Lucidity announced a $21 million Series A on February 12, 2025, led by WestBridge Capital and joined by existing investor Alpha Wave Global. The Indian cloud-infrastructure startup says it will use about half the funding to expand go-to-market operations and the rest to develop its products. TechCrunch reported that the round brought Lucidity’s total funding to approximately $32 million.

The company’s focus is narrower—and more technically difficult—than the phrase “cloud storage” suggests. Lucidity primarily automates the sizing of live cloud block-storage volumes, including AWS EBS, Azure Managed Disks, and Google Cloud Persistent Disks. Its pitch is that enterprises can reduce unused capacity without manually resizing production systems or interrupting applications.

What Lucidity raised

Lucidity was founded in 2021 by Vatsal Rastogi and Nitin Bhadauria. At the time of the funding announcement, TechCrunch reported that the company had about 100 employees across India, Abu Dhabi, London, and the United States.

The startup said it was targeting Fortune 2000 companies with more than $1 billion in revenue, particularly in the United States and Europe. About 70% of its customers were reportedly in the United States, with the remainder in Europe, and roughly 20% were Fortune 100 companies.

TechCrunch cited approximately $32 million in total funding after the Series A, including a $5.3 million seed round led by Alpha Wave in 2022. Other secondary reporting has cited a slightly different total. Startup funding figures can vary depending on how extensions, separate investments, or other financing are counted, so the $32 million figure is best treated as the primary contemporaneous report rather than an audited total. TechCrunch reported the round and company details.

Why block storage is difficult to optimize

Cloud storage costs are not determined solely by how much data an application currently uses. Enterprises also pay for capacity reserved in advance, performance characteristics, availability buffers, snapshots, replication, and—in some cases—provisioned IOPS or throughput.

A database might actively use only part of a volume while still needing substantial performance headroom. Conversely, a volume with low IOPS may contain data that is expected to grow quickly. Teams therefore tend to overprovision capacity because running out of disk space can cause application failures, emergency engineering work, or downtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage is also more operationally sensitive than many compute changes. Expanding a volume generally creates more room for a filesystem or application. Shrinking one requires proving that data, partitions, logical volumes, filesystem metadata, database files, and recovery mechanisms all fit inside the smaller boundary.

A careless reduction can cause data loss or filesystem corruption. Cloud-provider APIs may make expansion straightforward while leaving filesystem and application-level operations to the customer. That risk helps explain why enterprises often tolerate unused storage rather than automate reductions.

TechCrunch cited a Deloitte estimate that as much as 30% of cloud spending may be wasted. That is a broad estimate about cloud spending generally—not evidence that every enterprise wastes 30% of its block-storage budget or that Lucidity can recover that amount.

What Lucidity sells

AutoScaler

At the time of the Series A announcement, Lucidity described its product as Storage Auto-Scaler. Its current website calls it AutoScaler and positions it as a control layer for AWS EBS, Azure Managed Disks, and Google Cloud Persistent Disks.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lucidity says AutoScaler monitors application and storage signals, expands volumes as workloads grow, and shrinks them when excess capacity is identified. The company says its decisions consider IOPS, throughput, latency, burst behavior, and historical patterns—not merely the percentage of disk space in use.

Current product materials claim expansion response in under 60 seconds and shrink completion in roughly two to four minutes. Lucidity also says the service requires no application-code changes or storage migration, logs its actions, and supports reversibility. These are vendor-provided product claims and should be tested against the volume types, operating systems, and workloads in a buyer’s environment.

Current documentation describes AutoScaler as using a lightweight agent on each host instance for monitoring and execution. For AWS EKS, Lucidity says it supports a CSI-driver replacement. The agent model creates practical deployment questions involving operating-system support, upgrades, network access, privileges, endpoint-security software, and behavior if the agent or control plane becomes unavailable. Lucidity’s AutoScaler product page lists its current capabilities.

Assessment

The original product described in the funding coverage was Storage Audit, a free tool intended to estimate potential storage waste and savings. Lucidity’s current site presents Assessment as a free, self-service, read-only analysis across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters. A read-only assessment can identify utilization, waste, and possible downtime risk without changing production infrastructure. It is not equivalent to enabling autonomous volume resizing. Buyers should separately evaluate the permissions, controls, testing, and rollback mechanisms required for production automation. Lucidity describes the current Assessment workflow here.

Lumen

Lucidity’s current portfolio also includes Lumen, an agentless visibility and recommendation layer. The company says Lumen can inventory storage, identify idle disks, recommend storage-tier changes, and execute or roll back actions across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.

This broadens Lucidity’s pitch beyond live-volume resizing into multi-cloud storage governance and cleanup. It still does not make Lucidity a general-purpose optimizer for every type of cloud storage.

How live-volume shrinking is supposed to work

Lucidity says it reduces the buffer around application data rather than directly manipulating the data itself. The company has not publicly disclosed enough implementation detail to independently verify the mechanism, and its co-founder told TechCrunch that the company was filing patents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The relevant technical question is not simply whether a cloud provider permits a volume-size change. A safe system must account for:

  • Filesystem free space and metadata.
  • Partitions, logical volumes, and operating-system behavior.
  • Databases with preallocated files.
  • Current and expected IOPS, throughput, latency, and burst needs.
  • Snapshots, replication, backup jobs, and recovery procedures.
  • Cloud-provider, region, operating-system, and volume-family limitations.

Lucidity’s claim of “zero downtime” should therefore be read as a product claim for supported configurations, not a universal property of all cloud volumes. Buyers should request a supported-configuration matrix and require proof that resizing does not worsen latency, performance, backup integrity, or incident rates.

What “cloud storage” does—and does not—mean here

Lucidity’s core focus is block storage, commonly attached to virtual machines and used for operating-system disks, databases, enterprise applications, and persistent Kubernetes workloads.

Sandisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 2000MB/s Transfer Speeds-New Model | External Solid State Drive, IP65 Water & Dust Resistant, Up to 3M Drop Protection, 256-bit AES Encryption, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2
  • NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
  • IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
  • POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
  • SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
  • 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.

That differs from:

  • Object storage: Services such as Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, and Google Cloud Storage, typically used for backups, media, data lakes, and archives.
  • File storage: Managed network filesystems such as Amazon EFS, Azure Files, and Google Filestore.
  • Managed database storage: Storage abstractions controlled inside database services.
  • Backup and archival storage: Usually optimized through retention policies, compression, and access tiers rather than live-volume resizing.

Lucidity’s FAQ says object storage is on the roadmap rather than its principal current focus. An enterprise that mainly stores data in S3, Blob Storage, or Google Cloud Storage should not assume AutoScaler addresses its largest storage costs. Lucidity’s FAQ explains the company’s stated storage scope.

How credible is the savings claim?

Lucidity markets savings of up to 70% on cloud block-storage costs. Its materials also cite enterprise utilization figures around 30%, examples reaching roughly 73% to 80%, and selected case studies reporting reductions such as 52% or $90,000 per month.

Those figures should be treated as vendor claims, not independent benchmarks. “Up to” is not an average, and a reduction in provisioned capacity does not necessarily produce the same reduction in the total cloud bill.

Actual economics depend on:

  • Cloud provider, region, volume family, and pricing model.
  • Provisioned IOPS and throughput charges.
  • Snapshots, backups, replication, and minimum charges.
  • Reserved-capacity or committed-use discounts.
  • Workload volatility and required safety buffers.
  • Lucidity’s licensing, implementation, and operational costs.

A credible proof of value should compare baseline and post-deployment capacity charges, total storage-related spending, performance metrics, incident rates, and any new software costs. It should also distinguish capacity savings from total cloud-bill savings.

Lucidity versus native tools and internal automation

Single-cloud customers already have native options, including AWS Compute Optimizer, Azure Advisor, and Google Cloud Recommender. These services can provide recommendations and utilization information, although Lucidity positions its own platform as more focused on autonomous storage actions across multiple clouds.

Large enterprises can also build internal workflows using cloud APIs, CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Google Cloud monitoring, Terraform, Pulumi, serverless functions, and change-management systems. Internal automation avoids another vendor but requires continuing investment in testing, observability, rollback design, ownership, and support for heterogeneous workloads.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Lucidity’s argument is that block-storage automation is specialized and risky enough to justify a dedicated control layer. Whether that is economical depends on the customer’s block-storage spend, engineering capacity, cloud mix, and tolerance for third-party infrastructure agents.

Lucidity’s FAQ discusses Zesty as a more Kubernetes-native alternative and positions Lucidity as broader for multi-cloud and Windows-on-Azure use cases. That comparison comes from Lucidity and should not be treated as independent market research. Zesty provides its own product description.

Who is the best fit?

Lucidity is most relevant to organizations with large fleets of cloud block-storage volumes, self-managed databases or virtual machines, unpredictable growth, and a centralized FinOps or platform-engineering function.

It may be a weaker fit for small environments, object-storage-heavy businesses, fully managed application architectures, teams that cannot install agents or grant infrastructure permissions, or workloads whose storage costs are already heavily offset by cloud commitments.

Enterprise buyer checklist

  1. Confirm scope: Ask which volume types, operating systems, filesystems, Kubernetes configurations, regions, and managed databases are supported.
  2. Review permissions: Determine whether the host agent requires root or administrator privileges and what cloud IAM permissions are needed.
  3. Test failure behavior: Ask what happens if the agent, network connection, control plane, or cloud-provider API is unavailable.
  4. Validate shrink safety: Require details on filesystem checks, databases with preallocated files, snapshots, backups, recovery points, deny lists, and approval workflows.
  5. Measure performance: Compare IOPS, throughput, latency, burst behavior, and application incidents before and after optimization.
  6. Verify reversibility: Establish how quickly a volume can be re-expanded and who can authorize rollback.
  7. Model net economics: Include license fees, implementation work, cloud commitments, provisioned performance charges, backups, and replication.
  8. Request evidence: Ask for customer references and before-and-after billing and utilization data. Lucidity says it is SOC 2 Type II certified; buyers should request the report and confirm its scope.

Bottom line

Lucidity’s opportunity is credible as a specialized infrastructure problem: enterprises often overprovision block storage because shrinking live volumes is operationally risky. Its AutoScaler, Lumen, and Assessment products address different stages of that problem, from visibility to autonomous changes.

The $21 million Series A gives Lucidity capital to expand sales and product development, but funding does not validate the company’s savings or zero-downtime claims. The decisive test for buyers is whether Lucidity can safely deliver repeatable, net savings across their specific cloud providers, volume types, operating systems, and workloads.
