Gaming startups raised $472 million in venture capital in Q2 2023, down 38% from the prior quarter, according to Konvoy. At the same time, Drake Star reported $6.2 billion in gaming mergers and acquisitions—but one deal, Savvy Games Group’s $4.9 billion purchase of Scopely, accounted for nearly 80% of that value. The figures describe different kinds of activity: constrained startup financing alongside a quarter dominated by a handful of large transactions, not a broad-based wave of studio sales.
How much did gaming startups raise in Q2 2023?
Konvoy counted $472 million in gaming venture funding across 85 deals in Q2 2023. That was 38% less funding and 22% fewer deals than in Q1, according to its Q2 2023 report. A contemporaneous account by PocketGamer.biz put Q1 funding at $761 million, making the quarter-to-quarter drop $289 million.
The decline was not simply a matter of fewer transactions. Konvoy’s figures, as reported by PocketGamer.biz, show growth funding falling from $329 million in Q1 to $131 million in Q2—a reduction of about 60%. The stage mix also skewed heavily toward earlier companies:
- Early stage: 77 deals.
- Growth stage: eight deals.
- Late stage: no funding recorded for the sixth consecutive quarter, according to PocketGamer.biz’s account of Konvoy’s data.
These counts indicate where deals occurred, not how much each stage raised. The public Konvoy report page gives headline figures, while PocketGamer provides the reported stage breakdown; the accessible material does not establish detailed inclusion criteria or methodology.

Where was the reported funding concentrated?
PocketGamer.biz reported this regional breakdown of Konvoy’s Q2 figures:
| Region | Reported funding |
|---|---|
| Asia | $221 million |
| North America | $141 million |
| Europe | $102 million |
The article also described smaller amounts in Australia and South America and no deals in other markets. The three listed regional amounts total $464 million, not the $472 million global headline; the available account does not explain the difference or provide enough detail to reconcile geographic classifications. Treat the regional figures as reported breakdowns, not a complete accounting of the global total.
Why was venture funding falling?
The clearest factor in the reported quarter-over-quarter comparison is the pullback in growth funding: it fell by $198 million, from $329 million to $131 million. That helps explain why total funding dropped much faster than deal count. The figures alone do not establish a single underlying cause, such as weaker game demand, tighter lender conditions, or a deliberate shift by every investor; they show the amount and mix of financing that Konvoy recorded.

Konvoy’s report page also listed public-market performance and cash balances among its topics and included a $201 billion gaming-market forecast for 2023. That was a forecast made at the time, not a measured result for the year. The public page does not provide enough accessible detail to use those subjects as a quantified explanation for the Q2 funding decline.

M&A is the purchase or combination of businesses; venture funding is capital raised by companies, typically through an investment in exchange for equity. They are not interchangeable measures, and the Q2 figures came from different publishers and datasets.
| Measure | Reported Q2 2023 figure | Publisher and reporting basis |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming venture funding | $472 million across 85 deals | Konvoy; reported on its Q2 report page |
| Disclosed private funding | $663 million across 196 deals | Drake Star, as reported by GamesBeat |
| Gaming M&A deal value | $6.2 billion | Drake Star, as reported by GamesBeat |
Drake Star’s disclosed private-funding total is not a correction to Konvoy’s venture-funding figure: the measures and reporting frameworks differ. Likewise, the $6.2 billion M&A amount is transaction value, not venture capital raised by gaming startups. GamesBeat’s coverage of Drake Star’s Q2 report supplies the M&A and private-funding figures.

Why did the quarter look “ripe for M&A”?
When raising new capital becomes harder, a sale or merger can be one possible route for a studio or investor seeking liquidity, while a buyer with capital can acquire assets or expand its business. That makes consolidation a plausible market thesis amid constrained financing. It does not mean that every studio was ready to sell, that every company was an attractive acquisition target, or that the trend would continue.
The quarter’s headline M&A value was highly concentrated:

- Rovio: Sega’s acquisition was reported at $776.2 million, or 12.5% of the quarter’s M&A value.
Those two transactions account for nearly all of the cited total. As a result, $6.2 billion should not be read as evidence that typical studios were being acquired at similar prices or that deal activity was evenly distributed. It is a quarterly aggregate strongly shaped by mega-deals.

What the numbers do—and do not—say to founders and investors
For a founder planning financing, the stage mix is more informative than the aggregate alone: Konvoy’s reported 77 early-stage deals and eight growth deals show that activity was concentrated earlier, while growth funding was sharply lower. Those figures describe the market in Q2 2023; they do not predict what an individual studio can raise or establish a current financing environment.
For anyone comparing reports, check the measure and scope before comparing totals: funding value versus deal count, early-stage versus growth or late-stage activity, quarter-over-quarter versus year-over-year changes, disclosed funding versus total transaction value, venture financing versus M&A, and each publisher’s geographic coverage. Konvoy’s report page does not expose its full methodology, and the M&A figures here are GamesBeat’s reporting of Drake Star rather than a directly reviewed full Drake Star report.
Drake Star partner Michael Metzger told GamesBeat: “There are more gaming investors out there than ever,” while noting, “Everybody’s still more selective than last year or the specifically the year before, but the number of funds focused on the sector is a positive indication of the opportunities.” The quote captures the distinction between investor presence and willingness to deploy: a large number of sector-focused funds does not mean every studio can secure financing.
