LinkedIn marketing combines a credible Page, useful professional content and optional paid advertising. Start with a business objective, define the audience and measurement, then decide whether a campaign needs paid distribution.

LinkedIn marketing is the use of a LinkedIn Page, professional content, audience engagement and, optionally, paid advertising to support a business goal. You can market on LinkedIn without buying ads: paid campaigns are an extra way to distribute content to selected audiences, not a requirement or a guarantee of leads or sales.

What is LinkedIn marketing?

For a business, LinkedIn marketing means building a credible presence among professionals, sharing useful content and engaging people who may be relevant to the business. A LinkedIn Page gives an organization a central presence on the platform; LinkedIn’s 2025 guide recommends creating one before setting up a first ad campaign. LinkedIn’s guide to getting started reported more than 1 billion professionals on LinkedIn in 2025. That is LinkedIn’s own platform figure, not an independent audit of reachable advertising audiences.

Marketing can be organic, paid or a combination. Organic activity includes maintaining the Page and publishing content. Paid activity uses LinkedIn’s advertising tools to distribute ads to an audience selected using professional and company attributes. LinkedIn’s marketing solutions overview describes options including Sponsored Content, Text Ads, Sponsored Messaging and Dynamic Ads. Formats and their availability can change, so check the current Ads Guide and Campaign Manager before planning creative.

How can a business use LinkedIn marketing?

Start with the outcome you want, then choose an audience and activities that plausibly support it. LinkedIn groups campaign objectives under awareness, consideration and conversions. The right choice depends on what you need people to do—not on a promise that a particular objective will produce a specific business result.

  1. Choose a business objective. Decide what matters: awareness, engagement, a website visit, a lead, a sale or another observable action. Ask, “What action do I want customers to take after seeing this?”
  2. Define the professional audience. Identify the people and organizations relevant to the offer. Depending on current settings, LinkedIn targeting can use attributes such as company, job title, seniority, skills, schools, interests and groups. Select criteria that fit the objective rather than narrowing the audience without a business reason.
  3. Choose an organic and paid mix. Keep the Page useful and current with content relevant to its intended audience. If you need controlled distribution for a defined campaign, consider paid promotion. Organic posting does not require an ad campaign budget, but it still takes staff time and content; paid advertising adds budget and campaign management.
  4. Choose the format and placement. Match the ad format to the action you want people to take, and check current specifications in Campaign Manager. LinkedIn’s guide to LinkedIn ad types outlines formats, but current options should be verified in the platform.
  5. Set campaign controls. Configure the objective, audience, format, placement, budget and schedule in Campaign Manager according to the campaign setup you choose. Review the creative against the current requirements before launch. LinkedIn does not establish one universal budget or minimum that applies to every campaign.
  6. Plan measurement before launch. Define what counts as a meaningful result and how you will observe it. If you need website conversion reporting, decide on conversion tracking and URL parameters before publishing the campaign.
  7. Review and adjust. Compare results with the objective you selected. LinkedIn recommends monitoring impressions, clicks, social actions and budget, then considering changes to creative, targeting, budget or ad variations. Treat these as platform metrics; connect them to business outcomes where your tracking allows.

Organic LinkedIn activity or paid advertising?

These approaches can work together, but they have different controls and measurement contexts. Choose based on the business goal, available time and whether a defined campaign justifies ad spend.

Consideration Organic activity Paid campaigns
Distribution Builds an ongoing Page presence through content and engagement. Adds controlled distribution to audiences selected in campaign settings.
Cost and control No ad campaign budget is required; staff time and content are still needed. Uses campaign budgets and schedules, with audience and delivery controls.
Measurement Set a business goal and assess activity against it. Campaign Manager provides campaign reporting; relate platform metrics to business outcomes where possible.
Typical planning horizon Ongoing presence and engagement. A defined objective such as visits, leads or conversions.

Neither route guarantees a particular return. LinkedIn reported in 2025 that its share of B2B ad budgets rose from 31% to 39% in 2024; this is a company-reported budget-share figure, not evidence that campaigns on the platform are more effective or profitable.

How do LinkedIn ads work in Campaign Manager?

Campaign Manager is LinkedIn’s self-service advertising platform. LinkedIn describes it as “LinkedIn’s online tool for creating and managing ad accounts and advertising campaigns” in its Campaign Manager overview.

The current help materials describe a hierarchy of ad account, campaign, ad set and ad. The account manages items such as payment, permissions and shared assets; the campaign structure organizes settings for objectives, audiences, delivery and spend. Setup options depend on the campaign type and interface. See LinkedIn’s campaign setup guide and Campaign Manager navigation help for the platform’s current descriptions.

Which LinkedIn marketing metrics should you define?

Pick measures that correspond to the intended business action, and decide how they will be tracked before you launch. Impressions and clicks can show whether an ad was delivered and interacted with; by themselves, they do not establish leads, revenue or return on investment.

  • Awareness: define whether reach or impressions are relevant to your goal.
  • Consideration: decide whether clicks, visits, engagement or another intermediate action matters.
  • Conversions: specify the conversion action—such as a completed lead form or purchase—and the tracking method needed to count it.
  • Business outcome: where possible, connect platform reporting to the outcomes the business actually values, rather than treating a platform metric as a substitute.

Where can beginners learn LinkedIn marketing?

LinkedIn Marketing Academy offers digital learning paths covering topics such as content strategy, advertising, measurement, campaign strategy, events, video and Business Manager. Its learning paths are a practical starting point; LinkedIn says a profile is needed to join. The LinkedIn Ads Certifications page describes courses and certifications for individuals, teams and agency members. The page currently lists 500K+ learners without specifying a reference year, so treat that as a page figure rather than a dated annual statistic.
