Life at Canonical: Freyja Cooper’s perspective as a new joiner in Communications

Freyja Cooper’s first-year account presents Canonical as a remote, globally distributed workplace where a Communications Content Specialist can take ownership early, influence product messaging and work across technical subjects such as Data and AI. It also describes an intense start, many calls and a steep learning curve. The account comes from Canonical’s own employee-spotlight series, so it is useful first-person evidence—not an independent review of pay, management or the experience of every employee.

What this Canonical employee spotlight covers

Canonical published “Life at Canonical: Freyja Cooper’s perspective as a new joiner in Communications” on November 7, 2024. Amir Abdel Baki wrote the piece for Canonical’s “Life at Canonical” series, which interviews employees who joined within the previous year. Cooper had joined the company in November 2023.

Because Canonical publishes the interview as career and culture content, its positive assessments should be read as Cooper’s experience and the company’s presentation of that experience. The article does not establish current policy in 2026 or represent a workforce-wide survey.

Who Freyja Cooper is and what she does

Cooper joined Canonical’s Communications Team as a Content Specialist after spending a long period working as a freelancer. She describes her work as writing content that amplifies Canonical’s mission and explains the value of its products to customers and end users. She also helps colleagues improve their writing and supports content-quality standards.

Her remit extends beyond producing copy. In her account, the role includes deciding which subjects and messages deserve development, translating product value into customer-relevant language and helping shape content strategy. Her main portfolio area was Data and AI, giving her exposure to a fast-moving technical part of Canonical’s business.

Area What Cooper’s account indicates
Content production Writing and delivering communications content.
Content strategy Helping determine topics and messages Canonical should develop.
Product messaging Explaining product benefits for customers and users.
Editorial enablement Helping colleagues write more effectively and maintaining standards.
Portfolio Primarily Data and AI.

This is a high-level account, not a complete job description. It does not specify her tools, reporting line, key performance indicators, salary, deliverables or typical weekly workload.

What joining Canonical was like

Cooper characterizes her first few months as intense and full of learning. She encountered many new people and meetings, with more calls than she was used to. That detail matters for applicants: remote work did not mean low-contact work. Distributed collaboration required frequent, deliberate communication.

At the same time, she says she could take ownership of projects quickly and make a meaningful contribution early. She valued working with talented colleagues and having influence over content decisions rather than simply executing a pre-set brief. The combination suggests an environment with substantial autonomy, but also a demand to learn quickly and make decisions without waiting for every instruction.

How Canonical’s induction sprint worked

Canonical’s article describes an onboarding plan for a globally distributed workforce. During their first few months, new joiners were invited to a three-day induction sprint, described as fully funded by Canonical and held in locations around the world.

What the three days included

  • Presentations from senior leaders.
  • Explanations of company functions and their strategic vision.
  • Networking with colleagues from other teams.
  • Team-building activities.
  • An introduction to Canonical’s open-source technologies.
  • Context on how the different parts of the business fit together.

Cooper found the sprint useful for understanding the organization and enjoyable because it brought together new joiners she would not normally meet. She also says meeting so many highly talented people could initially feel intimidating, although colleagues quickly seemed approachable and down to earth.

The funding and format above are what the 2024 article describes for the period of Cooper’s joining. Applicants should confirm whether the same arrangement, eligibility rules and travel coverage apply to a role offered today.

Company sprints and travel in her first year

By the interview, Cooper had attended her induction sprint plus four internal company sprints: one in Vancouver, two in Madrid and one in The Hague. The article says Canonical sponsored these events.

These were company sprints, not evidence of a standard travel schedule for every employee. Their frequency, location, invitation criteria and funding may differ by team, role and current policy.

Remote work through Cooper’s experience

Cooper says she had held only one office job, shortly after university, and had worked from home since then. She would not currently choose an office-based role. She values the comfort of her home environment, the time and money saved by avoiding commuting, and the suitability of that setting for her as a neurodivergent person.

That is a personal explanation rather than a general finding about neurodivergent workers or Canonical employees. It also sits alongside her description of a call-heavy onboarding period. A home-based role can remove commuting while still requiring intensive meetings, time-zone coordination and active participation in a distributed team.

What the role may require from applicants

Comfort with strategic, not merely editorial, work

Cooper’s description points to a communications job that combines writing with judgment about positioning, audiences and priorities. Someone seeking only assigned copy-production tasks may find the broader remit different from expectations.

Ability to learn technical subjects

Her Data-and-AI portfolio and Canonical’s open-source technology orientation indicate that communications staff need to absorb technical information and turn it into clear customer language. The article does not define the technical background required for every Communications vacancy.

Autonomy in a distributed organization

Early project ownership was one of Cooper’s positives. Applicants should consider whether they are comfortable progressing work, seeking context and coordinating stakeholders without being in the same office as their colleagues.

Persistence through an intense start

Cooper advises candidates to be passionate about their field and about learning, willing to see problems from new perspectives, prepared to solve difficult problems and ready to move outside their comfort zone.

Potential advantages and trade-offs

Potential advantage Related trade-off or question
Home-based work and no commute Remote collaboration may involve a high meeting load and careful coordination.
Early ownership of projects Autonomy can bring pressure when a new hire is still learning systems and products.
Influence over content strategy Strategic input requires product knowledge, judgment and stakeholder management.
Exposure to Data and AI Fast-moving technical subjects can create a substantial learning curve.
International sprints and networking Travel can be valuable but may not suit every employee or occur at the same frequency for every role.
Access to experienced colleagues A large, highly skilled global organization can initially feel intimidating and information-heavy.

Questions to ask Canonical before applying or accepting

  • How often are company sprints held now, and which Communications employees attend?
  • Are travel, accommodation and other sprint costs still fully funded for the relevant role?
  • What is a typical meeting load, and how is time-zone coverage handled?
  • How are writing quality, content impact and product-messaging success measured?
  • How much autonomy does a new Content Specialist receive during the first months?
  • What accessibility, accommodation and neurodiversity support is available?
  • What progression routes exist within Communications?

What this interview does not establish

The spotlight does not provide compensation or detailed benefits, current vacancies, team structures, promotion timelines, workload or retention data, independent employee sentiment, or a complete account of accessibility processes. It also does not prove that every Canonical role is fully remote, that every new hire receives identical onboarding, or that all employees receive the same travel opportunities.

For current openings and present-day career information, consult Canonical’s careers page and verify role-specific policies during the hiring process. The 2024 interview should not be used alone to describe Canonical’s policies or culture as of 2026.
