These are 2024 announcements, not confirmation that each initiative has since launched.
What does Leland do?
Leland is a marketplace that connects people pursuing goals such as university admission, entrance exams and product management with coaches. Its offering also included courses and events, according to TechCrunch’s November 13, 2024 report.
The scale figures published at the time differ by source and wording. TechCrunch reported that Leland said more than 100,000 users across 70 countries had accessed coaching, courses and events, and that the platform had more than 1,000 coaches. Forerunner Ventures’ November 2024 investment post described Leland as serving more than 100,000 consumers in 70-plus countries and 50-plus categories. Leland’s announcement said its coaches had helped hundreds of thousands of people in over 70 countries during the prior year. These are company or investor claims, not independently audited counts.
Who invested in Leland?
Forerunner Ventures led the $12 million Series A, with GSV Ventures participating, according to TechCrunch. Leland’s announcement gave a fuller list: GSV and inVest Ventures joined existing investors FJ Labs, Contrary, Peterson Ventures and GSBackers. It also said dozens of coaches and customers, marketplace founders, operators and angel investors participated.

TechCrunch reported that the round brought Leland’s total raised to $17.1 million as of November 13, 2024. That is a dated total, not a current funding figure.
Why raise money if Leland was cash-flow positive?
CEO John Koelliker told TechCrunch that Leland did not need to raise and was cash-flow positive, but chose to seek capital because the business had reached an inflection point and wanted to invest in growth. Leland’s announcement likewise said the company was cash-flow positive going into the fundraise. Those statements describe the company’s own account of its finances; the sources do not provide audited financial statements.

TechCrunch reported that Leland had grown revenue fourfold in the year before the November 2024 report, without disclosing an absolute revenue figure. Koelliker also said, “We still have 75% organic growth because there is so much sharing within friends, family, and users’ networks.” The article does not define how that organic-growth share was calculated, so it should be read as his attributed description rather than a standardized metric.

What did the investors see in the marketplace?
Forerunner framed Leland’s opportunity around personalized help for concrete education and career outcomes. Its investment perspective pointed to coach profiles and reviews, choice among coaches and price points, and potential network effects as marketplace advantages. Those are the lead investor’s reasons for backing the company, not independent proof of coaching outcomes or marketplace performance.

Forerunner partner Eurie Kim wrote that “By accepting only ~5% of the coaches that apply to be on the platform, Leland is becoming the most trusted source for top-quality professional development coaches.” Leland also reported a 5% coach applicant acceptance rate. The selectivity figure is attributable to the company; “most trusted” is the investor’s characterization, not an independently established ranking.
In TechCrunch’s account, Kim also said, “We’re seeing younger generations deeply struggle to find purpose and direction in young adulthood, all while the job market becomes increasingly competitive and higher ed all the more expensive.” She described coach-facing tools as a way for coaches to run their businesses, saying, “Coaches benefit from advanced tools for running their business: built-in marketing, simplified back-end processing, and AI features for scale and efficiency.”
How did Leland fit into the coaching market?
TechCrunch’s November 2024 coverage placed Leland among services addressing different coaching needs: BetterUp for executive coaching, Intro for access to high-profile experts for builders and founders, AceUp for workplace coaching, Shimmer for people with ADHD, and HumanQ for group coaching. This is a contemporaneous sample of adjacent companies, not a complete market map or a like-for-like comparison. The sources do not provide comparable prices or outcome data, so they do not support ranking these services against one another.
How to read Leland’s reported numbers and dates
Leland’s announcement page currently displays a June 13, 2025 posting date, while TechCrunch and Forerunner published their accounts on November 13, 2024. The round is therefore reported here as a November 13, 2024 announcement, based on those contemporaneous accounts; the reason for the company page’s later displayed date is not established.
Other figures from the period are similarly time-bound. TechCrunch reported more than 50,000 coaching sessions in the 12 months before its November 2024 article, more than 1,000 coaches, and the fourfold revenue growth cited above. Leland’s announcement page states more than 10,000 reviews with a 4.98-star average and coverage in over 70 countries, but the page’s displayed date is June 13, 2025; those remain company-reported figures rather than independent verification. None should be treated as current without newer evidence.
