Linde differs from other industrial-gas suppliers by combining gas production and delivery with engineering and construction of gas plants. It sells atmospheric and process gases through onsite, merchant and packaged supply, while its economics depend on local infrastructure, customer contracts, energy costs and project execution—not global scale alone.

What Linde sells—and where engineering fits

Linde’s gas portfolio spans atmospheric gases—oxygen, nitrogen, argon and rare gases—and process gases including hydrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, electronic and specialty gases, and acetylene. It also engineers and builds air-separation, hydrogen, natural-gas and other process plants. That makes its business broader than selling gases: it also competes for engineering and construction work. Linde 2025 Form 10-K.

Linde reported consolidated sales of $33,986 million in 2025, compared with $33,005 million in 2024 and $32,854 million in 2023, according to its 2025 Form 10-K. The company described 2025 sales as $34 billion in its February 5, 2026 results release; that is the rounded version of the same annual figure, not a separate measure. How industrial-gas suppliers deliver products

The supply mode shapes the customer relationship and the infrastructure required. Linde describes three principal modes:

#1 Best Overall
PD-100 Full Face Respirator Mask – Industrial & Survival Mask with Dual P-A-1 Organic Vapor & Particulate Filters, EN136:1998 CL2 Certified, Tyvek & Hazmat Suit Compatible
  • CLEAR VISION: Full-face polycarbonate lens with anti-fog and impact-resistant design supports clear visibility during use. Suitable for woodworking, painting, and use with appropriate filters for certain chemicals, dust, and particulates.
  • COMFORTABLE FIT AND ADJUSTMENT: Soft silicone face seal and 6-point adjustable harness help create a consistent fit across a range of face shapes. Includes a passive speaking diaphragm to support clearer communication during use.
  • EASY FILTER REPLACEMENT: Tool-free bayonet connection allows for quick cartridge changes. Compatible with select bayonet-style cartridges for a range of industrial and workshop applications.
  • DURABLE CONSTRUCTION: Designed with a silicone face seal and impact-resistant lens. Chemical-resistant materials and a moldable nose area support repeated use and routine cleaning.
  • SUITABLE FOR MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS: Designed for use with appropriate filters to help reduce exposure to certain dust, particulates, and vapors. Can be included in workshop safety equipment or emergency preparedness supplies.
  • Onsite: A plant supplies a large customer’s needs at or near its facility, often through a direct connection. This is suited to substantial, ongoing demand.
  • Merchant: Gas is produced centrally and delivered to customers, commonly in bulk. Transport distance, storage and the supplier’s nearby assets affect the economics.
  • Packaged: Gas is supplied in cylinders or other containers for customers needing smaller quantities or flexible delivery.

Production facilities, pipeline complexes, distribution centers and delivery fleets together form a geographically distributed network. Linde says pipelines can be a competitive advantage when they provide reliable, economical supply to larger customers. The advantage is local: a global footprint does not guarantee that a supplier has the right pipeline, production capacity or delivery network at a particular site. Which companies compete with Linde?

Linde’s 2025 Form 10-K names Air Liquide, Air Products, Messer and Taiyo Nippon Sanso among its competitors. It also identifies smaller independent local producers and distributors. Competition spans both industrial-gas supply and engineering, so the relevant alternative depends on the customer’s gas requirements, location and project—not simply which company has the largest global profile. Comparison factor Why it matters What to check
Supply mode and local infrastructure Onsite plants, pipelines, bulk delivery and cylinders serve different volumes and logistics needs. Whether the supplier has suitable nearby production, pipeline reach, distribution and delivery capacity.
Gas and engineering portfolio Suppliers may differ in atmospheric gases, hydrogen and other process gases, specialty gases, and plant engineering. Whether the requirement is a gas supply contract, a plant project or both.
Customer and end-market mix Demand from healthcare, electronics, food, chemicals, energy, manufacturing, metals and mining can respond to different conditions. The markets and applications relevant to the specific supplier or facility; exposure is not uniform across competitors.
Geography and customer concentration Pipeline reach and production assets create local or regional advantages. Operating regions and site-level availability, rather than a global label alone.
Energy, contract and project economics Power and feedstock costs, contract terms and project execution influence costs and returns. How costs are allocated, how pricing adjusts and what obligations apply to a plant or supply contract.

A matched financial ranking of Air Liquide, Air Products, Messer and Taiyo Nippon Sanso is not established by the available company disclosures here. Comparing sales, margins, market share or backlog would require aligned reporting periods, currencies, definitions and segment structures. Air Liquide’s official publications page lists its 2025 annual report, but the figures needed for that comparison are not included in this article. Air Liquide annual reports.

End markets and hydrogen routes

Industrial gases support a broad range of applications, including healthcare, electronics, food and beverage, chemicals, energy, manufacturing, metals and mining. A supplier’s customer mix affects which demand drivers matter to its business. Linde’s investor page says about 62% of its sales come from healthcare, food and beverage, and electronics; this is a company-stated figure, not a like-for-like comparison across suppliers. Hydrogen also illustrates why product labels alone do not reveal a supplier’s business or emissions profile. Linde’s 2025 Form 10-K describes production from natural gas or methane, production from fossil feedstocks with carbon capture and sequestration, and renewable production by electrolysis using renewable power and water. These are different production routes; “clean hydrogen” should not be treated as one technology or as an independently verified emissions category. Linde 2025 Form 10-K.

Energy costs, contracts and project economics

“Energy is the single largest cost item in the production and distribution of industrial gases,” Linde states in its 2025 Form 10-K. The filing says Linde uses pricing formulas, surcharges, cost pass-through and tolling arrangements to mitigate price swings. Those mechanisms can help manage exposure; they do not mean energy costs or volatility disappear. Contract structures should not be assumed to be identical across suppliers or customers. Engineering projects add another set of considerations to the comparison. A sale-of-gas arrangement and a sale-of-plant project are different commercial activities, with different customer commitments and execution requirements. Linde’s investor strategy page currently states a project backlog of $11 billion, comprising $8.1 billion of sale-of-gas projects and $3 billion of sale-of-plant projects. These are Linde-reported figures from that page; they should be read according to the company’s backlog definitions and page timing, not as directly comparable peer figures. Linde investor page.
