A job title is an employer’s label for a role—not a universal definition of the work. Titles can hint at a function, specialty, seniority, or scope, but the job description is the better guide to duties and responsibility. To understand a role, compare what the person does and the authority they have, then use an official occupational classification as a cross-check.
Job title and occupation are not the same thing
A job title is the wording an employer uses for a position or puts in a job advertisement. An occupation is a way of grouping jobs that involve sufficiently similar work. Different employers may use different titles for similar work, and people with the same title may do different work.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) puts the distinction plainly: “Under the SOC system, workers are classified into occupations based on their job duties, not their job titles.” The BLS also notes that workers with the same title may be classified in different occupations when their duties differ. BLS, “How do I find my SOC code?”
Canada’s National Occupational Classification (NOC) describes an occupation as a collection of jobs similar enough in the work performed to be grouped under a common label. Its unit groups include descriptions, main duties, employment requirements, and example job titles. The International Labour Organization’s ISCO-08 also classifies occupations by the kind of work performed, using groups with titles, codes, scope descriptions, and tasks. Useful dimensions of job titles
There is no universal official list of job-title types. The following dimensions are practical ways to interpret what a title may communicate; employers do not apply them consistently.
Function or specialty
Some titles name a field or kind of work, such as accountant, engineer, designer, analyst, or technician. The label suggests a broad area of expertise, but it does not establish the specific tasks, tools, or qualifications required.
Seniority or authority
Modifiers and ranks such as junior, associate, senior, lead, manager, director, and chief may signal experience, responsibility, or organizational rank. Their meanings vary by employer. A “manager” title, for example, does not by itself establish how many people the role supervises—or whether it supervises anyone.

Industry or setting

Words such as temporary, part-time, and contract may describe an employment arrangement rather than an occupation. Terms such as regional or global may indicate the reach of a role rather than its function. Do not infer legal status, pay, qualifications, or authority from these labels alone.
Australia’s myfuture career resource notes that job titles are not standardised and are chosen by individual employers; it also explains that different titles can identify the same occupation. myfuture, “What does a job title mean?”

How to compare two job titles
When titles look alike—or sound more or less senior—compare the listings rather than treating the wording as a reliable ranking. Occupational classification guidance also looks beyond labels: U.S. Department of Labor DOT guidance considers work actions, purpose, tools and equipment, materials, subject matter, services, and the nature and complexity of instructions. - Tasks and responsibilities: What work will the person actually perform?
- Scope and decisions: What does the role own, and what decisions can it make?
- Specialization: Which subject matter, tools, or expertise does the position require?
- Context: What industry, employer, team, or organizational setting shapes the work?
- Seniority and supervision: Does the listing specify leadership, oversight, or supervisory duties?
- Arrangement and location: Is the work temporary, part-time, contract, or tied to a particular place or area?
How to look up a title in an occupational classification
United States: SOC
The BLS explains how to find a Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code and emphasizes that duties determine classification. Its information desk does not make official determinations, so an SOC result should be treated as a classification reference—not a ruling for every employer or administrative purpose. BLS, “How do I find my SOC code?”

International comparisons: ISCO-08
The ILO’s ISCO-08 provides an international classification structure and index. For country-specific forms, statistics, or labor-market comparisons, a national classification may be the more appropriate reference. ILO, ISCO-08
What occupational title indexes can—and cannot—tell you
Classification references may organize titles in different ways. U.S. Department of Labor DOT guidance lists three arrangements: Occupational Group Arrangement, Alphabetical Index, and Industry Arrangement. These are ways to navigate occupational information, not a universal taxonomy of employer job titles. U.S. Department of Labor, occupational classification guidance
