On April 16, 2014, Lenovo announced a consumer-PC lineup that included two FLEX 2 convertible laptops, an A540 all-in-one desktop and several other laptop families. The tax-refund angle in the headline was seasonal marketing after the U.S. tax-filing deadline—not evidence that consumers generally spend refunds on computers.
What Lenovo announced in April 2014
The announcement paired the FLEX 2, a laptop that could rotate into a stand position, with products aimed at different household and business needs. Lenovo also made a separate same-day announcement covering the A540 all-in-one and the B50, G50, Z40 and Z50 laptop lines.

What made the FLEX 2 different
The FLEX 2’s hinge rotated 300 degrees, letting the screen fold behind the keyboard into what Lenovo called Stand mode. It supported laptop and stand positions; Lenovo did not describe it as a 360-degree hinge that turns the computer into a tablet.

Lenovo announced 14-inch and 15.6-inch versions. Both were described as having multitouch displays, with optional full-HD screens and discrete graphics on some configurations. Lenovo also cited Intel and AMD processor choices, storage options up to a 1 TB hard drive or hybrid SSHD and up to a 256 GB SSD, and an optional backlit keyboard. Those options were not necessarily present together in every configuration.

FLEX 2 14 vs. 15.6: launch prices and availability
| Version | Lenovo’s announced U.S. starting price | Planned availability |
|---|---|---|
| 14-inch FLEX 2 | $799 | Beginning June 2014 |
| 15.6-inch FLEX 2 | $429 | Beginning June 2014 |
These were Lenovo’s announced starting prices and expected availability in 2014, not current prices, offers or evidence of what a particular configuration ultimately sold for. The lower starting price for the larger model does not establish that otherwise comparable 15.6-inch systems were less expensive; the figures are entry prices for product families, not a like-for-like comparison.
Why the FLEX 2 name does not identify one specification
Lenovo’s archived 14-inch specification sheet shows how widely configurations could differ. For that 14-inch platform, processor choices ranged from Celeron and Pentium to fourth-generation Core i3, i5 and i7. Display options included 1366 × 768 HD and 1920 × 1080 FHD multitouch; select configurations used NVIDIA GeForce 820M or 840M graphics. HDD, SSHD and SSD storage options were listed, while memory and battery capacity depended on the model. These sheet details apply to the 14-inch platform and should not be assumed for every 15.6-inch model.

For two specific FLEX 2 listings, compare the configuration and the condition rather than relying on the family name:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Screen size and resolution
- Processor and graphics hardware
- Installed memory and whether it can be upgraded
- Storage type and capacity
- Battery condition and capacity, plus whether a charger is included
- Device condition, seller and return terms
Because FLEX 2 is a 2014 product family, a listing should identify the exact model and clearly state whether it is used, refurbished or new. Check the individual listing for its specifications; the family name alone does not establish its configuration or condition.

What the tax-refund headline does—and does not—mean
The April 16, 2014 story framed Lenovo’s lineup around consumers potentially spending a tax refund just after the U.S. filing deadline. That is a promotional hook, not a finding about how people use refunds: no broader statistic about tax-refund spending on computers is established here.
Lenovo vice president of worldwide marketing and design Dilip Bhatia described the FLEX 2 as “two great devices – a full-function, multitouch laptop and a second, Stand mode – in one machine all at an extremely affordable price.” That was Lenovo’s product positioning, not an independent assessment of affordability.
