PerthNow reported that Kmart Marketplace removed a third-party listing for 8-gram nitrous oxide cream charger bulbs after criticism circulated on social media. The listing was described as being for whipped-cream dispensers, a culinary use distinct from inhaling the gas. The report did not include a response from Kmart explaining either the listing or its removal.
What was the nitrous oxide product listed on Kmart Marketplace?
In a report published on 21 November 2025, PerthNow journalist Tegwen Bescoby said a third-party seller had recently listed “Cream Charger Bulbs for Whipped Cream Dispensers” on Kmart Marketplace. The 8-gram bulbs contain nitrous oxide, which can be used in a dispenser to make whipped cream. PerthNow also noted that some people misuse the gas by releasing it into a balloon and inhaling it. Those are different uses; the product’s kitchen purpose does not make inhalation safe.
PerthNow’s report is the source for the listing description and events below. The original social-media post and Kmart’s listing records are not available here, so the account of the listing and its removal should be understood as reported, not independently confirmed.
Why did the listing draw criticism?
PerthNow said someone shared the discovery in a Facebook group it described as having 220,000 users. The original poster wrote, “I think someone from Kmart’s PR team needs a tip off.” The report quoted one commenter calling the situation “so freakin’ sad man” and another describing the listing decision as “so wild.” These are examples of reactions reported by PerthNow, not a measure of how the wider public felt. The group’s reported membership is not the number of people who reacted to the post.

Did Kmart remove the listing?
PerthNow reported that Kmart removed the item after the social-media backlash and said it had sought comment from the retailer. Its article did not contain a Kmart response or explain why the seller had been allowed to list the product, or why the listing was taken down.
Are nangs legal in Australia?
There is no single state-level set of buying rules that can be applied across Australia. PerthNow quoted a Therapeutic Goods Administration spokesperson as saying: “The TGA does not regulate the sale of nitrous oxide. Under the Poisons Standard, monitoring of compliance and enforcement of the controls on access to nitrous oxide is the responsibility of states and territories.” That is the TGA’s reported explanation of who oversees access controls; it is not a substitute for checking the rules in the buyer’s state or territory.

PerthNow broadly reported that no federal law restricts sale, but that should not be treated as a complete legal conclusion. The state examples below differ, and one set of rules is not in force until November 2026.

For Western Australia, PerthNow reported that laws changed in October 2024 to restrict bulb size and purchasers, ban larger “mega nangs” and introduce penalties. Those details come from the news report and were not independently checked against current WA government guidance, so they should not be relied on as a complete statement of current WA law. What are the health risks of inhaling nitrous oxide?
The US Food and Drug Administration advises consumers not to inhale nitrous oxide chargers, canisters or tanks. It lists potential serious effects including asphyxiation, frostbite, abnormal blood counts, neurological effects and death. The FDA also warns that repeated inhalation can cause prolonged neurological effects, including spinal cord or brain damage, even after a person stops. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said on 1 September 2026 that Australia’s consumer-law framework has limitations around online marketplaces and described work on possible reforms, including marketplace obligations. Commissioner Luke Woodward said consumers should be able to trust that products bought online are safe, while sellers based overseas or marketplaces that are not the direct supplier can make it difficult to prevent unsafe goods from reaching consumers. This is general marketplace context: the ACCC did not make a finding about the Kmart listing or establish that this particular product was unsafe or unlawful.
