Kodak’s reported shutdown was a temporary, factory-wide pause in November 2024 at its Rochester, New York, facility, undertaken to modernize film manufacturing. Kodak had built inventory ahead of the pause, according to a report on the company’s earnings call. That buffer was not a guarantee that every film stock would remain available at every retailer. Kodak’s later filings describe consumer-film backorders, while also reporting that hiring and equipment investment helped reduce them. The 2024 pause is over; whether a specific film is in stock now depends on the seller and format.
What happened at Kodak’s Rochester factory?
On November 27, 2024, PetaPixel reported that Kodak had temporarily stopped all film production at its Rochester, New York, factory during November to modernize the facility and improve its ability to meet rising demand. The report quoted CEO Jim Continenza describing a “total shutdown.”
PetaPixel also reported that Kodak had increased production in the months before the pause and built inventory to protect stock during the shutdown. The report did not give a quantity for that inventory buffer, so it cannot establish how much film was available or how long it could cover demand.
Kodak’s November 12, 2024, third-quarter results release provides company-level context: Kodak said its legacy Advanced Materials & Chemicals film business was growing rapidly and that it was investing capital expenditure to increase capacity. The release supports the capacity-investment rationale, although it does not describe the shutdown itself. Kodak’s CEO said, “Our legacy AM&C film business is growing rapidly, and we are investing capex to increase capacity to meet demand.”

Did the pause mean Kodak stopped making film permanently?
No. The shutdown was described as temporary and tied to modernization, not as a permanent end to film production. Kodak’s later product listings and notices also show film products continuing to appear in its portfolio after 2024. Those listings establish product activity, not the production status of every item at every moment.
Could Kodak film still be harder to find?
Yes, supply pressure can occur independently of the 2024 shutdown. In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Kodak said increased demand for consumer film, equipment limitations, and labor shortages had contributed to increased backorders in its Advanced Materials and Chemicals segment. Kodak also said it had added headcount and invested in equipment upgrades and new equipment, reducing backorders and improving operating efficiency. It cautioned that further demand could continue to strain equipment and labor without additional investment or hiring.

The filing does not state how many units were backordered, and it is company-level information rather than a live inventory report for a particular film, size, country, or retailer. It indicates that constraints have affected Kodak’s ability to meet demand, but cannot tell a shopper whether a specific item is available today.

Kodak’s consumer still-film catalog lists GOLD 200, KODACOLOR 100, KODACOLOR 200, and ULTRAMAX 400. GOLD 200 is listed in both 135 (35mm) and 120 formats. Kodak’s August 2026 motion-picture product notice lists new 65 mm x 400 ft EKTACHROME, VERITA, and VISION3 film products. The motion-picture notice is evidence of continued product activity, but those products are not the same as consumer still-film formats.

How to check whether a particular stock is available
- Identify the exact stock and format. For example, GOLD 200 in 135 (35mm) is a different listing from GOLD 200 in 120.
- Check the retailer you plan to use. Search its current product listing or contact the seller; Kodak’s catalog and company filings do not provide live, SKU-level retail inventory.
- Confirm the listing’s details before relying on it. Check the format, quantity, shipping destination, and whether the page says the item is available to order rather than merely listed.
- If you need another source, use Kodak’s store locator. Availability still needs to be confirmed with the store because locator listings do not guarantee stock on hand.
