The widely reported 2022 comparison put Real Madrid’s offer at €30 million net per year for five years, plus an unspecified signing bonus, and PSG’s at €50 million over three years. Those figures came from media reports, not published offer documents—and they are not a clean like-for-like comparison: the reports describe different contract lengths and do not state the PSG figure’s net-or-gross basis in the same way.
What Real Madrid and PSG reportedly offered in 2022
In May 2022, Foot Mercato relayed figures attributed to Spain’s Marca: Madrid proposed a five-year deal paying €30 million net annually, with a signing bonus whose amount was not specified. PSG reportedly offered €50 million over three years. The report described the offers as similar in total salary, while noting that Madrid’s signing bonus could affect the comparison. Foot Mercato’s report does not establish a matching net-or-gross basis for PSG’s €50 million figure.
That difference matters. “€50 million over three years” does not say whether the figure is annual or total in the same way as Madrid’s stated annual salary, nor does it provide the same detail about tax basis. It should not be treated as a confirmed, directly comparable contract total. The reported Madrid salary alone would amount to €150 million net over five years if paid at that rate throughout; that calculation excludes its unquantified signing bonus and is not a verified value for the whole offer.
Why other 2022 figures appear in reports
Coverage from different points in 2022 described separate proposals and, later, claims about the PSG agreement. They should not be combined into one definitive package.

PSG’s prospective renewal offer in April
BBC Sport reported on 8 April 2022 that PSG was prepared to offer Mbappé a £150 million signing-on fee and £21 million net annual salary for two more years. BBC also reported that PSG had previously offered a £125 million signing-on fee. These were figures for a prospective renewal, reported in pounds; they are distinct from the later May comparison reported in euros. BBC Sport’s April report does not make these amounts interchangeable with the later figures.
A later, disputed breakdown of the PSG deal
In October 2022, Sky TG24 summarized a Le Parisien report claiming a three-year PSG contract with €216 million in salary, a €180 million signing bonus and a €240 million conditional loyalty bonus. Sky also reported that PSG disputed the article’s accuracy and details. The report’s component figures are claims about the signed agreement, not proof of the terms of every earlier offer. Its headline and text give inconsistent overall totals, so the components are more useful than a single grand total.

What Mbappé’s eventual Real Madrid deal reportedly included
Mbappé joined Real Madrid in 2024 after his PSG contract expired. Reports agreed on a five-year Madrid agreement but gave different financial terms, and those accounts should remain separate.
- BBC Sport reported a €15 million annual salary and a €150 million signing-on bonus paid across five years. It said Mbappé retained a percentage of his image rights. BBC’s account describes the agreement announced in June 2024.
- The Guardian reported annual pay of €15–20 million, with increments, a €125 million signing-on bonus spread over five years, and 80% of image rights. The Guardian’s account gives a different bonus estimate and salary description.
The available reports do not resolve the discrepancy between the €150 million and €125 million signing-on estimates. Neither should be silently substituted for the other.

What the later PSG payment dispute does—and does not—show
In September 2024, the LFP legal commission ordered PSG to pay nearly €55 million gross in claimed unpaid salary and bonuses. Le Monde reported that the commission found no documented amendment or proven oral waiver; PSG said it would pursue the matter in court. Le Monde’s account concerns claimed amounts under the employment deal and the parties’ dispute. It is not a final court judgment and does not authenticate every earlier media report about offers.

A headline figure can obscure what a player would actually receive. For any reported football contract offer, check these points before comparing totals:
Rank #4
- Stage: Is it a prospective offer, a revised offer, a report about a signed agreement, or a later payment claim?
- Duration: A yearly salary and a multi-year total describe different things.
- Tax basis: Net pay and gross pay are not equivalent; the reports do not consistently specify the basis.
- Bonuses: A signing-on fee may be paid over time, while a loyalty bonus may depend on conditions.
- Image rights: A reported share can be a distinct part of compensation, but coverage may not describe it consistently.
- Currency and date: The April 2022 report uses pounds, while the May comparison and later deal reports use euros. Without an exchange rate and date, keep the figures in their original currencies.
Because the cited coverage does not reproduce authenticated complete offer documents, these numbers are best described as reported terms—not confirmed clauses from each negotiating proposal.
