MAINGEAR’s BYO RAM option lets you provide compatible memory for a configured PC; MAINGEAR says it installs, tunes and tests the RAM before shipping. The company also says supplying your own memory reduces the system price without an additional BYO fee. The offer is not a way to receive a finished PC with no RAM installed: MAINGEAR says it needs memory in the system to validate stability and support the build.
What MAINGEAR’s BYO RAM option includes
MAINGEAR advertises BYO RAM for custom desktops, workstations and laptops, but the compatible memory depends on the particular platform. The company says customers can send a kit they already own using a prepaid envelope with two-day shipping, or have a separately purchased kit shipped directly to MAINGEAR. It tests the memory, tunes settings for performance and stability, and returns any unused kit with the PC. For shipping, MAINGEAR advises keeping modules protected in the included clamshell tray and anti-static packaging. See the MAINGEAR BYO RAM Program and its homepage for current offer details.

Because memory is installed for validation, this is different from buying a system and planning to add RAM later. MAINGEAR says the installed memory is needed for stability validation, tuning, support and warranty coverage.
Check compatibility before sending or buying a kit
“DDR5” alone does not establish compatibility. The memory generation, module type, capacity, stick count and speed must suit the exact CPU and motherboard in the configuration. MAINGEAR’s guide says current systems do not use DDR3 or DDR4; a desktop kit should not be assumed to fit a laptop or workstation.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 Compatible Only: Dual memory profiles allow you to easily select optimized settings for your platform, whether you’re running an AMD or Intel processor

- Onboard Voltage Regulation: Onboard voltage regulation for reliable power at high frequencies
- Maximum Bandwidth and Tight Response Times: Optimized for peak performance on the latest AMD and Intel DDR5 motherboards
Match the module type to the platform
- Gaming desktops with AMD Ryzen or Intel Core Ultra: MAINGEAR specifies DDR5 Unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMM).
- Laptops: Laptop SODIMMs are a different physical and electrical type from desktop UDIMMs; do not treat them as interchangeable.
- Threadripper or Xeon workstations: MAINGEAR says these platforms may use Registered DIMMs (RDIMM). RDIMM and UDIMM are not interchangeable.
Match capacity and stick configuration
MAINGEAR describes two matching sticks as the common dual-channel arrangement and lists these common capacities:
| Capacity | Common configuration stated by MAINGEAR |
|---|---|
| 32GB | 2 × 16GB |
| 64GB | 2 × 32GB |
| 128GB | 2 × 64GB |
MAINGEAR says it cannot use mixed-capacity sticks. A single stick may work, but can reduce performance compared with a matched pair. Other capacities may be supported, though MAINGEAR cautions they can be more finicky.
Confirm speed and stability for the specific build
Memory stability depends on the motherboard, CPU and memory controller as well as the RAM’s capacity and speed. High-speed kits may need tuning, and four-stick configurations can be harder to optimize. Ask MAINGEAR to confirm the exact kit before ordering or shipping it; provide the kit’s make and model along with the intended PC configuration. The compatibility guide is available on the program page.
Compare the real cost, not just the advertised RAM price
MAINGEAR says the BYO option lowers the configured PC’s purchase price and adds no BYO service fee. The official program page does not state a universal dollar saving, so compare the actual configured system price with the price of the RAM you would supply, including any shipping or purchase costs. There is no established basis for saying an existing kit, a separately purchased kit or MAINGEAR-supplied memory is always the cheapest choice; compatibility, configuration and convenience affect the comparison.

The offer is framed against rising memory costs. MAINGEAR’s program page says, “Many DDR5 kits are seeing 100% to 400+% price increases.” That is the company’s characterization, not an independently verified statistic for every retailer or kit. Separately, TechSpot reported in December 2025 that CEO Wallace Santos said MAINGEAR’s cost had risen 394% for a 32GB kit and 344% for a 64GB kit. Those were company cost figures reported at launch, not current consumer retail-price changes. TechSpot’s launch coverage provides that attribution.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Warranty and support responsibilities
MAINGEAR says supplied RAM keeps any applicable manufacturer warranty, while the system warranty and lifetime support are unaffected. That distinction matters if a memory module fails: retain any documentation needed to pursue the module maker’s warranty, while MAINGEAR’s stated system coverage remains in place.
What is known about the offer’s duration
The reviewed program information does not establish a fixed end date. In a December 2025 interview, Santos described the memory situation as a multi-year problem, but that was his launch-era assessment rather than a verified current forecast. Tom’s Hardware reported the interview. Since eligibility and pricing can change, check the live configurator before placing a time-sensitive order.
