Ma.gnolia’s original bookmark database could not be recovered after a January 2009 failure. Some users salvaged bookmarks from external sources, but there was no general restore for members’ data.
What happened to Ma.gnolia?
On January 30, 2009, social-bookmarking service Ma.gnolia went offline after a database failure. The service lost both its primary user-data store and its backup, leaving members unable to access bookmarks through the website or API while the company tried to reconstruct the databases. WIRED reported the outage that day.
On February 17, founder Larry Halff said the attempt to recover the database files had failed. Data Center Knowledge reported the outcome on February 19 and described the MySQL database as nearly half a terabyte; that figure refers to the database’s reported size, not the number of users or bookmarks. Halff said, “Unfortunately, database file recovery has been unsuccessful and I won’t be able to recover members’ bookmarks from the Ma.gnolia database.” Data Center Knowledge’s account quoted his update.
Could users recover their bookmarks?
Some users could rebuild at least part of their collections from copies outside Ma.gnolia. Those routes depended on what each person had connected, shared, or left publicly accessible before the outage; they did not restore the failed database for all members.

Ma.gnolia’s founder summarized the initial incident as “Ma.gnolia experienced every web service’s worst nightmare: data corruption and loss,” in an outage notice quoted by WIRED. The available accounts establish that recovery from Ma.gnolia’s database failed and that external sources helped some users; they do not establish that every copy was erased from every outside source. They also do not establish a detailed technical root cause or whether a recovery endpoint or member archive is accessible today.

The practical lesson is about independence and restore testing: a backup that fails alongside the primary store does not protect a collection. Keep copies in a separate location and periodically confirm that you can open or restore them. That is a general takeaway from the incident, not a recovery method Ma.gnolia offered.
