Kroger plans to eliminate approximately 3,000 corporate jobs over the next three years, according to an internal memo from CEO Greg Foran reported by Grocery Dive on Oct. 12, 2026. The report says Kroger expects to begin communicating decisions about affected roles in the coming months, but it does not identify departments, locations, a detailed schedule or severance terms.
What Kroger has announced
The reported plan is for approximately 3,000 corporate jobs to be cut over three years. This is a planned reduction, not a report that all of the jobs have already been eliminated. The account is based on a memo Kroger shared with Grocery Dive; a company-hosted announcement or complete public copy of the current memo was not available in the cited coverage.

Foran said the company had “more layers, more handoffs and more overhead than we need.” He also cited technology as a means to improve efficiency and reduce duplicated work. In the memo, he described the goal as moving resources closer to customers, lowering prices, investing in associates and improving the shopping experience.
Which Kroger employees are affected?
The report describes the plan as affecting corporate jobs, but does not name specific departments, roles or locations. It does not say whether any particular corporate function is included or excluded, and it does not establish that store employees are affected. Kroger’s communication about impacted roles is expected to begin in the coming months; individual notification dates have not been reported.

The coverage also does not state severance arrangements or other support for affected employees. Those details should not be assumed from the reported headcount or from Kroger’s earlier workforce reduction.
How this differs from Kroger’s 2025 cuts
Kroger had already reduced its corporate administrative workforce in 2025. The company’s FY2025 Form 10-K says it approved and implemented a plan in the second quarter of 2025 to reduce the corporate administrative team by nearly 1,000 associates, recording $47 million in severance and related benefit costs. The filing said the reorganization was intended to improve efficiency and lower administrative costs so the company could reinvest in retail.

| Measure | 2025 reduction | Reported 2026 plan |
|---|---|---|
| Workforce described | Nearly 1,000 corporate administrative associates, according to Kroger’s FY2025 Form 10-K. | Approximately 3,000 corporate jobs, according to the memo reported by Grocery Dive. |
| Status | Approved and implemented in Q2 2025, according to the filing. | Planned; the report does not say the cuts have been completed. |
| Timing | Second quarter of 2025. | Over the next three years; role communications are expected to start in coming months, with no more specific schedule reported. |
| Stated rationale | Improve efficiency and reduce administrative costs, according to the filing. | Reduce excess layers, handoffs, overhead and duplicated work, as described in Foran’s reported memo. |
| Cost or reinvestment details | $47 million in severance and related benefit costs, according to the filing. A prior message by then-chairman and CEO Ron Sargent, reproduced in an employee Reddit post, said savings would support lower prices, more store-team hours, new-store growth and real-estate capabilities. | The cited report does not state severance costs or specify how savings from this plan will be allocated. |
The earlier reinvestment message is not evidence that the 2026 plan guarantees the same uses or outcomes.
