AOL Gets Small With Outdoor Micro Data Centers

AOL’s Dulles prototype packaged servers, networking, cooling and remote operations in a rack-sized outdoor enclosure. Here is what it did, what Sandy showed, and where the experiment fits in today’s micro data-center category.

In July 2012, AOL unveiled a rack-sized outdoor micro data center prototype at its Dulles, Virginia, campus. The enclosure combined servers, networking, power and water connections, and two cooling modes in a remotely managed package. AOL presented it as a way to place computing capacity in smaller, more flexible locations—not as proof that the company completed a global edge network.

What AOL deployed in 2012

The first unit entered production outside an AOL data center in Dulles in July 2012. A November follow-up identified it as a modified R.A.S.E.R. DX enclosure from Elliptical Mobile Solutions (EMS). It sat on a concrete slab and was designed for an unmanned or lightly attended site.

Inside the rack-sized enclosure were servers and networking equipment. The installation required electrical power, network connectivity and a water connection. AOL discussed placing similar units in fenced areas monitored by security cameras while operating them remotely from its network operations center.

How the outdoor micro data center cooled its equipment

Outside-air economization

The default cooling method was air-side economization: outside air was brought into the enclosure to remove heat from the servers when outdoor conditions were suitable. This could reduce reliance on compressor-based air conditioning in cooler weather.

Direct-expansion backup

When outdoor temperatures became too high for outside-air cooling, a direct-expansion (DX) air-conditioning system took over. The two-mode design allowed the unit to operate across changing weather rather than depending on outdoor air alone.

Protection for rack hardware

EMS supplied adaptive suspension for the modified R.A.S.E.R. DX, according to the November 2012 report. The suspension was intended to protect rack equipment from vibration, motion and shock. The available reports do not provide an independently measured efficiency result or a formal weather-resilience rating for the prototype.

Why AOL wanted smaller, distributed capacity

AOL’s strategy was to make infrastructure easier to place near concentrations of users and content demand. Michael Manos, then identified as CTO of AOL Services, said the design could provide “a greater number of places around the planet where we can deploy capacity” and give AOL a choice beyond traditional data centers and colocation markets.

It is an ideal solution for outdoor telecom, security, industrial, and networking installations where reliable protection is required.
  • 【HEAVY DUTY & EQUIPMENT SECURITY】Built with SPCC cold-rolled steel and finished with a durable cream-white powder coating, this outdoor server cabinet offers excellent strength and corrosion resistance. The integrated 120VAC fan tray and airflow ventilation system help maintain proper temperature and protect equipment from overheating.
  • 【FULLY ASSEMBLED】Delivered fully assembled for quick installation, this wall mount network cabinet includes rack screws and cage nuts. Easily mount your rack equipment without additional accessories or time-consuming assembly.
  • 【ADJUSTABLE RAILS & CABLE MANAGEMENT】Featuring fully adjustable mounting rails and standard square mounting holes, this 4U server rack cabinet accommodates various rack-mount devices and depths. Top and bottom cable entry knockouts support organized cable routing with optional cable management accessories.

The company discussed using distributed sites for rapidly deployed capacity and potentially for AOL properties such as The Huffington Post and Patch. The idea could also have reduced dependence on commercial content-delivery networks. Those statements described a strategic possibility and future direction; they do not establish that AOL built the proposed worldwide network.

Capacity claims that need careful reading

Figure What it referred to How to interpret it
Thousands of virtual machines A capacity description attributed to Michael Manos in a 2012 industry report A reported housing capability for a high-density enclosure, not an audited count of live workloads
500 kilowatts to 1 megawatt Earlier AOL remotely managed IT deployment chunks Applies to AOL’s first unmanned-data-center approach, not the rack-sized outdoor prototype

No independently published performance study in the available material establishes the prototype’s power usage effectiveness, measured uptime or sustained workload capacity.

Did AOL’s unit survive Hurricane Sandy?

AOL Senior Tech Director Scott Killian said the R.A.S.E.R. DX “performed wonderfully through Hurricane Sandy.” He reported no hardware issues, no alerts from AOL’s network operations center and no leakage at the Dulles unit.

Outdoor Electrical Box, Cold-Rolled Steel Plate, Aluminum Alloy Back Beam, One-Piece Ventilation Design, IP65 Waterproof, Wall/Pole Mounted (15.7" x 11.8" x 7.9")
  • 【High-quality cold-rolled steel plate】 The electrical box is made of 1.5mm high-quality cold-rolled steel plate in one piece. The surface of the double layer of the powder spraying and crystal plating is solid and durable, not easy to deform.
  • 【Activated disassembled back panel】The back panel inside the cabinet adopts the movable dispersed installation method, which is convenient for installing equipment. In addition, the guide slot and the door are sealed to effectively prevent rain and dust from entering the cabinet.
  • 【Integrated exhaust design】 The external cold air enters from the bottom two sides, the heat emitted by the internal equipment is removed by the fan, and the heat is discharged from the box.
  • 【304 stainless steel accessories] The electrical box contains screws, hoops, and insect screens made of 304 stainless steel, outdoor rust-free, chassis is equipped with various installation spare parts and can be wall-mounted or pole-mounted.
  • 【Heat dissipation and waterproof design】The distribution box design have four ventilation slots, IP65 waterproof level, and can be installed in an 8cm × 8cm or 9cm × 9cm cooling fan hole. (Note: This product does not include cooling fans).

That is a company-reported account of one installation. The same November 2012 coverage notes that Dulles experienced less severe conditions than locations farther north in New Jersey and New York. The report therefore supports a limited conclusion: AOL said its Dulles enclosure continued operating without those reported problems during that event. It is not a general certification of storm resistance or a numerical reliability rating.

How AOL’s prototype fits the outdoor micro data-center category

Outdoor micro data centers are sealed or weather-protected enclosures that place hardened computing equipment outside a conventional building. Designs vary substantially, so the relevant comparison points are deployment setting, environmental sealing, cooling, physical form, available power and connectivity, and remote monitoring.

Design point AOL’s 2012 prototype Broader category today
Form factor Rack-sized outdoor enclosure on a concrete slab May be rack, wall, pole or container mounted
Cooling Outside-air economization with DX backup Can include air cooling, DX systems or immersion cooling
Operations Remote management, with fencing and cameras discussed Remote monitoring and access control are common design considerations
Equipment Servers and networking gear Often hardened, extended-temperature edge servers

A current example described by ADLINK combines its MECS-7210 edge server with Charles Industries’ SC102 Micro Edge Enclosure. That system is described as a sealed, cooled outdoor integration suitable for pole or wall mounting. It is a separate contemporary product example, not a successor to AOL’s 2012 hardware.

What the experiment shows—and what it does not

  • It shows: a major online company was testing compact, remotely managed infrastructure that could be installed outside traditional data-center buildings.
  • It shows: cooling, physical protection, connectivity and security could be packaged into a deployable enclosure.
  • It does not show: that AOL completed a global edge-computing network based on the prototype.
  • It does not show: a verified efficiency benchmark, audited virtual-machine count or universal hurricane-resilience standard.

For readers searching for an “outdoor server rack enclosure,” AOL’s R.A.S.E.R. DX is best understood as a historical infrastructure experiment. Modern outdoor edge products occupy the same broad category but differ in hardware, mounting options, cooling systems and availability.
