It later closed up 14,137.55 points, or 9.32%, at 165,811.00. Contemporaneous reports linked the rally to US-Iran ceasefire news; that timing does not prove the news was the move’s sole cause or that the rise would last.
How much did the KSE-100 rise?
The previous close was 151,673.45. Shortly after the market opened on April 8, Dawn reported the index at 164,035.83, up 12,362.38 points, or 8.15%. Trading was then temporarily suspended under PSX regulations, according to the report.
By 3:08 p.m., Dawn reported the index at 165,598.92, a gain of 13,925.47 points (9.18%) from the prior close. It finished the session at 165,811.00, up 14,137.55 points, or 9.32%. Dawn described the closing point gain as the largest single-day gain in PSX history at the time, surpassing the previous reported record of 10,123 points on May 12, 2025. Dawn’s April 8 report.
Radio Pakistan’s event-day account reported an earlier snapshot: the index had moved from 151,673 the previous day to 163,488, a rise of 11,815 points. That was not the closing figure; the two reports describe different observation times. Radio Pakistan’s April 8 account.

Why did the market rally?
Contemporaneous reporting connected the rally with news of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, describing the news as lifting market sentiment. That is a reported catalyst, not proof that ceasefire news alone caused the entire move. The available reporting does not isolate the contribution of other factors or establish that the event changed the market’s underlying fundamentals.
What does the KSE-100 measure?
The KSE-100 tracks the largest 100 companies listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange by free-float market capitalization, subject to sector representation rules, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). Its movement describes an index, not the return earned by every investor: individual holdings can rise or fall by different amounts, and an investor’s result also depends on what they own and when they buy or sell. How does the one-day surge fit the market’s broader performance?
The April 8 gain came after a volatile quarter. SECP’s Q3 FY2026 review recorded a 14.54% decline in the KSE-100 during the quarter and a 22.57% peak-to-trough drawdown between the January 2026 high and March low. The review linked that quarter’s sell-off to multiple external shocks, including regional conflict and energy-price concerns; those explanations concern the earlier decline, not the cause of the April 8 rally.
Later, an independent platform, PSX Invest, reported that the index rose 3.6% month on month in June 2026 and described sentiment as improving after a US-Iran peace deal, among other macroeconomic factors. That later monthly figure is separate context, not part of the April 8 session result. PSX Invest says it is not affiliated with PSX or SECP and is not a licensed investment adviser, broker, asset manager, or financial institution. PSX Invest’s June 2026 report.

What the headline numbers do—and do not—show
- Intraday versus close: the 12,362.38-point increase was an early-session observation; 14,137.55 points was the final close-to-close gain.
- Points versus percentage: the point gain measures the change in index level, while 9.32% expresses the closing gain relative to the previous close.
- One session versus a trend: a sharp rebound is a single day’s result. On its own, it cannot establish that the market has entered a sustained rise or predict future returns.
