LEONI acquired all shares of Swiss cable maker Studer Draht- und Kabelwerk AG on 31 July 2006. LEONI’s annual report later recorded an acquisition cost of €104.3 million, including transaction costs; contemporary coverage described the agreed price as €105 million. Studer brought specialist cable technology, established customers and a stronger foothold in Switzerland.
When did LEONI acquire Studer?
LEONI agreed to buy Studer on 31 May 2006, subject to antitrust approval. The acquisition took effect on 31 July 2006, when LEONI acquired all shares in Studer Draht- und Kabelwerk AG, based in Däniken, Switzerland, and began fully consolidating the business. LEONI’s 2007 annual report, covering fiscal 2006, records the completed acquisition.
How much did LEONI pay?
The figures reported at announcement and after completion are compatible, not competing accounts of the price.

The difference reflects how the figures were reported: the contemporary announcement gave a rounded agreed price, while the annual report stated the acquisition cost with transaction costs included.

What did Studer make?
Studer manufactured halogen-free standard cables and special cables designed to resist flame and high temperatures. Its products served infrastructure and industrial applications where cable performance under demanding conditions mattered.

Why was Studer strategically important to LEONI?
The deal added specialist cabling expertise and gave LEONI access to Studer’s sales network and stronger positioning in Switzerland. The strategic rationale was not just geographic: Studer’s flame-retardant and temperature-resistant products expanded LEONI’s capabilities in high-grade special cabling systems.

LEONI CEO Klaus Probst said the acquisition would strengthen the company in the Swiss market and improve its position in high-grade special cabling systems by adding the technological skills of an innovative enterprise. Contemporary reporting put Studer’s 2005 sales at €84 million and its workforce at 350 employees, offering a sense of the business LEONI was acquiring at the time. These are historical figures, not current operating data.

LEONI later sold the business. On 30 March 2021, a consortium led by Bruno Fankhauser and Helvetica Capital returned it to Swiss ownership, and the company began operating as Studer Cables AG. The 2021 ownership change is distinct from the 2006 acquisition: it marks the point at which the business left LEONI and resumed operating as a Swiss-owned company.
