For Labour Day and certain other Monday public holidays, general retailers in Perth may trade from 8am to 6pm under the extended-hours arrangement—four hours wider than the former 11am–5pm window. Those are permitted hours, not a required schedule: each shop chooses whether and when to open. The rule is specific to Western Australia, and regional permissions depend on location.
What time do shops open on Labour Day in Perth?
The extended window allows general retail shops to trade between 8am and 6pm on approved public holidays. The change replaced the earlier 11am–5pm window, giving retailers four additional hours across the day. It does not mean every store opens at 8am or stays open until 6pm.
The arrangement first applied to Labour Day in Perth on 6 March 2023, according to PerthNow’s report published 23 February 2023. That is a historical date, not the date of the next Labour Day.
Which places are covered?
Perth metropolitan area
The original 2023 change covered the Perth metropolitan area. It expanded the permitted Monday public-holiday trading window there; it was not a national Australian change.

Regional Western Australia
Regional trading permissions are not uniform. The WA Government’s 6 October 2026 announcement lists Labour Day among the 2027 public holidays approved for 8am–6pm general-retail trading in Perth and some regional areas. Check the government’s current announcement and location-specific trading-hours information before relying on the extended hours for a regional town.
Does every shop have to open for the full window?
No. The hours describe when eligible businesses are allowed to trade, not when they must trade. A retailer may select its own opening and closing times within the approved window, and an individual store may remain closed. Check that store’s own holiday schedule for its actual hours.

Which other public holidays are included?
The 2023 metropolitan extension also covered Easter Monday, WA Day and the King’s Birthday. The PerthNow report said the Monday-holiday change did not apply to Good Friday, Anzac Day or Christmas Day. Holiday rules can differ by date, location and type of business, so consult current official information rather than assuming the same hours apply on every public holiday.

How to check the hours for a specific shop
- Confirm the location. Establish whether the shop is in the Perth metropolitan area or a regional locality, where permissions may vary.
- Check the official trading-hours information. Use the WA Government’s location-specific guidance to confirm whether extended hours are approved for that place and holiday.
- Check the retailer’s own notice. The legal trading window does not establish an individual shop’s opening time; look for its Labour Day hours before travelling.
