Verdict: Libertex is a genuine online trading brand, not inherently a scam. It has operated for years through regulated entities, including Indication Investments Ltd, which is authorised by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC). However, Libertex is primarily a CFD and leveraged-trading platform. That makes it unsuitable for many long-term investors, and scammers can still impersonate the brand through fake websites, adverts and social-media accounts.

The important question is not only “Is Libertex legitimate?” but also which Libertex legal entity you are opening an account with, what protection applies in your country, and whether you understand CFDs. Most retail CFD accounts lose money, and no regulatory authorisation protects you from losses caused by leverage or poor trading decisions.

What is Libertex?

Libertex is a trading brand offering contracts for difference (CFDs) on markets such as shares, indices, commodities, currencies and cryptocurrencies. Depending on the account and jurisdiction, it may also offer investment products or access to other services, but its core proposition is leveraged trading rather than a conventional stocks-and-shares investment platform.

A CFD tracks the price of an underlying asset. You do not normally own the share, cryptocurrency, gold or index shown in the position. Instead, you speculate on whether its price will rise or fall. You can open a long position when you expect a rise or a short position when you expect a fall.

That distinction matters. Someone looking for a low-cost ISA, a pension provider or a platform for buying and holding real shares should not assume that a Libertex CFD account provides the same service.

Is Libertex regulated?

Libertex’s principal European operator has traditionally been Indication Investments Ltd, a Cyprus investment firm authorised by CySEC under licence number 164/12. The company and licence should be checked directly on the CySEC register before opening an account.

Regulation is entity-specific. A website using the Libertex name may direct customers to a different company depending on their country of residence. The legal entity, regulator, licence number and compensation scheme shown in the account-opening documents are more important than the Libertex logo.

For a UK customer, do not assume that a Cyprus-regulated account has the same protections as an account with a UK-authorised investment firm. Check the FCA’s Financial Services Register at register.fca.org.uk and confirm:

  • the exact company name;
  • the firm’s permission to provide the service being advertised;
  • the website domain and contact details recorded for that firm;
  • whether the firm is authorised or merely an appointed representative; and
  • which client-money and compensation arrangements apply.

A regulatory listing lowers the risk of dealing with an outright fictitious broker. It does not mean Libertex guarantees profits, that every product is suitable, or that losses will be reimbursed.

Why do people search for “Libertex scam”?

There are several legitimate reasons for concern that do not necessarily prove fraud:

Rank #2
  • CFD losses: leverage can produce rapid losses, including losses from normal market movements.
  • Fees that are not obvious at first: spreads, commissions, overnight financing and currency conversion can materially affect results.
  • Withdrawal checks: identity, source-of-funds and anti-money-laundering checks can delay withdrawals.
  • Marketing affiliates: third-party websites may make exaggerated claims that Libertex itself did not make.
  • Impersonation: criminals can copy the name, branding and regulatory details of a genuine broker.

There is also a difference between a complaint about a failed trade or an account restriction and evidence that the broker is a fake operation. Those issues should be investigated separately.

How to spot a fake Libertex website or contact

  1. Start at the official Libertex website by typing the address into your browser rather than clicking an unsolicited advert or message.
  2. Read the footer and account-opening documents to identify the legal company. A brand name alone is not enough.
  3. Search the relevant regulator’s register independently. Do not use a link or telephone number supplied by a person who contacted you.
  4. Compare the domain, email address and telephone details with those shown on the regulator’s record and the broker’s official website.
  5. Refuse requests to send money to a personal bank account, cryptocurrency wallet or unrelated payment service.
  6. Ignore anyone promising guaranteed returns, “inside information”, a fixed monthly income or recovery of money lost with another broker.

Legitimate brokers may ask for identification and proof of address. They should not ask for your password, one-time passcode or remote access to your computer. Treat WhatsApp investment pitches, pressure to deposit immediately and requests to pay a tax or release fee before a withdrawal as major warning signs.

What can you trade?

The exact instrument list changes by country and account type, but Libertex has generally offered CFDs linked to:

  • major and minor currency pairs;
  • company shares;
  • stock-market indices;
  • commodities such as oil, gas and precious metals;
  • cryptocurrencies; and
  • other market benchmarks or exchange-traded products.

Availability is not the same as ownership. Buying a “Tesla CFD”, for example, normally gives you exposure to Tesla’s price movement rather than Tesla shares, voting rights or a conventional shareholding. Corporate actions, dividends and adjustments are handled under the broker’s CFD terms.

Leverage is the central risk

Leverage lets you control a larger position with a smaller deposit. If £1,000 of margin controls a £5,000 position, a 2% adverse move represents a £100 loss before costs—10% of the margin used. A larger move can consume the margin quickly.

Retail clients in the UK and European Union are generally subject to leverage limits, margin close-out rules and negative-balance protections for eligible CFD accounts. Those safeguards are valuable but limited. They do not stop an account from losing most of its deposit, and they may not apply if you trade through a professional account or an offshore entity.

Before trading, find the broker’s risk warning and record the stated percentage of retail accounts that lose money. The percentage changes over time and should be read on the current Libertex website, not copied from an old review.

Fees to check before depositing

Libertex’s cost structure can include more than the headline spread. Check the live terms for your jurisdiction and instrument, particularly the following:

Cost What to check
Spread The difference between the buy and sell price. It may widen during volatile or illiquid markets.
Commission Some instruments may use a separate opening or closing commission rather than relying only on the spread.
Overnight financing A position held after the daily cut-off can incur a financing adjustment. This can make long-term CFD holding expensive.
Currency conversion Deposits, withdrawals, account balances and trades in another currency may involve conversion costs.
Inactivity or administration charges Check whether an inactive account or a dormant balance attracts a charge.
Withdrawal terms Confirm minimum amounts, supported methods, processing times and any applicable fees.

Do not judge the platform by a “zero commission” claim without checking the spread and financing rate. A trade can be commission-free and still be costly.

Deposits and withdrawals

Use a payment method in your own name and keep records of deposits, trade confirmations and withdrawal requests. Brokers commonly return funds only to a verified account or to the original payment method, subject to anti-money-laundering rules.

Normal compliance checks are not automatically evidence of a scam. However, an unexplained demand for a large extra payment before releasing your balance is a different matter. Contact the broker through the independently verified support channel and do not pay a supposed “tax”, “insurance fee” or “liquidity charge” to a stranger.

If a withdrawal is delayed, ask for the reason in writing and request the relevant term from the client agreement. Escalate through the firm’s formal complaints procedure, then to the appropriate ombudsman or regulator if the entity and jurisdiction provide that route.

What protection applies?

Protection depends on the legal entity and the product. For a Cyprus-regulated investment firm, eligible clients may fall within the Investor Compensation Fund (ICF), subject to its rules and limits. That is not the same as insurance against a losing trade.

Compensation schemes generally address a firm’s failure to return eligible client money or assets. They do not cover:

  • a CFD losing value;
  • a stop-loss executing at a worse price during a market gap;
  • an incorrect market prediction;
  • losses caused by excessive leverage; or
  • money sent to an unauthorised clone or unrelated individual.

Client-money segregation is designed to keep client funds separate from the broker’s operating money. It is an important control, but it cannot eliminate every risk of shortfall, fraud or operational failure.

Platform and execution issues

Online trading platforms can be convenient, but execution is not guaranteed at the price displayed on screen. During major economic announcements or sharp price movements:

  • quotes can change before an order is filled;
  • spreads can widen;
  • stop orders can execute at a worse price than the trigger;
  • markets can become temporarily unavailable; and
  • margin requirements can change under the broker’s terms.

Read how Libertex handles slippage, stop-outs, rejected orders and platform outages. Test the demo account, but remember that demo execution may not reproduce live liquidity, spreads or emotional pressure.

Who should avoid Libertex?

Libertex is a poor fit if your goal is to build a diversified portfolio for retirement, invest through a UK ISA or hold real shares for many years. A conventional investment platform or low-cost fund provider is usually more appropriate for that purpose.

It may be considered by an experienced trader who understands margin, position sizing, financing and tax treatment, and who has independently verified the applicable entity. Even then, only risk money that you can afford to lose completely.

What to do if you think you have been scammed

  1. Stop sending money and do not pay a recovery agent.
  2. Save screenshots, emails, telephone numbers, wallet addresses, bank details and transaction references.
  3. Contact your bank or card provider immediately and ask whether the payment can be recalled or disputed.
  4. Change passwords and enable two-factor authentication, especially if you shared login details or installed remote-access software.
  5. Report the incident to Action Fraud in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or the relevant police and fraud-reporting service where you live.
  6. Report the suspected clone to the relevant financial regulator and contact the genuine broker through its official website.

FAQ

Is Libertex a scam?

The genuine Libertex trading brand is not automatically a scam and operates through regulated entities, including a Cyprus-regulated company. Nevertheless, CFDs are high-risk products, and fake Libertex websites or agents can be fraudulent. Verify the exact legal entity and domain before depositing.

Is Libertex regulated in the UK?

Do not assume that every Libertex account is UK-regulated. Check the FCA Financial Services Register and your account documents to see which entity will hold your account. A Cyprus-regulated account has different rules and compensation arrangements from a UK-authorised account.

Can I buy real shares through Libertex?

Many Libertex products are share CFDs, not direct shareholdings. Confirm the product description before trading. A CFD normally gives price exposure without ownership, voting rights or the same long-term investor characteristics as a real share.

Can I lose more than I deposit?

Eligible UK and EU retail CFD accounts generally have negative-balance protections, but the rules depend on the entity and account classification. Professional or offshore accounts may not have the same protection. Never rely on protection instead of controlling leverage.

Does Libertex guarantee withdrawals?

No broker can guarantee that every withdrawal will be immediate. Identity and anti-money-laundering checks can cause delays. A demand to pay an unrelated upfront fee before receiving your money is a strong scam warning.

What is the safest way to check a Libertex contact?

Find the official website independently, identify the contracting company, and match its name, licence, website and telephone details against the relevant regulator’s register. Do not trust a logo, a supplied licence number, a social-media profile or an unsolicited WhatsApp message.

The Bottom Line

Libertex is a legitimate trading brand rather than an outright scam, but “legitimate” does not mean low-risk or suitable for every investor. The real danger is usually the product: leveraged CFDs can lose money quickly, while spreads, financing and currency costs can erode a position. Verify the exact Libertex entity, check the regulator and compensation scheme, and avoid any unsolicited contact claiming to represent the broker. If your aim is long-term investing in real assets, look beyond a CFD platform.
