No. Lei Jun remains Xiaomi’s founder, chairman and chief executive officer. The headline came from a January 29, 2022 article about apparent changes to smartphone and product-release responsibilities—not evidence that Xiaomi replaced him or that he resigned.
What the original headline was—and was not—saying
The questioned story was published on January 29, 2022, in an article titled “Lei Jun is no longer the head of Xiaomi: What’s happening?” (Gizchina). Its discussion centered on Xiaomi’s phone and electronics organization, including the Xiaomi 12 series and how executive responsibility appeared in product materials.
“Head of Xiaomi” is ambiguous. It could mean the company’s CEO, the board chair, the person directing a product launch, or the executive running a particular business unit. The available article does not establish that Xiaomi formally removed Lei Jun as chairman or CEO. The best-supported reading is a narrower change in product-management responsibility or presentation, not a corporate leadership replacement.
Lei Jun’s verified position at Xiaomi
Xiaomi’s current board information and management page identify Lei Jun as founder, chairman, chief executive officer and executive director. Xiaomi’s 2025 annual report, filed in 2026, also lists him as CEO of the company’s smart electric-vehicle business (annual report PDF).

A Xiaomi filing dated March 24, 2026, likewise names Lei Jun chairman and executive director (Hong Kong Exchange filing). As of August 18, 2026, the company’s own records therefore contradict any interpretation that he has stopped leading Xiaomi at the corporate level.
Who runs Xiaomi’s smartphone business?
Operational leadership is distributed below the chairman and CEO. Xiaomi lists Lu Weibing as partner, president of the Group and president of the Smartphone Department. The 2025 annual report repeats those titles.

“President of the Smartphone Department” describes a business-unit mandate. It does not mean Lu Weibing is Xiaomi Corporation’s CEO or chairman. A divisional president can direct phone strategy, products and execution while the group’s CEO retains company-wide authority.

- Liu De: co-founder, executive director, senior vice president and head of the Leadership Management Department.
- Zeng Xuezhong: senior vice president and president of the International Business Department. Xiaomi’s biography says he led smartphone research and development and manufacturing from 2020 to 2024.
These assignments show specialization across a much larger company. They do not show that Lei Jun lost the chairmanship or CEO role.

Why the headline was easy to misread
Xiaomi has expanded beyond phones into electric vehicles, artificial intelligence and other businesses. That scale naturally requires senior executives to own particular departments, while Lei Jun’s public responsibilities span the group and its EV operation. The prominence of Lu Weibing and other divisional leaders, or the removal of Lei Jun’s name from a particular launch page, can therefore look like a succession story even when it is an operating-model change.

Those explanations are context, not proof of a specific 2022 demotion. No primary announcement in the available material says that Xiaomi stripped Lei Jun of corporate authority.
Chairman and CEO: one person at Xiaomi
Xiaomi’s annual-report governance discussion states that the chairman and CEO positions are held by the same person—Lei Jun. The board has previously said the combined arrangement supports consistent leadership and strategic planning, while indicating that it could review separation at an appropriate time (annual-report reproduction). A department president’s appointment is separate from that governance question.
