Magic Johnson’s net worth is estimated at $1.6 billion by Forbes as of September 12, 2026. That is a third-party estimate, not a public audited statement of his assets and debts. Forbes attributes most of the fortune to Johnson’s reported 60% stake in insurer EquiTrust, alongside sports ownership and business investments.

What is Magic Johnson’s net worth?

Forbes lists Johnson’s real-time net worth at $1.6 billion as of September 12, 2026. Forbes says its real-time estimate reflects changes since the prior trading day’s market close. The figure can change as public and private holdings are valued, and it should not be treated as a precise, independently verified balance sheet.

One important distinction: EquiTrust’s assets under management are company assets, not Johnson’s personal net worth. Forbes reports that the insurer’s AUM grew from $16 billion to $33 billion since Johnson took over in 2015; that growth helps describe the business, but the AUM figure is not money he personally owns.

How did Magic Johnson build his fortune?

EquiTrust is the largest reported driver

Forbes identifies a reported 60% ownership stake in EquiTrust as the majority source of Johnson’s wealth. The insurer’s June 2015 announcement from Magic Johnson Enterprises said the company acquired a controlling interest in EquiTrust, but that historical announcement does not establish today’s ownership percentage or the value of Johnson’s stake. Forbes’s later profile is the source for the reported 60% figure.

His business career extended beyond basketball

Forbes estimates Johnson earned around $40 million in total as a Lakers player. It describes his later wealth-building through joint-venture partnerships, including movie theaters, Starbucks franchises, real estate, and healthcare. Those ventures illustrate a shift from playing income to ownership and business interests; Forbes does not present the $40 million as a measure of his current assets.

Sports stakes and other investments add breadth

Forbes also identifies smaller interests in the Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, and LAFC. Magic Johnson Enterprises (MJE), where Johnson is chairman and CEO, lists a broader public-facing portfolio spanning sports, infrastructure, and venture investments. Its named holdings include the Dodgers, Sparks, LAFC, Washington Spirit, Washington Commanders, Team Liquid, and direct investments such as Skydio, Johnson Energy Storage, Alchemy, and ShotTracker.

Rank #2

These portfolio lists show the range of businesses associated with MJE, not the dollar value of Johnson’s personal interest in each one. MJE describes its approach as using strategic partnerships and ownership, direct investments, and marketing, with a focus on products and services for ethnically diverse and underserved urban communities. LAFC’s official ownership page separately lists Johnson as an owner.

How to interpret the $1.6 billion estimate

  • It is an estimate, not a filed personal balance sheet. Forbes’s figure is a third-party valuation of net worth rather than a public accounting of every asset and liability.
  • Private-company stakes are difficult to price. Unlike publicly traded shares, private holdings do not have a daily market price; their estimated values depend on valuation methods and available information.
  • Company scale is not personal wealth. EquiTrust’s reported $33 billion in AUM belongs to the insurer’s business, not to Johnson as an individual.
  • The date matters. Forbes’s number is dated September 12, 2026, so it should not be presented as a guaranteed value on another date.
