M1 Finance and Vanguard suit different investing workflows. M1 centers on customizable portfolio Pies and scheduled automation, but some customers may pay a $3 monthly platform or IRA fee. Vanguard has a $0 account-opening minimum and a $25 annual account service fee that can be avoided with electronic delivery. Neither is automatically cheaper for every investor: compare the fees, investment minimums, account type, and trading workflow that apply to you.

How do M1 Finance and Vanguard differ?

M1 is built around target allocations you set in customizable Pies, with tools for recurring investing and rebalancing. Its orders execute in designated trading windows rather than instantly. Vanguard’s brokerage account offers a broad investment menu that includes its own and other providers’ mutual funds and ETFs, as well as stocks and bonds.

These are differences in emphasis, not proof that one provider lacks features the other offers. The cited Vanguard comparison does not establish a feature-by-feature account of automation, fractional shares, order types, or transfers.

Which platform has lower fees?

There is no universal winner. M1’s potential monthly charge and Vanguard’s annual service fee have different triggers and waiver rules. The figures below are provider-published account fees; they do not capture every possible investment expense or account charge.

Fee M1 Finance Vanguard
Account/platform fee $3 monthly Platform Fee or $3 monthly IRA Fee may apply; M1 says both are not charged in the same month. Automatically waived for a billing cycle if qualifying total M1 assets are at least $10,000 for at least one day in that cycle, or the customer has an active M1 Personal Loan. M1 disclosure updated May 2026. M1 fee disclosure $25 annually for brokerage and IRA accounts; avoidable by signing up for electronic delivery of account-related documents. Vanguard brokerage account page
Trading commissions M1 says self-directed brokerage accounts have no commission, trading, or management fees; other charges may apply. M1 fee disclosure No online commission for buying or selling Vanguard mutual funds or ETFs in a Vanguard Brokerage Account. This statement does not establish the cost of every investment or transaction. Vanguard brokerage account page

To compare your likely costs, first identify whether you will use a brokerage account or IRA, then check whether you qualify for the applicable fee waiver. Separately account for the investments you choose: an account-fee waiver does not mean every investment is cost-free.

How much do you need to open an account?

The minimum to open an account is different from the amount needed to buy a specific investment.

Investment purchase minimum Not stated in the cited account guide for each investment. Vanguard ETFs are listed from $1 per share; mutual fund minimums vary by fund. Vanguard brokerage account page

So Vanguard’s $0 opening minimum does not mean every mutual fund can be purchased with no minimum. Likewise, M1’s account-opening minimum is not a statement of the price or minimum for every security.

What accounts can you open?

M1 Finance

M1’s July 1, 2026 account guide lists individual, joint, trust, custodial, Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP IRA, cash, and crypto account types. It says U.S. residents aged 18 or older with a valid Social Security number can open an individual brokerage account. Eligibility and availability may differ by account type. See M1’s account types guide.

Vanguard

Vanguard’s brokerage comparison describes taxable brokerage, brokerage IRA, and 529 accounts. A taxable brokerage account has no contribution limit; for 2026, the page lists IRA contribution limits of $7,500, or $8,600 for people aged 50 or older. IRA tax treatment and withdrawal rules differ from those for taxable accounts. See Vanguard’s brokerage account comparison.

Account availability, eligibility, and tax rules depend on the account and individual circumstances. Confirm current requirements before opening an account; this comparison is not individualized tax advice.

How does investing work on each platform?

M1: portfolio Pies and scheduled trading

M1 lets customers build Pies from stocks and ETFs, assign each holding a target portfolio percentage, and use Auto-Invest and recurring transfers. Its June 2, 2026 guide says the platform can rebalance toward underweight slices and supports fractional shares. M1 describes the system this way: “M1 uses a proprietary trading system to automate your trading activity.” M1 brokerage account.

That automation comes with timing limits. M1 places orders in designated morning or afternoon windows on business days. Orders submitted outside a window or on weekends execute in a later window; M1 says it does not offer day trading or instant execution. If you need immediate execution or more control over timing, investigate this constraint before choosing. M1’s getting-started guide.

Vanguard: a broader listed investment menu

Which platform fits your priorities?

If your priority is… What the cited information suggests
Automated target allocations and recurring investing M1’s Pies, Auto-Invest, recurring transfers, and rebalancing features are directly described in its guide.
Immediate execution or day trading M1 says it does not offer instant execution or day trading; compare the order controls you need before selecting a platform.
A $0 account-opening minimum Vanguard lists $0 to open brokerage and IRA accounts, though investment minimums still depend on the product.
Choosing among investment types and providers Vanguard’s comparison lists mutual funds, ETFs, stocks, and bonds from Vanguard and other providers.
A particular account type Check the provider’s current eligibility, account availability, and applicable contribution or tax rules for that account.

What to verify before opening an account

  • Look up the current account fee and whether you meet its waiver conditions.
  • Separate the account-opening minimum from the minimum to buy a particular fund or security.
  • Confirm the exact account type you need, including eligibility and tax rules.
  • Check whether scheduled trading windows fit your approach, especially if trade timing matters.
  • Review current terms directly with the provider; fees and account features can change.

Investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal. The right comparison depends on the account you plan to use, your fee exposure, preferred investments, and desired trading workflow.
