REI appointed Cameron Janes, a longtime Amazon executive who worked on the company’s physical retail business, as its first chief commercial officer in an announcement reported December 1, 2021. The newly created role was scheduled to begin January 3, 2022.
Who is Cameron Janes?
Janes had spent more than 14 years at Amazon. At the time of REI’s announcement, he was a vice president working on Amazon’s physical retail stores; GeekWire reported that he had left Amazon the month before.
What did he do at Amazon?
Janes’s brick-and-mortar work began in 2015, when Amazon opened its first physical bookstore at Seattle’s University Village. The company later introduced other physical retail concepts, including Amazon Go, Amazon 4-star and Amazon Fresh. The announcement coverage identifies his experience with these businesses but does not detail specific duties or define the new REI role’s remit beyond its chief commercial officer title.
Why did Janes say he joined REI?
In a statement about the appointment, Janes described the work as both an opportunity and a responsibility: “I consider this an incredible opportunity but also a great responsibility to get to help grow and progress an organization that is focused on making the outdoors accessible for all.”

What other leadership changes did REI announce?
Alongside Janes’s appointment, REI promoted Kelley Hall to executive vice president and chief financial officer, and Vivienne Long to senior vice president and chief marketing officer.
REI’s scale at the time of the announcement
GeekWire reported that REI had revenue of $2.7 billion in 2020, down from $3.1 billion in 2019, and more than 20 million members across 174 locations. These are figures reported in December 2021 and should not be read as current company metrics.
