The Pakistan Stock Exchange’s KSE-100 first closed above 185,000 on January 6, 2026, finishing at 185,062.11 according to Business Recorder. The milestone was a historical close, not the index’s current level: the PSX Data Portal recorded 168,460.10 at the October 6, 2026 close.
What happened on January 6
The KSE-100 rose 2,653.87 points, or 1.45%, from its previous close of 182,408.23. Business Recorder reported a close of 185,062.11; Pakistan Today reported 185,062.10, a one-hundredth-point difference. Pakistan Today also reported an intraday high of 185,254.47, which is distinct from the closing level. Business Recorder’s January 6 report and Pakistan Today’s account describe the session.
Which sectors were reported as gaining?
Pakistan Today described buying across automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, fertilizer, oil and gas exploration, oil marketing companies, power generation and refineries. That is a report of broad sector participation, not evidence that every company in those industries—or every listed share—rose.
Why did the index rise?
Business Recorder reported that analysts attributed the January 6 buying to expectations of a further policy-rate cut at the next Monetary Policy Committee meeting. That was a market explanation offered at the time, not proof that rate-cut expectations alone caused the rally.

What analysts said about January 16
Business Recorder quoted Sana Tawfik, Head of Research at Arif Habib Limited, saying, “There has been fresh buying from funds and institutional investors, while selling pressure has largely subsided.” She also linked market expectations to lower yields at the preceding Pakistan Investment Bonds auction and the possibility of a rate cut at the upcoming MPC meeting. These are her attributed assessments of the market, not independently established causes of the index’s rise. Business Recorder’s report contains the comments.

What the KSE-100 represents—and what it does not
The PSX describes the KSE-100 as its best-known index of the largest companies by market capitalization. Its constituents represent all market sectors, and the index accounts for 85% of the Exchange’s market capitalization. It uses free-float market-capitalization methodology. Those features help explain why the index is widely watched, but its movement does not mean every listed company rose or that the index measures the entire economy. See the PSX index description.

Not at the latest dated snapshot available here: the PSX Data Portal showed a close of 168,460.10 on October 6, 2026, down from the 185,000 threshold. The same snapshot listed a 52-week range of 144,119.44–191,032.73 and a session gain of 2,592.79 points (1.56%). The index also reached levels above 185,000 after January, so that threshold was not its all-time high. These are figures for October 6, not live quotes; market levels change each session.
