Who was Leonard Lauder?
Lauder was the oldest son of Estée and Joseph H. Lauder, who founded the company that bears the Estée Lauder name. Born in New York City in 1933, he attended Bronx High School of Science and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and studied at Columbia’s Graduate School of Business. He also served as a U.S. Navy lieutenant and reservist, according to the company’s biographical account.
What was his role at The Estée Lauder Companies?
Lauder joined the family business in 1958. The Associated Press reports that he served as president from 1972 to 1995, CEO from 1982 to 1999, and chairman from 1995 through June 2009. He was chairman emeritus—not CEO—when he died. The company said he remained closely involved in its operations.

The AP’s account of the company’s history credits Lauder with helping expand the business internationally and develop its portfolio. It describes his role in launching or growing brands including Aramis, Clinique and Lab Series, and in later acquisitions including Aveda, Bobbi Brown, Jo Malone London and MAC.

Education and international studies
Lauder and his brother Ronald founded the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania in 1983 in honor of their father, Joseph H. Lauder. The institute combines international studies and business education, according to its account of its founding.

Arts and philanthropy
The company’s board described Lauder as a philanthropist and advocate for the arts, education and medical research. The AP reports that he supported the Metropolitan Museum of Art, pledged a 78-piece Cubist collection to the museum in 2013, and had a longstanding connection to the Whitney Museum of American Art. The Metropolitan Museum’s Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art also bears his name.
His son William P. Lauder, chair of The Estée Lauder Companies’ board, remembered him in comments reported by the AP: “Above all, my father was a man who practiced kindness with everyone he met.”
