French fintech Lydia announced a $100 million Series C in December 2021, reaching unicorn status with a reported valuation above $1 billion. The round backed its ambition to grow from a person-to-person payments app into a broader financial-services platform. It was a 2021 funding event—not a new raise or evidence of Lydia’s current valuation.
What happened in Lydia’s funding round?
TechCrunch reported on December 7, 2021, that Lydia had raised $100 million in Series C funding and was valued at more than $1 billion. The article described the company as a unicorn and said the round was primarily financed by existing investors. Lydia co-founder and CEO Cyril Chiche told TechCrunch: “What’s really impressive with this round is that it is primarily financed by existing investors.” TechCrunch’s 2021 report also put Lydia’s user base at 5.5 million at the time; that is a historical figure, not a current user count.
Lydia Solutions’ official company history later recorded the 2021 fundraising amount as $103 million and said the company attained unicorn status that year. The available accounts do not explain why the company-history figure differs from TechCrunch’s $100 million announcement figure, so they should be treated as separately attributed numbers rather than reconciled into a single total. Who invested in Lydia?
TechCrunch named Dragoneer and Echo Street as investors joining Lydia for the first time. Existing investors Tencent, Accel and Founders Future also participated, according to the report. That mix of new and returning investors supported the round, while Chiche’s comment emphasized the role of existing backers.

Why was Lydia called a financial “super app”?
The label described Lydia’s direction in 2021, not a permanent or current list of features. The app began with mobile payments between users and had expanded into a wider set of financial services by the time of the funding announcement.
From peer-to-peer payments to more services
TechCrunch’s 2021 account described virtual and physical Visa debit cards, shared sub-accounts, small loans of €100 to €3,000, savings accounts and trading. It also reported that Lydia offered fractional investments through a partnership with Bitpanda. Those are descriptions of the product at that time; they should not be read as confirmation that the same features, terms or availability apply today.

Accel, an investor in Lydia, has also described the company’s early peer-to-peer payments and money pots as part of its development. That account reflects an investor’s perspective on the company’s evolution. Accel’s Lydia profile
What happened to the Lydia banking app?
Lydia Solutions changed its product structure in 2024. The company says it introduced a new Lydia app dedicated to payments and separated banking services under the Sumeria brand. Its official history describes Sumeria as online banking for individuals, with account, card and savings-support features. It also says the built-in virtual banking assistant Sia launched in 2026. Marqeta, which announced on June 4, 2024, that it was powering Sumeria’s digital banking app, said its partnership with Lydia began in 2019. The release reported that the partnership had helped Lydia serve 8 million users across France, Belgium, Spain and Portugal. That is a partner-reported figure tied to the 2024 announcement and those four countries, not a current audited count. The release also described Sumeria’s remunerated current account and planned European expansion. Marqeta’s 2024 announcement
Is Lydia the same as Sumeria?
They are distinct brands within Lydia Solutions’ post-2024 product structure: Lydia is the payments app, while Sumeria carries the company’s banking services. The old “financial super app” description should therefore be understood in its 2021 context, rather than used to assume that payments and banking remain bundled in one app or offered on the same terms.

Which countries can use Lydia?
Eligibility depends on the service. Lydia’s support page currently lists compatible phone-number prefixes for France and its territories, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, Italy and Luxembourg. It also says users can register a credit card issued by a European bank for Lydia services such as paying friends and using money pots. A listed country or eligible card does not establish access to every Lydia or Sumeria feature. Check Lydia’s current country and phone-number guidance for practical eligibility questions.
