Whether you owe import charges on a laptop depends first on how it enters India. An eligible adult passenger can bring one new laptop duty-free in bona fide baggage under the Baggage Rules, 2026. A laptop sent by courier or post is treated differently: customs guidance describes a 30.98% charge under a specified personal-import classification, but that is not a guaranteed rate for every shipment.
Bringing a laptop in passenger baggage
Under India’s Baggage Rules, 2026, a passenger aged 18 or above, other than a crew member, may bring one new laptop, including a notepad, duty-free in bona fide baggage. The Ministry of Finance announced the rules on 2 February 2026; its announcement describes revised provisions for international passengers.
This specific laptop allowance is separate from the passenger’s general baggage allowance. Passenger allowances cannot be pooled, and the laptop provision applies to bona fide passenger baggage—not to an online purchase shipped to India.
Ordering a laptop by courier or post
A shipped purchase does not qualify for the passenger laptop allowance. For personal imports assessed under CTH 9804, Bengaluru International Courier Terminal guidance describes a calculation that totals 30.98% of the assessable value. Mumbai Customs publishes the same general structure, subject to goods not falling within an exempted category.

The total and component rates are the treatment described in the Bengaluru International Courier Terminal FAQ (2025) and corroborated by Mumbai Customs Zone-I postal guidance. They are not a universal promise for every laptop parcel. Classification, route, origin, exemptions and Customs’ assessment can affect the bill.
Why 18% GST is not the whole import cost
CBIC’s goods-rate schedule lists heading 8471—automatic data processing machines and units—at 18% IGST. For domestic supplies, the schedule shows 9% CGST plus 9% SGST/UTGST. The GST rate reference is not the same as the total amount payable on an imported laptop.

Under the Integrated Goods and Services Tax Act, IGST on imported goods is collected through the Customs Tariff Act mechanism, using the value determined under that mechanism when customs duties are levied. Consequently, multiplying a foreign retail price by 18% does not by itself calculate the full import charge.
Check the likely assessment before ordering
- Identify the route: passenger baggage, courier, or post. Do not apply the passenger allowance to a shipped purchase.
- Use ICEGATE’s import duty enquiry system to search by tariff heading or description; enter the country of origin when relevant. The portal notes that origin can matter for preferential or anti-dumping duties.
- For a shipment, confirm the assessable value and proposed classification with the carrier. Include the shipment details they use for the declaration rather than assuming the foreign sticker price is the customs value.
- If the bill of entry uses a classification or exemption treatment you did not expect, ask the carrier or Customs to explain the assessment before relying on a percentage estimate.

Do not rely on older baggage-duty summaries
Some older CBIC passenger guidance remains indexed and quotes 38.5% baggage duty alongside earlier allowance rules. That legacy figure should not be applied to the eligible passenger’s one-laptop allowance under the 2026 rules. CBIC’s International Travellers page, last updated 18 July 2026, lists the 2026 rules; the operative laptop provision is in the notified text, not the older summary.
