LG.Philips LCD broke ground on June 14, 2006, on a planned LCD module plant in Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw in southwestern Poland. The company announced an investment of EUR 429 million and planned annual capacity of 3 million modules initially, rising to 11 million by 2011.
Where was the plant, and when did construction begin?
The site was in Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw, in southwestern Poland. The groundbreaking took place on June 14, 2006, following an investment agreement signed on September 9, 2005, with the Polish government and Wroclaw municipality. LG.Philips LCD described the project as its first European base for back-end LCD module production.
How much was the investment, and what capacity was planned?
LG.Philips LCD announced a EUR 429 million investment in 2005. Its plan called for an initial output of 3 million modules per year, with design capacity targeted to reach 11 million units annually by 2011. These were announced investment and capacity targets, not figures establishing the plant’s eventual expenditure or realized output.
When did production start, and what did the plant make?
In its June 2006 groundbreaking announcement, the company said production was expected in March 2007, refining its earlier guidance of the first half of 2007. LG.Philips LCD later reported that full-scale mass production began on March 30, 2007. The plant made LCD modules mainly for televisions with screens of 32 inches and larger, and was planned to expand from 3 million to 11 million units annually.

Why did LG.Philips build the plant in Poland?
The company’s plan kept technology-intensive front-end TFT-LCD panel production in Korea while locating back-end module production and assembly closer to European customers. LG.Philips said this arrangement would reduce distribution costs, enable more timely supply and provide faster technical support as the European LCD-TV market grew.
What role did Toshiba have?
LG.Philips LCD’s 2006 annual-report filing records Toshiba’s reported 19.9% equity participation in the Polish subsidiary. Under the alliance, LG.Philips LCD Poland was to supply Toshiba with LCD-TV panels made at the plant.
