Manufacturing in America is done by a broad network of more than 244,000 U.S. manufacturers, most of them small businesses. The sector employs millions of people and contributes substantially to the economy, but U.S. production does not mean every part of a product is American-made. The answer depends on whether you mean U.S. manufacturing as an industry, domestic content in the supply chain, or the stricter consumer-facing claim “Made in USA.”
How many manufacturers are in the United States?
In a March 2025 overview, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), citing the National Association of Manufacturers, reported that more than 13 million people worked for more than 244,000 U.S. manufacturers in January 2025. NIST also reported that more than 93% of manufacturing companies had fewer than 100 employees. These are dated estimates, not a live census.
That distribution is important: American manufacturing is not limited to a few familiar corporations. It includes a large base of smaller firms as well as larger employers. The figures describe the industry as a whole; they do not identify which companies make a particular product or where each product is made. NIST’s manufacturing industry overview provides the employment and company-size figures.
What does manufacturing contribute to the U.S. economy?
NIST reported that manufacturing contributed $2.93 trillion to U.S. economic output in the third quarter of 2024, equal to 10% of GDP in that period. It also reported $1.6 trillion in U.S. manufactured-goods exports in 2023. These figures show the sector’s scale, but they refer to different measures and periods: quarterly economic contribution and annual exports, respectively.

- DIAGONAL CUTTING PLIERS: Wire snips knife design snips wire up to 16 AWG
The Department of Commerce reported that U.S. manufacturers produced $6.9 trillion in gross output in 2022. Gross output is not the same measure as contribution to GDP, so these figures should not be treated as interchangeable. NIST’s overview reports the GDP and export figures; the Commerce Department’s analysis reports gross output and domestic content.
How much of U.S. manufacturing is actually domestic?
The Department of Commerce estimated that domestic content accounted for 80% of U.S. manufacturers’ gross output in 2022. The same analysis found that nearly one-third of manufacturers’ intermediate inputs were imported. Together, those figures illustrate how domestic production and international supply chains coexist.

- Best for Precision Applications – Ideal for a broad range of other mechanical applications
- Sharp Point for Precise Work – Each tip comes to a sharp 30-degree tapered point to keep the strength as close to the tip as possible
- Resists Twisting Out – Two "wings" on the base of the shank help it resist being twisted or pulled out of the handle
- Versatile Handle – The classic square handle is long and slender with contoured sides for overall versatility and maneuverability
The 80% figure is an aggregate value measure across U.S. manufacturing. It does not mean that a particular product is 80% American, that 80% of its parts were made in the United States, or that the remaining share is identical for every company or industry. A company may manufacture a product in the United States while relying on imported materials or components. The Department of Commerce’s 2024 analysis explains the aggregate estimate.
What does “Made in USA” mean?
For an unqualified “Made in USA” claim, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says a product must be “all or virtually all” made in the United States. This is a product-level standard, distinct from the Commerce Department’s economy-wide estimate of domestic content. A company’s U.S. headquarters, U.S. assembly, or contribution to domestic output does not by itself establish that a specific product meets the FTC standard.

In July 2025, the FTC described sending warning letters to four companies and letters to Amazon and Walmart concerning third-party sellers’ Made in USA claims. Those enforcement actions underscore that origin claims warrant scrutiny; they do not verify the origin of any particular product. The FTC’s July 2025 notice describes the actions and the standard.
How to assess a claim about an American-made product
When evaluating a particular item, separate the company’s identity from the product’s origin. Useful questions include:

- Multi-Bit screwdriver features a durable ratcheting mechanism for faster and easier all-day driving
- On-board storage of 14 different double-sided screwdriver bits and a 1/4-Inch nut driver
- Industrial-strength bits that are conveniently housed in the handle
- Collar sets ratchet direction at forward, fixed and reverse
- Cushion-Grip handle for great torque and maximum comfort
- Where does the product’s final manufacturing or substantial transformation take place?
- Which components and materials are domestic, and which are imported?
- Is the claim about U.S. assembly, domestic content, or an unqualified “Made in USA” label?
- What evidence supports the claim for this specific product and its current production site?
Federal procurement policy is a separate matter. MadeinAmerica.gov covers federal implementation of Made in America laws, funding opportunities for domestic industry, and transparency about waivers. It is not a directory for verifying consumer products’ country-of-origin claims.

The available industry figures describe the scale and structure of U.S. manufacturing, not a verified, current company-by-company roster. A reliable answer about who makes a specific product requires checking the product, production facility, and substantiation for its origin claim. Company headquarters, domestic economic contribution, and where a product is made answer different questions.
