Longshot Space’s September 2024 funding news was about a little over $5 million in combined venture and non-dilutive funding, including U.S. Air Force TACFI support, to develop a planned 500-meter accelerator in Nevada. That was a development plan, not a completed space-launch system. Longshot later announced a separate $5 million South Park Commons investment in June 2026 and reported $20 million in total funding.
What Longshot Space raised—and when
The headline refers to Longshot’s September 25, 2024 announcement, covered by TechCrunch. The report described a little over $5 million in combined venture and non-dilutive funding, including support through the U.S. Air Force’s Tactical Funding Increase (TACFI) program. The money was intended to advance the company’s large ground-based accelerator and its Nevada test-site plan.
That funding should not be conflated with a later investment. On June 23, 2026, Longshot announced a $5 million investment from South Park Commons and said its total funding had reached $20 million. The two announcements refer to separate funding events; the later figure is Longshot’s reported cumulative total, not a revised description of the 2024 round. Longshot’s 2026 announcement
What the “space gun” is designed to do
Longshot’s concept is a ground-based, multi-injection accelerator: infrastructure on the ground accelerates a payload to hypersonic speed before release. The company presents repeatable hypersonic testing as a nearer-term application and putting payloads on a path toward orbit as a longer-term ambition. It is not a conventional gun that has already demonstrated orbital launches.

The pitch is to keep much of the propulsion infrastructure on the ground rather than carry it through flight, as a rocket does. That makes the approach fundamentally different, but the available figures do not establish a commercial cost advantage over rockets. Payloads would also have to tolerate very high acceleration. TechCrunch reported that Longshot was aiming at rugged cargo rather than people and described the acceleration as far beyond the forces experienced during ordinary rocket takeoff. The company’s CEO, Mike Grace, said of the Oakland prototype, “We’d prefer not to blow ourselves and other people up.” TechCrunch, September 25, 2024
What has been tested—and what remains a target
Longshot’s timeline reports that its 2023 Oakland prototype was 6 inches in diameter and 60 feet long, and achieved Mach 4.2. That is a company-reported prototype milestone, not evidence that a full-size system can launch payloads into orbit. Longshot’s company timeline

A government Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) portfolio record describes a previously tested system that drove a 500-gram projectile to Mach 2.5. The same record presents larger performance figures as proposed scale-up targets: 100 kilograms at Mach 5 or 20 kilograms at Mach 7. Those targets are proposals, not demonstrated results. Longshot’s June 2026 announcement says its test facility is designed to accelerate 100-kilogram payloads to speeds exceeding Mach 5. That is a stated design objective, not independently verified achieved performance. The announcement does not establish an operational orbital-launch capability. Longshot’s June 2026 announcement

Nevada plan versus the later Alameda project
The 2024 TechCrunch report described a planned 500-meter gun in Nevada. Longshot’s later company timeline records a different, subsequent milestone: it says the company broke ground in 2025 on a 30-inch, 120-foot accelerator at Alameda Point. These are distinct plans and facilities, and the available reports do not establish the present status of the Nevada project.
| Project or milestone | Reported details | What the report establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Nevada plan, reported September 2024 | 500-meter test gun | A planned project in TechCrunch’s reporting; current construction or operating status is not established. Source |
| Alameda Point, reported on Longshot’s timeline | 30-inch, 120-foot accelerator | Longshot says it broke ground in 2025; the timeline entry does not establish completed or operational status. Source |
What the funding and later testing news signal
For a personal-finance reader, the key distinction is between capital raised to develop a technology and proof that the technology works at commercial scale. The 2024 funding report shows that Longshot had venture and government-backed support for development; it does not demonstrate that the company can provide routine launches or generate launch revenue.

On July 8, 2026, Longshot announced a position in the AEDC Velocity Alliance and described its system as a potential high-cadence hypersonic-testing capability. That is a company-reported consortium position—not proof of a completed contract, deployed system, or operational service. Longshot’s July 8, 2026 announcement
Accordingly, the “space gun” story is best understood as an early-stage aerospace development effort with a nearer-term testing rationale and a more speculative long-term space-access goal. The Nevada facility’s current status, the larger proposed performance targets, and orbital launches are not established by the sources cited here.
