Meta Platforms, Inc. owns or controls major businesses including Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, Threads, Meta AI, Meta Pay and Reality Labs. However, those names are not all separate companies. Some are legal subsidiaries, while others are products, brands or operating businesses.
The latest publicly disclosed principal-subsidiary list, filed by Meta for the year ended December 31, 2025, names nine entities. It is an official baseline, but not a complete worldwide register of every company in Meta’s corporate group.

This is a list of principal subsidiaries, not every Meta affiliate, regional entity, inactive company or subsidiary held through another entity. That is why the legal list is shorter than the list of recognizable Meta services.

Major companies, brands and businesses operated by Meta
Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K divides its operations into two segments: Family of Apps and Reality Labs. The following are the major public-facing businesses most readers mean when they ask which companies Meta owns.

Meta changed its corporate name from Facebook, Inc. to Meta Platforms, Inc. in 2021. The change also introduced the Family of Apps and Reality Labs reporting structure; it did not mean that every product became a newly independent company. Meta’s announcement explains the change.
Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads and Meta AI as Family of Apps products and describes Reality Labs as the company’s AR/VR business.
Major companies Meta acquired
Instagram — acquired in 2012
Facebook acquired Instagram in 2012. Instagram remains one of Meta’s most important consumer businesses, and Instagram, LLC is included in Meta’s latest principal-subsidiary disclosure. It is therefore both a recognizable acquired brand and associated with a currently disclosed legal entity.

WhatsApp — acquired in 2014
Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014. WhatsApp continues to operate as a major Meta messaging business, and WhatsApp LLC appears in the latest principal-subsidiary list.
Oculus VR — acquired in 2014
Facebook acquired Oculus in 2014. Oculus helped establish Meta’s VR business, but the consumer branding has substantially shifted to Meta Quest and the wider Reality Labs organization. Oculus is best described today as an acquired VR business and legacy brand, not automatically as a current standalone principal subsidiary.
Within — announced acquisition involving Supernatural
Within developed Supernatural, a VR fitness application. Meta publicly described its planned acquisition of Within in 2022 and said the Federal Trade Commission sued to block the transaction. Because the supplied current filing does not establish a complete present-day legal status for Within, the careful description is that Meta announced and pursued the acquisition of Within, rather than asserting unconditional current ownership.
Meta’s statement about the Within transaction provides the company’s account of the proposed deal and FTC litigation.

Why old Meta acquisition lists can be misleading
Meta has acquired many other businesses over time, but an acquisition list is not automatically a list of companies Meta still operates. Acquired businesses can remain visible brands, become technology inside another product, close, be sold or be retained primarily for personnel and intellectual property.
Meta’s 2025 filing also reports that it completed acquisitions during 2025, with consideration of approximately $4.09 billion in cash and $450 million in Meta Class A common stock. The filing says those acquisitions were not individually or collectively significant enough to require pro forma historical results and does not provide a complete consumer-facing roster of the acquired company names in that disclosure.
That means no public article should claim that it has a definitive list of every company Meta owns based solely on the annual report or on an old “Meta acquisitions” roundup.

Does Meta still own Instagram and WhatsApp?
According to Meta’s latest public filings, yes. Instagram, LLC and WhatsApp LLC are named in Exhibit 21.1, while Instagram and WhatsApp remain part of Meta’s Family of Apps.

There is an important legal qualification. The FTC’s antitrust case concerned Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp. Meta’s filing records a judgment in Meta’s favor on November 18, 2025, followed by the FTC’s notice of appeal on January 20, 2026. The appeal could affect the companies’ future structure if it ultimately leads to remedies, but its outcome and any remedy should not be predicted.
Companies Meta does not own
Partnerships, licensing arrangements, investments and distribution relationships do not make the other party a Meta subsidiary. Important examples include:
- Ray-Ban: Meta partners with EssilorLuxottica on smart glasses; Meta does not own Ray-Ban.
- Oakley: Oakley-branded Meta glasses do not mean Meta owns Oakley.
- EssilorLuxottica: The smart-glasses relationship is a partnership, not evidence that Meta owns the eyewear company.
- Llama ecosystem participants: Companies that use, license, integrate with or support Meta’s Llama models are not necessarily owned by Meta.
- Quest developers: An independent developer can distribute an app through the Meta Quest store without being a Meta subsidiary.
- Strategic and infrastructure partners: Companies such as investment, cloud, hardware or regional partners are not automatically owned because they work with Meta.
How to interpret “owned by Meta”
For accuracy, classify each name into the right category:
- Legal subsidiary: An incorporated entity controlled by Meta, such as Instagram, LLC or WhatsApp LLC.
- Product or platform: A service such as Facebook, Messenger, Threads or Meta AI.
- Brand: A consumer-facing name such as Meta Quest or the legacy Oculus brand.
- Operating segment: A reporting and business organization such as Reality Labs.
- Acquired company: A business purchased by Meta that may later remain independent, be integrated or change status.
- Investment or partner: A company connected to Meta commercially without being controlled by it.
For a current answer, the most reliable method is to use Meta’s latest annual report and principal-subsidiary exhibit, then separately check acquisition announcements, divestitures, regulatory orders and product shutdowns.
How often should this list be updated?
Review the legal-subsidiary section after each annual report. Review the brand and acquisition sections whenever Meta announces a major purchase, sale, closure, reorganization or regulatory development. Always distinguish an acquisition announcement from the transaction’s closing date, and distinguish a brand’s continued use from the existence of a separate legal company.
