Neither Lidl nor Aldi is automatically the cheaper or better choice for every shopper. The right pick depends on the stores near you, what your household regularly buys, local prices and promotions, and whether a trip to one store saves enough to justify any extra stops. Compare your own regular basket rather than relying on a universal ranking.
First, compare the stores in your country
Lidl and Aldi do not operate as one identical format worldwide. Their store ranges, prices, loyalty programs and services can differ by market, and local availability matters more than international reputation. ALDI’s international site routes shoppers to country-specific pages and identifies Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd for Germany. Lidl also separates its national operations; its international page reports roughly 13,000 stores in 32 countries and €140.2 billion in store revenue for fiscal year 2025. Those company-reported figures describe Lidl’s scale, not a comparison with Aldi or a guide to your local store.
For a useful comparison, start with the specific Lidl and Aldi locations you can actually shop at. Do not assume a feature, product or price reported in one country applies elsewhere.
How to compare prices fairly
The available information does not establish that Lidl or Aldi is consistently cheaper on a current, comparable grocery basket. A single advertised deal—or a comparison from another shopper’s city—cannot settle the question for your household. Use a short, repeatable basket of items you buy regularly and record what you would pay at the nearby stores.

- Record the local price and date. Prices and offers can change. Note which branch you checked and whether a price is a temporary promotion.
- Separate ordinary and conditional prices. Mark any price that requires an app, account or other offer condition rather than treating it as the standard shelf price.
- Compare the total and repeat when useful. A basket checked once is a snapshot, not a general verdict. Recheck it if your shopping pattern or local offers change.
For a personal-finance decision, compare the amount you would actually spend—not the size of a headline discount. A deal only counts as a saving if it applies to something you planned to buy.
Which store has the selection you need?
Selection is a matter of fit, not just the number of products on a shelf. Make a list of the specific staples, dietary products and brands your household depends on, then check whether each nearby store reliably carries them. If a missing item means a second stop, include that time and travel in the decision.

Lidl’s US offer
Lidl US describes its range as curated and says it includes local produce, fresh meat and seafood, imported cheeses and specialties, European pastries, and rotating non-food items such as clothing and cookware. These are Lidl’s descriptions of its US offer, not an independent comparison with Aldi or a guarantee that every location has the same items. See Lidl US’s About Us page for its account of the range.
What the UK regulator has said
In a UK provisional finding, the Competition and Markets Authority said Aldi, Lidl GB and Lidl NI should be covered by grocery land-agreement rules, citing their store scale and geographic coverage, full grocery range and procurement model. It also said they may offer less choice within some categories than some existing large grocers. This was a provisional proposal about the scope of UK rules—not a final decision, a price test or a universal assessment of Lidl and Aldi. The CMA announcement said no final decision had been made at the time.

Count rewards only when you will use them
Rewards can affect the cost of a planned shop, but program rules depend on the market and offers can change. In the US, Lidl says Lidl Plus became available to download on July 1, 2026, with exclusive offers beginning July 15, 2026. Its Lidl Plus FAQ describes a free program with points, member-exclusive offers, personalized coupons, digital receipts and weekly ads; it also says shoppers can shop without an account or app. These details are US-specific and should not be assumed to apply in other countries.
Before counting an offer as a saving, check its terms and whether it applies to items you intended to buy. If using the program would prompt an unplanned purchase, or if you do not want to use an app or account, compare the ordinary prices instead.

Include the cost of convenience
A small difference in basket totals may not make a second trip worthwhile. Compare the practical costs that matter to your routine:
- How far each store is from home, work or your regular route.
- Whether its opening hours fit your schedule.
- Whether you can get your preferred staples and dietary products in one stop.
- How much extra time and travel a second shop would require.
- Whether an advertised offer requires a separate visit or app check.
There is no location-specific price, opening-hours or availability comparison here, so treat these as checks for your own nearby stores rather than a ranking of the chains.

A quick decision checklist
- Compare the nearby branches, not the brands in the abstract.
- Use a dated basket of your household’s usual items and equivalent quantities.
- Separate standard prices from temporary or member-only offers.
- Check availability of the products you cannot easily substitute.
- Count rewards only when they reduce the cost of purchases you already planned.
- Include travel time and any second stop when comparing the real cost of a shop.
If one store works better for your routine basket and location, it is the better fit for you—even if a different branch or week produces a different result.
