The company said the trip had been planned a year earlier and announced several forms of wildfire relief, including a $250,000 commitment to World Central Kitchen. Those were announced commitments; the contemporaneous reporting and Tarte’s current pages do not independently confirm that each was completed.
What happened during the Los Angeles wildfires?
A January 12, 2025, report by PerthNow said Tarte Cosmetics proceeded with a creator trip to Necker Island while wildfires were affecting Los Angeles. Tarte described the trip as having been planned a year in advance.
The timing drew criticism because the island trip was a promotional event during a disaster affecting the home region of some creators and followers. Critics questioned whether Tarte should cancel and donate instead; others praised the relief measures the company announced. These comments show differing reactions reported at the time, not a measurement of overall public opinion.
What wildfire relief did Tarte announce?
PerthNow reported that Tarte announced a $10,000 contribution on behalf of each attending creator, for a total of $250,000 to World Central Kitchen for California wildfire relief. The report reproduced the brand’s statement: “This trip, we’re donating $10K on behalf of each creator attending, for a total of $250K to @wckitchen to support wildfire relief efforts in California.”

The same report said Tarte also committed to donating 100% of net proceeds from sales on tarte.com between January 8 and January 11, 2025, to World Central Kitchen, and to continuing deliveries of self-care kits to evacuation shelters. The report did not quantify the sales proceeds.
These details describe what Tarte said it would do. Tarte’s current giving-back page includes other charitable and disaster-relief material, but the material reviewed does not independently verify the specific January 2025 World Central Kitchen commitments. Its current trip page lists Necker Island, 2025 and a $1 million natural-disaster-relief message; that retrospective brand material is not independent confirmation of the specific January announcement.

How did creators and commenters respond?
PerthNow described the response as mixed. Some commenters praised the announced relief, while others urged Tarte to cancel the trip and donate instead, objecting to the optics of a luxury island event during the fires. One commenter put the demand bluntly: “Just cancel it & donate.” That is an individual comment, not evidence of a broader consensus.
The report also said creator Tana Mongeau reposted Tarte’s response and had not decided whether to attend. Her reported remarks described having nowhere else to stay and needing to evacuate, while expressing heartbreak about the scale of the devastation. Her circumstances should not be assumed to represent those of every invited creator.

Why the decision drew criticism
The dispute brought two concerns into conflict: a company said it had organized the trip well in advance and announced aid, while critics argued that proceeding with conspicuous luxury marketing during a regional emergency was inappropriate. Both the event’s timing and the relief announcements mattered to the debate.
The available reporting does not establish whether canceling would have generated more relief, what costs cancellation might have involved, or whether the announced donations, sales proceeds and shelter deliveries were completed.
