An LTP calculator uses the last traded price you enter—or a quote supplied by a connected market-data source—to calculate figures such as position value and price change. LTP means the price of the most recent completed trade; it is not necessarily the current price available to buy or sell, the day’s average, or the closing price. The examples below use India’s NSE conventions, which may differ from those of other exchanges.

What is LTP?

Last traded price (LTP) is the price at which a security most recently traded. In its cash-market feed specification, the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) defines LTP as the price of the last trade in a security. If no trade has occurred that day, the feed may use the previous day’s trade price or the base price instead. That means a displayed LTP can reflect an earlier session rather than a trade made today. Check the quote’s timestamp and session as well as its value. NSE Market Feed specification

LTP is a reported market-data field, not a value calculated from the day’s open, high, low, or trading volume. A calculator needs an LTP from a market-data source or an amount you provide; it cannot determine a live quote from those other figures.

What an LTP calculator can calculate

Once you have an LTP, a calculator can use it as an input for straightforward arithmetic. These results describe the figures entered; they do not predict future prices or establish what a trade will execute at.

Estimated position value

Formula: LTP × number of shares or units

For example, an input LTP of ₹250 multiplied by 20 shares gives an estimated gross value of ₹5,000. This is an illustrative calculation, not a live quote or a guaranteed sale or purchase amount. It excludes fees, taxes, slippage, and other transaction effects.

Absolute price change

Formula: LTP − comparison price

If you compare the LTP with a purchase price, the result is the change per share or unit. A positive result means the input LTP is above the comparison price; a negative result means it is below.

LTP versus average price, close, bid, and ask

These figures refer to different things. The NSE feed specification separates the last trade from average trade price and close; bid and ask are order-book quotes rather than completed trades.

Figure What it represents How to interpret it
LTP Price of the most recent trade recorded for the security. A completed trade price; check its timestamp and session because it may be old or carried forward when there has been no trade that day.
Average trade price NSE describes this as the weighted average of security value divided by quantity. An average across trades, not the price of the latest trade.
Close price A separate NSE feed field. During the trading day, the feed sends the previous day’s close; the current day’s close is calculated after market close. Do not treat the previous close shown during the session as that session’s final close.
Bid and ask Displayed buying and selling prices in the order book. They indicate available quotes, not a completed trade. The bid is the buying side; the ask is the selling side.

The definitions and close-price behavior in this table follow the NSE cash-market feed specification.

Why an LTP may not be the price you can trade at

Stale prices and low liquidity

A security that trades infrequently can have an old LTP. NSE notes that an illiquid stock’s last trade may have occurred an hour, a day, or even a week earlier, and that stale prices can affect index calculations. Before using LTP as a guide to an immediately available price, check when it was updated, whether the security has traded in the current session, and what the current bid and ask show. NSE FAQs about Indices

Bid-ask bounce

Successive trades can alternate between the bid and ask, making LTP appear to move even when no new information has arrived. NSE illustrates this with a bid of 1440 and an ask of 1490: a purchase at 1490 followed by a sale at 1440 produces an apparent ₹50 drop. This is one possible source of short-term price movement, not evidence that every move is noise. NSE’s bid-ask bounce explanation

Market orders and execution

A market order seeks the best price available when the order reaches the market; it does not guarantee execution at the displayed LTP. The order book and market conditions can change, and the available price may differ from the last completed trade. NSE Trading System

Stop-loss triggers

NSE describes a sell stop-loss order as triggering when LTP reaches or falls below its trigger price, and a buy stop-loss order as triggering when LTP reaches or exceeds its trigger. A trigger does not necessarily mean execution at that price: NSE’s example shows the released order entering as a limit order with a different limit price. Order behavior can depend on the broker and venue, so check their current rules before relying on a trigger. NSE Trading System

How to use an LTP figure responsibly

  • Identify the field. Confirm that the number is LTP, not average trade price, close, bid, or ask.
  • Check timestamp and session. A quote carried from a previous session may not reflect current trading.
  • Confirm the source and coverage. Check that it covers the relevant exchange and security.
  • Consider liquidity and the order book. A current bid and ask can provide context that an old last trade cannot.
  • Use the calculator only for the calculation. Its output depends on the input quote and does not guarantee a fill, forecast a price, or determine fair value.
