Landmark Admin initially reported that a 2024 cyberattack potentially affected 806,519 people, but a later supplemental filing increased the reported population to 1,613,773. The incident involved files that may have contained sensitive insurance, financial, medical and identity information. Landmark detected suspicious activity on May 13, 2024, and reported an incident period running through June 17, 2024.

A related class-action settlement received final approval on January 29, 2026. The settlement administrator says payments to valid claimants began May 8, 2026, but the ordinary claim deadline—December 26, 2025—has passed.

State breach filings list the incident period as May 13 through June 17, 2024. The available notices say files were accessed or potentially accessible during the incident and may have contained personal information. They do not establish that every record was downloaded, that every listed data type was exposed for every person, or that the information was used fraudulently.

The incident has not been publicly attributed to a named threat actor. Public reporting also did not establish that it was ransomware. The most accurate descriptions are cyberattack, security incident or hacking incident.

Landmark’s initial notice was dated October 23, 2024. Later filings and notices expanded the reported affected population and provided additional identity-protection benefits.

The initial Maine Attorney General filing lists the original incident details and affected count.

How many people were affected?

The answer depends on which filing is being cited:

Filing or update Reported population
Initial October 2024 disclosure 806,519 people
Later supplemental filing 1,613,773 people

The later figure is more than double the original count. It should be used when describing the current reported scope of the incident, while the older 806,519 figure explains why early coverage used a headline of roughly 800,000 people.

These figures describe people whose information was potentially implicated, accessed, compromised or impacted. They do not prove that exactly 1,613,773 people had data stolen or that every person suffered identity theft.

  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

The supplemental filing listed 1,528 Maine residents. It said notification letters were mailed between October 23, 2024, and April 10, 2025. Multiple state filings can represent updates to the same incident; they should not be counted as separate breaches.

See the supplemental Maine filing for the updated count and protection package.

What information may have been exposed?

The original notice listed these categories, although the information varied by individual:

  • Name and address
  • Social Security number
  • Tax identification number
  • Driver’s-license number or state-issued identification-card number
  • Passport number
  • Financial-account number
  • Medical information
  • Date of birth
  • Health-insurance policy number
  • Life and annuity policy information

A breach notice’s inclusion of a data category does not mean that category applied to every affected person. Check the individual letter for the specific information Landmark said may have been involved in your record.

Why would Landmark Admin have this information?

Landmark Admin is an insurance administrative-services provider, not necessarily the insurance company a consumer recognizes. Third-party administrators perform back-office work such as new-business processing and claims administration for insurers and other financial-services organizations.

Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts

That means a policyholder may be affected even if “Landmark Admin” does not appear on an insurance card, premium statement or customer-service record. The original reporting and related litigation identified relationships involving American Monumental Life Insurance Company, Pellerin Life Insurance Company, American Benefit Life Insurance Company, Liberty Bankers Life Insurance Company, Continental Mutual Insurance Company and Capitol Life Insurance Company.

This does not mean every customer of those insurers was affected. Potential eligibility depended on whether the individual’s information was included in the incident population.

What protection did Landmark offer?

The initial filing described 12 months of credit monitoring through IDX. The later supplemental filing described a broader 12-month theft-protection package that included:

  • Credit monitoring
  • CyberScan monitoring
  • A $1 million insurance-reimbursement policy
  • Managed identity-theft recovery

If you received a legitimate notice with an enrollment code and the enrollment period has not expired, use the instructions in that notice. Do not assume that a monitoring service prevents identity theft. Monitoring can alert you to certain warning signs, but it cannot undo exposure or guarantee that fraudulent activity will be blocked.

Before paying for a separate identity-protection subscription, check whether Landmark’s no-cost benefits are still active or whether you already enrolled. A paid service may duplicate those benefits and is not a substitute for a settlement claim.

What should affected consumers do now?

1. Locate the breach letter

Find the original letter and confirm which information categories applied to you. If you are unsure whether a message is genuine, do not use links or phone numbers supplied in an unsolicited email or text. Verify information through official state records or the official settlement website.

2. Check your credit reports

Review your credit reports through the federally authorized free-credit-report channel and look for unfamiliar accounts, inquiries, addresses or collection activity. Pay particular attention if your Social Security number, identification number or financial-account information was listed in your notice.

3. Consider a fraud alert or credit freeze

A fraud alert asks businesses to take additional steps to verify your identity before opening new credit. A security freeze restricts access to your credit file until you lift it. These tools are different from monitoring and can be more useful than immediately buying a subscription.

4. Monitor financial accounts

Review bank, brokerage, insurance and other financial accounts for unfamiliar withdrawals, transfers, beneficiaries or profile changes. Contact the institution promptly through a trusted number if you see suspicious activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Protect against follow-up phishing

Do not provide Social Security numbers, passwords, one-time codes or payment information to an unsolicited caller claiming to provide breach assistance. Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available, especially for email and financial accounts.

Is compensation still available?

The incident led to a class-action lawsuit involving Landmark Admin and several insurance companies. The settlement website says the court entered final judgment on January 29, 2026. The overall settlement obligation was capped at $6 million, including monetary benefits, notice, administration, attorneys’ fees and related costs.

The settlement website says payments to valid claimants began May 8, 2026. However, claims generally had to be submitted online or mailed with a postmark by December 26, 2025. That deadline has passed as of September 2026.

If you submitted a claim on time and have not received a payment or need to update a payment issue, contact the official settlement administrator through the Landmark Data Settlement contact page. If you did not file by the deadline, contact the administrator to ask whether any court-approved exception applies, but do not assume a late claim will be accepted or that you are entitled to a payment.

Being included in the breach population and qualifying for a settlement payment are not identical questions. Settlement eligibility depends on the court-approved class definition and the claim requirements. The official settlement FAQ says the class broadly covers U.S. residents, including people stationed abroad with the U.S. military, whose private information was potentially implicated, accessed, compromised or impacted, including people who received a notification letter.

Important distinctions to keep in mind

  • Potentially exposed is not the same as confirmed stolen. The notices describe files and information that may have been subject to unauthorized access.
  • Landmark Admin is not the settlement administrator. The settlement website is a court-supervised claims and information site, not necessarily Landmark Admin’s corporate website.
  • The 1.6 million figure is an updated reported count. It does not mean every person had every listed type of information exposed.
  • Monitoring is not prevention. It may identify certain warning signs but cannot guarantee protection from misuse.
  • The settlement deadline is closed under the ordinary schedule. Do not rely on old articles that imply claims are still open.

Timeline

  • May 13, 2024: Landmark detected suspicious activity and shut down systems and remote access.
  • May 13–June 17, 2024: Reported incident period in state records.
  • June 12 and June 26, 2024: Substitute and media notices were reported in a later filing.
  • October 23, 2024: Initial written consumer-notification date; the original filing reported 806,519 affected people.
  • October 23, 2024–April 10, 2025: Supplemental notification period listed in the later filing.
  • April 10–11, 2025: Supplemental filings reflected the expanded affected population.
  • December 26, 2025: Ordinary settlement-claim deadline.
  • January 29, 2026: Final order and judgment entered.
  • May 8, 2026: Settlement payments began for valid claimants, according to the settlement administrator.

What remains unknown?

Publicly available notices and reporting do not establish who was responsible, whether ransomware was used, precisely which files were exfiltrated, or whether exposed information was later sold or misused. Those limits matter: consumers should take sensible precautions without treating the incident as proof that fraud has already occurred.
