The purchase price and Macquarie’s exact ownership percentage were not disclosed. The plan was to acquire and upgrade strategically located network-interconnection buildings, then lease data-center space to businesses that needed access to networks in those markets.
What Macquarie acquired—and what “fund” means here
Macquarie Infrastructure Partners IV closed its acquisition of Netrality Data Centers from Abrams Capital Management on August 30, 2019, according to CRN’s account republished by Netrality. A separate Data Center Knowledge report republished by Netrality described Macquarie as taking a majority stake, with about half a dozen Netrality senior managers participating, including CEO Gerry Marshall and COO Josh Maes.
Neither contemporary account disclosed the purchase price or Macquarie’s precise share. Marshall said the partnership would provide access to growth capital, but the reporting does not identify a separate financing facility, a dollar commitment, or a schedule of future investment. “Fund” in the headline refers to the capital and backing associated with the ownership deal, not a disclosed loan amount.
What the expansion plan involved
Netrality’s strategy was to own important network-interconnection buildings, improve their facilities, and lease space to organizations seeking connections to carriers and networks in a particular city. Marshall described Macquarie’s sector and institutional relationships as a way to support acquisitions of properties and businesses complementary to Netrality’s portfolio.

The model is different from simply building large amounts of general-purpose computing capacity. A carrier hotel is a multi-tenant, often downtown data center that acts as a connectivity hub. Its meet-me rooms allow customers and network providers to connect and exchange traffic. Data Center Frontier’s account of the transaction and carrier-hotel model quotes Macquarie Infrastructure Partners CEO Karl Kuchel calling the facilities “a critical form of digital infrastructure.”
One contemporary report used Netrality’s 1102 Grand property in Kansas City to illustrate how the model can work: a content company might connect to local internet service providers and house network equipment there. The article also mentioned compute and storage as possibilities; it did not establish that Netflix was a Netrality customer or that a particular contract existed.

Which properties were in the 2019 portfolio?
Contemporary reporting described six data centers across five markets: Chicago, Kansas City, Houston, Philadelphia, and St. Louis. Data Center Frontier listed two St. Louis addresses and one property in each of the other four cities. This is the portfolio snapshot associated with the 2019 transaction, not Netrality’s later footprint.

Netrality’s About page, consulted September 30, 2026, gives a later company-reported snapshot of 18 properties, 3.3 million square feet, and more than 100 megawatts of capacity across North America. Netrality also describes itself there as the largest privately held owner-operator of core interconnection facilities in the United States. These are company claims, not independent measurements, and they should not be read as the size or verified capacity of the 2019 portfolio.

The two snapshots show the difference between the acquisition’s starting footprint and the company’s later stated scale. They do not, by themselves, establish how much of the later growth came from the Macquarie transaction or quantify the deal’s financial performance.
