Why do reports give different figures?
The Associated Press reported a $20.3 million tally for copyrights, music-publishing interests, and other assets. It explicitly said the tally excluded Reed’s East Hampton home and Manhattan apartment. The Guardian’s $30 million figure was described as the value of the estate, alongside its account of post-death accumulation and distributions. Because the reports describe figures with different scopes, they should not be treated as competing measurements of the same asset pool or averaged into a new estimate. Who inherited Lou Reed’s estate?
Contemporary reporting on Reed’s 2013 will identified his wife, Laurie Anderson, and sister, Margaret Reed Weiner, as beneficiaries. The Guardian’s later coverage discussed property and monetary bequests to Anderson and a further distribution to Weiner. Does the estate have a current published valuation?
No newer comparable estate valuation is established by the cited reporting. The 2014 numbers should therefore be presented as historical figures, not adjusted or relabeled as a 2026 net-worth estimate. Reed’s copyrights and publishing interests are documented as parts of the estate, but their current value or income is not established by these reports.
