories that need extra checking

  • Debit cards: Most large banks support at least some consumer debit cards, but ATM-only, deposit-only, employee-only, and territory-issued cards may be excluded. Bank of America explicitly excludes ATM-only cards.
  • Credit cards: Mainstream consumer cards from major issuers are commonly eligible, but “all credit cards” is too broad unless the issuer specifically says so. Chase says many of its cards work, while Wells Fargo says most of its Visa and Mastercard cards work.
  • Business and corporate cards: Eligibility varies more than it does for consumer cards. Bank of America lists certain small-business debit cards; PNC lists eligible small-business Visa cards; and American Express lists selected corporate products. Do not infer commercial-card support from consumer-card support.
  • Prepaid and gift cards: Some work, but the answer is issuer-specific. American Express lists certain prepaid products, while other prepaid cards may not qualify.
  • Co-branded cards: A logo on the card may not identify the institution that actually issues and services it. Check the issuer in the card agreement or call the number on the back.
  • Territory-issued cards: U.S. service availability does not make every card issued in every U.S. territory eligible. Bank of America specifically identifies Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands as exclusions for its cards.

How to add a bank card to Apple Pay

Use the Wallet app on an iPhone

  1. Open Wallet.
  2. Tap the Add Card (+) button.
  3. Choose Debit or Credit Card.
  4. Tap Continue.
  5. Scan the physical card or enter its information manually.
  6. Follow the issuer’s verification prompts.
  7. Complete any one-time password, in-app approval, identity check, or customer-service verification.
  8. Wait until Wallet shows the card as active before trying to pay.

Apple’s requirements include a compatible device with supported software, a supported card from a participating issuer, an Apple Account, and a device passcode or biometric authentication. If you cannot add the card, Apple’s guidance is to contact the issuer using the number on the back of the card.

Why the bank app may be the better route

Adding a card from the issuer’s app can identify eligible cards automatically and may use a more reliable in-app verification process. Common paths include:

  • Bank of America: Sign in → Menu → Manage Debit/Credit Card → choose the card → Digital Wallets → Add on Apple Pay. See the Bank of America instructions.
  • Citi: Services → Card Control Hub → choose the card → Add to Apple Wallet. See Citi’s instructions.
  • Wells Fargo: Menu → Card Settings → Digital Wallet → Apple Pay → Add to Apple Wallet. See Wells Fargo’s instructions.
  • U.S. Bank: Sign in → menu → Manage cards → choose the card → Add to digital wallets → Apple Pay. See U.S. Bank’s wallet page.
  • TD Bank: Open the TD app → Card Manager → choose the eligible card → add it to a digital wallet. See TD Bank’s instructions.
  • Truist: Open online or mobile banking → Card controls → choose the card → Add card to Digital wallet → Apple Pay. See Truist’s instructions.
  • PNC: Add an eligible PNC Visa card through the PNC Mobile app or directly through Apple Wallet. See PNC’s Apple Pay page.
  • USAA: Open the USAA app, select the account or card, and choose Add to Apple Wallet. USAA American Express cards must be added from Wallet. See USAA’s FAQ.
  • Discover: Sign in to Discover → Manage Cards → Add Card → follow the Apple Pay prompts. See Discover’s instructions.
  • Capital One and Chase: Use the issuer’s Apple Pay enrollment instructions or add the card directly from Wallet. If the card does not appear as eligible, call the number on the card rather than trying to bypass the issuer’s decision.

What happens after the card is added?

Apple Pay uses a device-specific token

Apple Pay generally does not send the physical card number to the merchant. Instead, Apple describes a device-specific account number and transaction-specific security information. Banks may call this a token, virtual card number, or digital account number. Apple explains the process in its Apple Pay security and privacy documentation.

The precise privacy explanation is:

  • The physical card number is generally not shared with the merchant.
  • A device-specific token is stored in the device’s secure payment environment.
  • The issuer and payment networks still authorize and process the transaction.
  • Apple and the issuer may retain information needed to provision, authorize, support, or manage the card.

Apple Pay improves card-number privacy, but it does not make a purchase anonymous to the issuer, payment network, merchant, or other relevant service providers.

Purchases, rewards, and benefits

You can use an eligible card through Apple Pay in stores that accept it and in participating apps or websites that offer Apple Pay at checkout. Ordinary purchases generally remain subject to the card’s normal rewards, protections, interest, fees, and account terms. Chase, PNC, American Express, Discover, and Truist describe Apple Pay as preserving applicable card benefits or rewards, subject to the terms of the particular card and transaction.

Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS
  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.

There are qualifications:

  • Rewards can depend on the transaction category or merchant coding.
  • A promotional offer may exclude digital-wallet transactions.
  • Special features such as installments, rewards redemption, or account controls may not appear in Wallet even when ordinary purchases work.
  • Discover’s wallet and rewards-redemption behavior has changed during the Capital One transition, so Discover customers should check current issuer instructions.

Wallet is not your complete account history

Wallet’s transaction display varies by issuer and is not necessarily a complete statement:

  • Bank of America says Wallet shows its last 10 card purchases rather than complete purchase details.
  • Discover says its last 10 Apple Pay transactions may appear.
  • Citi says the digital card number may appear on statements and receipts.

For the authoritative balance, transaction record, dispute process, and rewards total, use the issuer’s app or statement.

Why Apple Pay may reject a card

If you see a message such as “Your issuer does not yet offer support for this card”, work through this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the institution. Look up the issuer in Apple’s participating-bank directory. If it is not listed, Apple Pay may not be available for that issuer in the relevant market.
  2. Check the exact card. Confirm that it is not ATM-only, prepaid, commercial, legacy, territory-issued, or a co-branded product with a different actual issuer.
  3. Activate and unlock the card. A new card may need activation. A card locked in the bank app, restricted for fraud review, delinquent, or otherwise blocked may fail provisioning.
  4. Check the device. Make sure the Apple device, operating system, Apple Account, passcode, and biometric settings meet Apple’s requirements.
  5. Use the issuer app. Bank-app enrollment can succeed when direct Wallet enrollment does not, particularly if verification must occur inside the bank’s app.
  6. Check for a replacement or migration. A newly replaced card, bank merger, account conversion, or Discover transition can require a new token or manual update.
  7. Call the issuer. Use the number on the back of the card and ask for the bank’s digital-wallet or Apple Pay team. Apple cannot override the issuer’s eligibility or approve the card on the issuer’s behalf.

If verification does not arrive

  1. Confirm that the phone number and email address on file with the bank are current.
  2. Try enrollment from the bank’s mobile app instead of Wallet.
  3. Check whether the issuer requires in-app approval rather than a text message.
  4. Confirm that the card is activated and not locked.
  5. Update iOS or iPadOS if an update is available, then try again.
  6. Call the number on the card and request digital-wallet verification or provisioning support.

If the card is added but a purchase is declined

Successful enrollment proves only that the card was provisioned. It does not prove that every purchase will be approved. Check:

  • Whether the merchant accepts Apple Pay.
  • Whether the terminal’s NFC contactless function is enabled.
  • Whether the merchant accepts your card’s network.
  • Whether the card’s spending controls permit the transaction.
  • Whether the account has sufficient funds or available credit.
  • Whether the merchant accepts contactless payments for that particular transaction type.

Apple notes that some terminals display a contactless symbol but are not currently configured to accept contactless payments. Try another terminal or the physical card, then contact the issuer if the physical card is also declined. See Apple’s guidance on where Apple Pay can be used.

Replacement cards and bank transitions

Replacement-card behavior differs by issuer. A new physical card may receive a new digital token, and the existing token may or may not update automatically.

  • American Express: Most replacement cards remain connected automatically, according to Amex. Replacement prepaid cards require an update.
  • Discover: During the Capital One transition, a new Discover card may need to be updated manually in Apple Pay. A replacement device may also require the card to be added again.
  • Other issuers: If Wallet still shows the old card, remove that card and add the replacement through Wallet or the issuer’s app. Do not remove a working card until you have the replacement available and know that the issuer has activated it.

Adding a card to Apple Pay does not normally cancel the physical card. Discover explicitly says the physical card can continue to be used after it is added to Apple Pay.

Lost or stolen iPhone: suspend Apple Pay quickly

Use Find My to place the iPhone in Lost Mode or erase it remotely. Apple says Lost Mode can suspend Apple Pay, and remote erasure removes the ability to pay with cards on that device.

Square Reader for magstripe (with Lightning connector)
  • Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
  • Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
  • Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
  • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).

These actions are different:

  • Suspending the token: Stops Apple Pay use on the missing device.
  • Removing the card from one device: Does not necessarily affect the same card on another Apple device.
  • Locking the underlying bank card: Blocks the physical card and potentially other payment methods, depending on the issuer’s controls.
  • Canceling and replacing the card: Usually appropriate when the physical card number may also be compromised, not merely because the phone is lost.

If you cannot use Find My, contact the issuer and ask it to suspend the card’s digital-wallet token. The bank can tell you whether the physical card itself should be locked or replaced.

Can Apple Pay be used at an ATM?

Sometimes, but Apple Pay support does not mean universal cardless-ATM support. ATM access depends on the bank, the debit-card type, the ATM network, and whether the particular ATM supports contactless access.

For example, Chase supports cardless ATM access with eligible debit cards loaded into Apple Pay, Google Wallet, or Samsung Wallet. Chase says credit cards and ATM-only cards are not eligible for that feature. Bank of America also describes contactless ATM use, but ATM capability should not be assumed for every bank or card. Ask the issuer whether its ATMs support Apple Pay and whether your specific debit card qualifies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Pay versus Apple Cash

These are separate services:

  • Apple Pay: Uses eligible credit, debit, or prepaid cards from participating issuers to make purchases.
  • Apple Cash: A separate U.S.-only service for sending, receiving, and holding money in an Apple Cash card.

Apple says Apple Cash services are provided by Green Dot Bank, Member FDIC, and that Apple is not a bank. Whether your bank supports Apple Pay does not determine whether you can use Apple Cash, and Apple Cash transfer destinations are not a test of Apple Pay card compatibility. See Apple’s Apple Cash information.

U.S. availability and international cards

This list is U.S.-focused. Apple Pay is available in the United States and Puerto Rico, but participating institutions and eligible card products differ by country and region. Apple maintains separate directories for Canada and Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Asia-Pacific. Use Apple’s regional participating-bank directory if your card was issued outside the United States.

Do not assume that:

  • TD Bank U.S. and TD Canada Trust have identical Apple Pay eligibility.
  • Citi’s U.S. cards and overseas Citi subsidiaries follow the same rules.
  • An American-issued card can be added to a foreign Apple Account without regional limitations.
  • A bank listed in one country’s directory supports every card it issues in every other country.

Territory rules also require care. For example, Bank of America specifically excludes cards issued in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands from its current Apple Pay eligibility guidance even though Apple Pay service is available in Puerto Rico.

Should Apple Pay support influence your choice of bank?

Apple Pay support is now a weak differentiator among major U.S. banks because most of them participate. If you are comparing accounts or cards, evaluate the underlying banking product first, then compare wallet implementation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Eligibility breadth: Does the issuer support your debit, consumer credit, business, corporate, prepaid, or co-branded card?
  2. Enrollment convenience: Can the card be added from the bank app, or must you enter its details manually in Wallet?
  3. Instant provisioning: Can a newly approved card be used before the physical card arrives? American Express documents an Instant Card Number feature for eligible applicants.
  4. Replacement handling: Does the wallet token update automatically, or must you remove and re-add the replacement card?
  5. Rewards compatibility: Are ordinary rewards preserved, and do special rewards-redemption or installment features work through the wallet?
  6. Debit-card ATM access: Can you use Apple Pay at the bank’s ATMs?
  7. Transaction visibility: Does the issuer provide more than Wallet’s limited recent-transaction display?
  8. Territory and product restrictions: Are commercial programs, legacy products, or cards issued in certain territories excluded?
  9. Support escalation: Does the issuer offer a digital-wallet team that can complete verification?
  10. Overall banking value: Compare fees, branch access, ATM networks, interest rates, rewards, fraud controls, and customer service. Apple Pay alone is rarely a sufficient reason to choose one bank over another.

American Express’s Instant Card Number information is one example of an issuer-specific feature that may matter more to a particular applicant than basic Apple Pay participation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Chase work with Apple Pay?

Yes. Many Chase Visa and Mastercard credit cards, debit cards, and Chase Liquid cards work with Apple Pay. Eligibility is card-specific, so check the card in Wallet or follow Chase’s Apple Pay guidance. Chase also supports cardless ATM access for eligible debit cards, but not for credit cards or ATM-only cards.

Does Bank of America work with Apple Pay?

Yes. Eligible Bank of America consumer debit and credit cards, certain Merrill Lynch and U.S. Trust consumer cards, and some small-business debit cards can be added. ATM-only cards are excluded, and Bank of America identifies cards issued in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands as currently ineligible. See the Bank of America Apple Pay FAQs.

Does Wells Fargo work with Apple Pay?

Yes. Most Wells Fargo Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards can be added, although Wells Fargo may require additional verification. Check the card through the Wells Fargo app or Wallet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Capital One work with Apple Pay?

Yes, for eligible Capital One credit and debit cards. The particular product, account status, and verification result determine whether a card can be provisioned. Use Capital One’s Apple Pay enrollment page or add the card through Wallet.

Does Discover still work with Apple Pay after the Capital One acquisition?

Yes. Discover cards can continue to be added and used with Apple Pay, according to Capital One. However, a replacement Discover card may need to be updated manually, and some wallet features may change during the transition. Check Capital One’s Discover FAQs for the current instructions.

Can I add a debit card to Apple Pay?

Usually, yes, if the specific debit card is eligible and issued by a participating institution. ATM-only, deposit-only, employee-only, and certain territory-issued debit cards may be excluded. Activate and unlock the card before attempting enrollment.

Can I add a business, corporate, or prepaid card?

Sometimes. Business, corporate, and prepaid eligibility varies substantially by issuer. PNC lists eligible small-business Visa cards, Bank of America lists certain small-business debit cards, and American Express lists selected corporate and prepaid products. Do not infer eligibility from the bank’s consumer-card support; check the exact card with its issuer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Apple Pay at an ATM?

Only at participating ATMs with an eligible debit card. Cardless ATM access is issuer- and ATM-specific. Chase, for example, supports eligible debit cards at its cardless ATMs but excludes credit cards and ATM-only cards. Ask your bank whether its ATMs support Apple Pay.

Will I still earn credit-card rewards when I use Apple Pay?

Ordinary card rewards and benefits generally continue to apply, subject to the card agreement and transaction coding. Promotional terms may exclude digital-wallet transactions, and special redemption or installment features may not be available in Wallet. Check the issuer’s terms for the specific offer.

Does Apple Pay charge a fee?

Issuer setup guidance does not identify a separate fee simply for adding an eligible card to Apple Pay. However, your card’s normal interest, foreign-transaction fees, cash-advance rules, and other account terms still apply. A merchant or issuer may impose fees related to the underlying transaction, so check the card agreement when a charge is unusual.

Why does my bank support Apple Pay but my card not work?

The bank may exclude that card type, or the card may be inactive, locked, restricted, under verification, or affected by a replacement or account migration. Confirm the exact card’s eligibility, try adding it from the bank’s app, update the device software, and call the number on the back of the card if verification fails. Apple cannot override the issuer’s decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I add the same card to multiple Apple devices?

Often, yes, if the issuer permits it. Each device receives its own device-specific payment token, so adding or removing the card on one device does not necessarily change the card on another. Issuers may impose product or device limits.

What happens when my physical card is replaced?

Some issuers update the Apple Pay token automatically, while others require the replacement card to be added again. American Express says most replacement cards remain connected automatically, while replacement prepaid cards require an update. Capital One says replacement Discover cards may need manual updating. If the wallet continues to show the old card, remove it and add the replacement.

Can I use Apple Pay outside the United States?

Possibly, but the answer depends on the card’s issuing country, Apple Pay availability, merchant acceptance, payment network, and issuer rules. Use Apple’s regional participating-bank directory rather than assuming that a U.S. card or bank has identical support abroad.

The Bottom Line

Most major U.S. banks support Apple Pay, but the card—not just the bank name—is the deciding factor. Check Apple’s participating-bank directory, verify the exact card with the issuer, add it through Wallet or the bank’s app, and contact the issuer’s digital-wallet team when verification or eligibility fails. Merchant acceptance, cardless ATM access, rewards features, replacement handling, and international use are separate questions.
