What did Lazada’s 130 million figure measure?
TechCrunch reported that Alibaba presented the 130 million annual active consumer figure at its 2021 Investor Day. The count covered the 18 months ending September 2021, during which the number grew 80%. The report does not define the precise activity threshold for an “annual active consumer,” so it is safest to retain Alibaba’s metric label rather than assume it means a unique buyer in a particular 12-month window.
TechCrunch’s December 2021 report attributes the figure to Alibaba’s investor-day presentation. Alibaba’s Investor Day materials page lists Lazada presentation materials from that event.
How is that different from monthly active users?
TechCrunch also reported 159 million monthly active users as of September 2021. These are distinct measures: annual active consumers and monthly active users should not be compared as though they count the same behavior over the same period. A platform user may visit or use Lazada without making a purchase, which helps explain why a monthly user figure can exceed a consumer figure.

Alibaba’s fiscal year 2026 annual report describes Lazada as serving consumers with products from local small and medium-sized enterprises, regional brands, and global brands, supported by a regional logistics network. Lazada’s own company description says its marketplace spans 18 product categories and that LazMall connects shoppers with brands. These descriptions provide business context; they do not update the 2021 audience milestone.
