That announcement is historical: the available source does not establish whether either offering is open now, where it is available, or what it costs today.
What Loam Bio announced for the 2024 season
In a January 12, 2024 report, Successful Farming said Loam Bio planned to make CarbonBuilder and SecondCrop available to soybean farmers in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin for that season. The report describes a launch plan, not current enrollment or availability.
For farmers considering the offerings now, the key unanswered questions include eligible locations and crops, current pricing and incentives, program requirements, contract terms, and how any carbon credits or payments are handled. The 2024 article does not settle those details for the present day.
How CarbonBuilder was described
Successful Farming described CarbonBuilder as a selected-fungi biological applied directly to soybean seed at planting. The product was presented as using a dry-flowable lubrication approach and as a possible substitute for graphite talc powder. Loam Bio senior vice president of U.S. commercial operations Kevin Hodges described a 10-pound pouch containing 50% biologicals and 50% graphite talc, applied to seed so it adheres and enters the furrow at planting.

- High Yield Bush Growth: midori giant edamame seeds form 24-36 inch nitrogen-fixing bushes, rewarding vegetable garden growers in USDA 3-9 with crunchy pods rich in complete protein.
- Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
- Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
- Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
- Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.
The article also reported compatibility with most additional seed treatments and said later herbicide applications could be made without damaging effectiveness. Those are claims in a 2024 publication, not a substitute for a current product label or application guidance. Confirm compatibility and instructions with Loam Bio before use.
What the 2024 cost estimate does—and does not—tell farmers
Successful Farming reported an estimated historical cost of $13–$18 per acre. The figure depended on seeding rate and available rebates or incentives. It is not a present-day quote and should not be used to budget a current purchase without confirmation from the company.

How SecondCrop was structured in the report
SecondCrop was described as a carbon program paired with CarbonBuilder. The article said use of CarbonBuilder at planting was the program’s way of addressing additionality—the idea that credited carbon benefits should be linked to an action beyond what would otherwise have happened. Hodges summarized that rationale by saying, “The concern around additionality is solved by the farmer applying CarbonBuilder at the time of planting.” This is the company’s stated program rationale, not independent proof that additionality or carbon storage is achieved.
The reported historical terms were an initial two-year commitment followed by four-year subsequent commitments. Carbon was to be measured directly every two years, with verified credits issued after sequestration was confirmed. These details do not establish the current contract, sampling protocol, verification standard, credit timing, payment terms, or who carries measurement or reversal risk.

Carbon and agronomic benefits remain claims to evaluate
Loam Bio presented CarbonBuilder as intended to support additional carbon sequestration, with possible agronomic benefits. CEO Guy Hudson said the products were designed with carbon and agronomic benefits in mind, and linked faster sequestration with potential improvements such as water infiltration and nutrient access. These are company claims about intended outcomes, not established field results.

Climate Break’s interview notes discuss Loam Bio’s proposed fungi-based mechanism and explicitly say further testing and monitoring are needed to assess benefits and impacts in operating conditions. The available material does not establish a dependable quantitative performance estimate for a farm, nor does it provide a basis to treat carbon credits or revenue as guaranteed.

- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.
