Who was the Ledger co-founder kidnapped in France?
The victim was David Balland, who co-founded Ledger in 2014, according to Le Monde. Early online rumors incorrectly named Eric Larchevêque, another Ledger co-founder. He was contacted by the abductors with a ransom demand; he was not the victim, Le Monde reported.
What happened to David Balland and his partner?
According to the Paris prosecutor’s account, the couple was abducted on January 21, 2025, in Vierzon and taken to separate locations. The abductors contacted another Ledger co-founder to demand ransom.
The prosecutor said the GIGN, France’s elite gendarmerie tactical unit, located and freed Balland. He was hospitalized after suffering a hand mutilation. His partner was later freed from a vehicle in Étampes. She had no physical injuries but was expected to receive care for trauma. The prosecutor’s statements were reported by France’s Interior Ministry.

Was cryptocurrency ransom paid?
Yes. The Paris prosecutor said part of the ransom was paid during negotiations managed by gendarmes. The prosecutor also said almost all of the cryptocurrency transferred was traced, frozen and seized. That describes the authorities’ account of the ransom recovery, not a claim that every transfer was recovered.
What did prosecutors allege?
The Paris prosecutor announced an intended judicial investigation into suspected organized kidnapping and confinement, torture or barbaric acts, and armed extortion. The prosecutor said the suspected offenses could carry life imprisonment. Those are allegations and potential penalties, not convictions or a finding that any named suspect was guilty.

Was a suspect arrested in Spain?
In March 2026, The Block reported that a suspect who had fled France was arrested in Andalusia, Spain. The report attributed to Spanish police the description of the man as the last member of the organization they had not yet arrested. That arrest report does not establish whether he was later extradited, tried, or convicted. The sources available do not establish the case’s final court outcome.

The crime involved violence against people, not a demonstrated failure of Ledger’s devices or a hack of its products. It should not be read as evidence that a particular wallet or security product would have prevented the kidnapping.

In a broader September 2026 feature, the French Gendarmerie discussed its response to cryptocurrency-linked kidnappings, including investigation, tactical intervention, physical and digital forensics, intelligence and blockchain tracing. That is general context, not evidence about the details or outcome of the Balland case. Colonel Patrick Pegeot, head of the National Judicial Police Unit’s Operations Division, described crypto possession as resembling “possessing a bank at home, but without any physical security.” He also said blockchain orders are generally immediate and irreversible, subject to specific configurations. These are his explanations, not universal guarantees about every asset or network.
Pegeot estimated that the GIGN deploys about 50 military personnel from its components in response to a kidnapping. This is his operational estimate, not a count of personnel involved in Balland’s rescue. In the same feature, he said: « La France dispose d’un réseau de petite et moyenne délinquance, souvent lié au trafic de stupéfiants, qui s’est adapté à ce nouveau « business », confie-t-il. »
