California diesel averaged $8.35 per gallon during the reporting week covered by the Los Angeles Times on October 7, 2026, compared with $6.32 nationally, according to the newspaper’s AAA reference. For the owner-operators and trucking companies it interviewed, the increase was already squeezing operating margins: fuel bills rose faster than some customers’ rates, and smaller firms said they had less room than larger competitors to absorb the difference.
What the reported $8 price measures
The Los Angeles Times reported a California diesel average of $8.35 per gallon during its reporting week and a national average of $6.32. The paper described California’s figure as 32% above the national average. These are the article’s period-specific AAA-referenced averages, not a quote for every station or a price every Los Angeles carrier paid.
Other price series offer useful context, but they measure prices on different schedules and should not be treated as interchangeable:
- AAA daily state average: AAA’s California fuel page showed $8.3666 per gallon on September 22, 2026. That is a dated daily state figure, not a current or Los Angeles-specific quote. AAA Fuel Prices: California.
- EIA weekly on-highway series: The Energy Information Administration’s October 6, 2026 update includes Los Angeles and California figures. Its table includes values of $6.209 for Los Angeles and $8.082 for California among multiple columns; the figures need to be read with the table’s date and column headings, rather than presented as October 7 retail prices. EIA Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update.
Daily state averages, weekly on-highway regional prices, and the Times’ reporting-week comparison answer different questions. They also do not establish what any particular operator paid, which depends on where and when that operator bought fuel.

How fuel costs are squeezing trucking businesses
Higher fill-up bills hit cash flow quickly
Truck operator Jagroop Singh Deol told the Times a full tank that cost about $1,000 at the start of the year was costing more than $1,600. Roadies chief executive Avninder Singh said the company was spending $450,000 a month on fuel and that a tank fill had risen from $1,200 to $2,400. Those are examples from the businesses interviewed, not typical costs for every truck or a sector-wide average.
Deol said, “We’re not making money,” and described trucking as “not a stable business.” Singh said, “We have literally no margin on it. Like we are running and not making any money.” Their accounts illustrate the cash-flow problem: fuel is a recurring operating expense, while a carrier may not be able to change what it charges customers as quickly.

Smaller carriers may have less leverage to adjust rates
The Times reported that small operators often cannot raise rates as quickly as larger competitors when fuel prices spike. The businesses it interviewed said expenses were outpacing customer rates. The report does not quantify how much of the increase carriers have passed on, or establish a national pass-through rate.
Lewie Pugh, executive vice president of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Assn., said: “While big oil companies have seen their profits nearly double this year, the sharp increase in diesel cost has quickly eaten up what little margin mom-and-pop trucking businesses have left.” This is Pugh’s characterization of the pressure on smaller firms, not a measure of every carrier’s profitability.

What operators said they are doing
Buying fuel outside California when routes allow
One reported tactic is to route drivers to fill up in Arizona before returning to California. It can reduce exposure to California prices when a route and fuel stop make that practical. The Times did not quantify the savings, and the account does not establish that rerouting is feasible for every load or carrier.
Rewarding slower driving and less idling
Companies described bonuses tied to reduced idling and slower driving. These measures target fuel use rather than the pump price. The report provides no measured savings or comparison showing how much either practice offsets higher prices.

Using battery-powered cab air conditioning while parked
Deol said he installed battery-powered electric air-conditioning systems in both trucks so drivers could switch the engine off while parked. “If we sleep, if we park, we can turn off the motors,” he said. The article does not identify the equipment’s make or model, provide installation details, or quantify fuel savings, so it does not support a product recommendation or a specific payback estimate.
What the report says about causes—and what it does not
The Times situated the price pressure alongside the war with Iran, administration policy changes, and trucking labor and freight-market pressures. Its account does not isolate the contribution of any one factor to the pump-price increase. The price figures and operator examples show the strain described in the report; they do not, by themselves, establish a causal breakdown or prove that the interviewed firms represent the wider trucking industry.

Singh put the concern starkly: “Any American trucking company cannot survive at $8 a gallon.” That is his warning, not a verified conclusion about every American trucking company. The reported experiences show why a business with thin margins and limited ability to adjust rates can face acute pressure when fuel costs jump, but the article supplies no sector-wide margin data or common break-even price.
For personal-finance readers, the key point is narrower than a prediction about consumer prices: the interviewed operators said their fuel expenses were rising faster than customer rates. The report does not measure how much those costs have reached freight prices or retail goods.
