Usually, you should not expect Walmart to sell or process a lifetime fishing license. Some Walmart stores advertise service for standard fishing licenses, but store listings do not confirm lifetime-license availability. Lifetime licenses are issued under state rules. In Texas, for example, the resident lifetime fishing application is processed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), not through a Walmart counter.
Can you buy a lifetime fishing license at Walmart?
Walmart advertises fishing-license service at some individual sporting-goods counters. Its Commerce, Texas store listing and Lake Wales, Florida store listing describe local license service. Neither listing establishes that the store sells lifetime licenses, and they do not show that every Walmart offers even standard licenses.
If you want a standard fishing license at Walmart, contact the specific store before making the trip. For a lifetime license, start with the wildlife agency in the state where you plan to fish and follow its stated application route.
How to find and apply for a lifetime license
- Choose the state. Fishing licenses are issued under state programs, so there is no single national lifetime-license price or eligibility rule.
- Check the state wildlife agency’s licensing page. Confirm that a lifetime option is available and review residency, age, and other eligibility requirements.
- Use the application channel the agency specifies. For Texas, TPWD says lifetime-license applications are processed only at a TPWD law enforcement office or Austin Headquarters. Its Lifetime Licenses page gives the current instructions.
- Confirm retailer service separately if buying a standard license. Call the Walmart location or check its local listing rather than assuming service is available chain-wide.
Texas lifetime fishing license: eligibility, price, and what it covers
Who can buy it?
TPWD limits Texas lifetime hunting and fishing license purchases to Texas residents. The department lists the Lifetime Resident Fishing Package as item 982. Eligibility and application details are on the TPWD lifetime-license page.

How much does it cost?
TPWD lists the Texas Lifetime Resident Fishing Package at $1,000. This is the department’s listed fee for that Texas resident package; it is not a nationwide price. Check the agency page before applying in case its fee or rules have changed.
Does “lifetime” mean no other requirements?
Not necessarily. TPWD says the Texas lifetime license includes state endorsements except the reptile and amphibian endorsement. Lifetime holders may also need applicable tags or certifications. The fishing tags are distinct from the underlying license: TPWD says lifetime tags are available through state channels at no additional fee, with digital tags available online and physical tags available from retailers or online. Review the TPWD lifetime-license details for the requirements that apply to your fishing activity.

Eligibility groups and license benefits differ by state, so prices should be compared only with those differences in view. For example, Pennsylvania’s official pricing page lists a 2026 senior resident lifetime fishing license for anglers age 65 and older at $86.97. That is a different program from Texas’s resident package, not a like-for-like alternative. Check the current rules and application channel with the relevant state agency.

What to confirm before paying
- Whether your state offers a lifetime fishing license.
- Whether you meet its residency, age, and other eligibility conditions.
- The current fee and the agency’s required application method.
- Whether tags, endorsements, permits, or certifications are separate from the lifetime license.
- For a Walmart purchase, whether that specific store provides the license service you need.
