These Black Friday 2019 VPN deals have expired. A November 28, 2019 article reported promotions for ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Surfshark, but did not document checkout receipts or full billing terms. Treat the prices below as historical advertised offers—not prices available today or verified totals you could have paid.
What the 2019 article reported
The comparison below preserves the offers as described in the original article. Its report is evidence of what that article advertised, not independent confirmation of the providers’ checkout pages or terms.
| Provider | Reported offer | Reported price | Refund period reported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | 12-month subscription plus 3 additional months; described as for new users | No price stated in the article | 30 days | The original article’s editorial pick; not a documented price comparison |
| NordVPN | 3-year plan plus 3 additional months | $3.49 per month equivalent; approximately 83% off claimed | Not stated | The total prepaid charge and discount baseline were not disclosed |
| Surfshark | 24-month plan plus 3 additional months | $1.99 per month equivalent | Not stated | The total prepaid charge and renewal terms were not disclosed |
Source for all three offers and the claims in this table: TheTechHacker’s November 28, 2019 article.
The article did not establish the exact promotion end date or time zone, country availability, taxes, currency conversion, payment restrictions, whether existing customers qualified, coupon stacking, auto-renewal behavior, or the price charged at renewal. It also did not show whether the extra months extended the subscription term in the way a customer might expect. Those details are unverified, not terms to infer from the monthly-equivalent figures.

Which offer made sense for which buyer?
ExpressVPN: the source’s premium pick
The 2019 article selected ExpressVPN as its top recommendation and reported a 12-month subscription with three bonus months and a 30-day money-back guarantee. It described the service as relatively expensive while praising its speed and features. Those are the article’s judgments; it supplied no comparative speed measurements or documented testing to establish that ExpressVPN was faster or objectively best.
A shorter reported commitment than NordVPN’s three-year offer could suit someone reluctant to prepay for several years. But the original article did not state ExpressVPN’s promotional price, so it is not possible to compare its cost per month or total charge with the other two offers. The 30-day guarantee is reported by that article; it did not describe exclusions or establish whether the terms covered every purchase route.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
NordVPN: the longest reported commitment
The article listed a three-year plan at an equivalent $3.49 per month, plus three additional months, and claimed savings of about 83%. It also mentioned apps, router and gaming-console support, P2P use, and OpenVPN UDP and TCP. These are claims recorded by the article, not independently verified feature testing.
The monthly equivalent is not evidence of a month-to-month subscription. The article did not disclose the full amount due upfront, the comparison price behind the 83% figure, whether the free months were included in the calculation, or the post-promotion renewal charge. A long prepaid term is a poor fit if you have not checked whether the service works on your devices and networks or are unsure you will keep using it.

Surfshark: the lowest advertised equivalent
The article reported a 24-month plan at an equivalent $1.99 per month with three more months included. It also described a network with more than 50 locations and more than 800 “server locations,” along with apps for major platforms, DNS leak protection, and a no-logs policy. The article did not define those location counts or independently establish the privacy, security, or performance claims.
In particular, a no-logs statement is a policy claim, not proof that no information is collected or retained. The reported low equivalent price does not establish the total payment, renewal rate, device limits, or refund conditions.

What cannot be compared from the surviving offer details
For a sound financial comparison, a buyer needs the actual payment schedule—not just a price divided into a monthly-looking figure. The original article does not provide enough information to calculate a verified effective monthly cost for any of the three deals.
- Upfront charge: Not stated for these offers. Without it, the advertised equivalents cannot be converted into confirmed totals.
- Paid months and bonus months: The article lists the subscription term and three extra months, but does not show the checkout breakdown or explain how the bonus was applied.
- Renewal: No renewal amount, renewal interval, or auto-renewal terms are given.
- Refund: Only ExpressVPN’s 30-day guarantee is mentioned. The source does not document exclusions or report a guarantee for NordVPN or Surfshark.
- Availability and taxes: Country, currency, tax treatment, eligible payment methods, and offer expiration details are not established.
For any subscription, the useful calculation is total amount actually paid ÷ total months of access received. That result still needs to be considered alongside the next renewal charge and the possibility that you cancel before using the full term. Because the 2019 article gives no total charges or renewal prices, supplying a numerical effective cost would require guessing.

How to judge a VPN promotion before paying
These checks matter more than a large discount percentage. A low introductory rate can still be poor value if the commitment is too long, the renewal is costly, or the service does not meet your needs.
- Confirm the checkout total and currency. Check the amount charged today, the term it covers, whether tax is added, and how any free months affect access. Do not treat an equivalent monthly rate as a monthly-billed price.
- Read the renewal and cancellation terms. Note when the introductory period ends, what it renews for, how often it renews, and how to stop future billing. Confirm whether cancellation ends renewal only or affects the remaining paid access.
- Read the guarantee for the purchase route you use. Check the deadline, eligible payment methods, app-store or reseller exclusions, and whether renewals or prior refunds are treated differently. A headline refund period alone does not settle eligibility.
- Check product fit and device limits. Confirm compatibility with your operating systems, router, or other devices; simultaneous-connection limits; protocol options; and whether features such as a kill switch and leak protection are available in the apps you will use.
- Assess privacy evidence, not slogans. Read the privacy policy and relevant technical disclosures. Look for independent audit information and what it covers; distinguish connection data from account, payment, diagnostic, or support data.
- Treat streaming and P2P as conditional uses. Streaming access can change with country, service, server, and date. P2P availability can depend on provider rules, server, and local law. Neither should be assumed from a broad promotional claim.
What a VPN does—and does not—protect
A VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN service, which can help protect traffic on an insecure network. It also shifts trust: instead of relying only on the local network or internet provider, you are relying on the VPN provider and its apps, systems, and policies. The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to examine VPN apps’ permissions, encryption, and data-sharing practices rather than assume an app is safe because it is called a VPN. See the FTC’s VPN app guidance and its discussion of the VPN app market.
- A VPN does not make you completely anonymous. Websites may still recognize you when you sign in, use cookies, or expose identifying browser characteristics.
- It does not stop malware or replace antivirus protections, and it cannot prevent phishing if you choose to enter information on a deceptive site.
- It does not guarantee access to a streaming service; providers can detect and block VPN connections.
- A VPN provider may handle connection or account information depending on its technology, operations, and legal obligations. A “no logs” label alone does not prove zero data retention.
