Lufthansa’s Boeing 747-8, registration D-ABYN and named Niedersachsen, received the airline’s blue 100th-anniversary livery in March 2026. Lufthansa said the aircraft was expected to return to Frankfurt on March 5 and enter scheduled service to Los Angeles the following day; those were plans announced at the time, not a current route listing.
What changed on the 747-8?
The centenary design replaces the aircraft’s usual appearance with a blue fuselage and an oversized white crane. Its wings merge visually with the airplane’s wings. Lufthansa’s design also places a “100” on the left side, “1926 / 2026” on the right, and another “100” underneath the aircraft. The airline presented D-ABYN as the sixth aircraft in the special livery when it announced the 747’s makeover on March 4, 2026. Lufthansa’s announcement describes the aircraft and the paint scheme.
When was it expected to fly in the new livery?
In its March 4 announcement, Lufthansa said D-ABYN was expected back in Frankfurt on March 5, 2026, then scheduled to fly to Los Angeles on March 6. These dates record the airline’s announced plan; they do not establish where the aircraft flies now. A current route or flight schedule would require a current schedule source.
How does the 747 fit into Lufthansa’s anniversary fleet?
Lufthansa’s November 2025 announcement outlined an initial anniversary fleet of six aircraft types and forecast that the blue-livery fleet would be completed in fall 2026. By the March 2026 747 announcement, the airline said six aircraft wore the scheme. A Lufthansa archive entry dated July 14, 2026, later identified an A350-1000 as the seventh blue-livery aircraft and said it was scheduled to transfer to Munich in fall. That transfer was a plan in the July entry; its completion is not established here.

The anniversary marks 100 years since the founding of the first Lufthansa, called “Luft Hansa.” The airline says it was founded on January 6, 1926, and made its maiden flight on April 6, 1926. The 747-8 has a shorter but substantial history with Lufthansa: scheduled service began on June 1, 2012, according to the airline’s 2013 report.
Why the “Queen of the Skies” label matters
The Boeing 747 became a defining wide-body aircraft over a 54-year production run. Boeing says the final 747 rolled out in December 2022 and records 1,574 aircraft produced across the program. The first 747-8 Intercontinental was delivered to Lufthansa and departed for Frankfurt on May 1, 2012, according to Boeing’s 747 history. Lufthansa’s scheduled passenger service began a month later.

The Lufthansa announcements establish the aircraft’s identity, the design, and dated fleet plans. They do not provide a published statistic on public reception or commercial impact. Nor do they verify the aircraft’s current routes or whether the A350-1000’s planned Munich transfer has since taken place.
