KLM Planned 100 Flight Cancellations for Schiphol Strike, Affecting About 27,000 Passengers

KLM announced that it would cancel 100 flights and affect about 27,000 passengers during a two-hour ground-staff strike at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol on September 10, 2025. Those figures were the airline’s advance estimates, not a confirmed final count. The stoppage was scheduled for 8–10 a.m. local time, but KLM warned that disruption could continue as operations recovered.

What happened at Schiphol

KLM ground staff planned to stop work from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on September 10, 2025. The action concerned KLM ground operations at Schiphol, not an airline-wide strike across all Air France-KLM operations. Reported ground duties included loading and unloading baggage, moving aircraft, and assisting passengers. Reuters reporting carried by The Straits Times covered KLM’s announcement on September 9; NL Times also reported the strike window and duties.

How many flights and passengers were affected?

KLM’s spokesperson told Reuters that the airline planned to cancel 100 flights and that about 27,000 passengers would be affected. These were announced estimates ahead of the action. “Affected” does not mean all 27,000 passengers were stranded, and the figures should not be read as a verified final tally.

Later reports gave different cancellation counts because they described different reporting bases:

Report Figure What it represents
Reuters, carried by The Straits Times, September 9, 2025 100 flights KLM’s advance cancellation plan.
NL Times, September 16, 2025 More than 100 cancellations Retrospective report about the September 10 action.
EUclaim, September 12, 2025 202 cancellations EUclaim’s count based on its own flight data, not an official KLM final total.

The figures are not interchangeable: one was KLM’s advance plan, while the later counts came from separate reporting and data sources. The available reports do not establish a single independently verified final count.

Why a two-hour strike could disrupt flights for longer

The planned work stoppage lasted two hours, but its effects were not necessarily limited to that window. Ground operations support aircraft turnarounds and passenger handling; when those tasks are interrupted, flights and schedules can take time to recover. KLM warned that disruption could last beyond the strike period. The two-hour duration therefore describes the announced stoppage, not a guarantee that every affected flight would be back on schedule by 10 a.m.

What passengers were told to do

At the time, KLM said it was working to rebook passengers. NL Times quoted the airline in September 2025: “First and foremost, we are working hard to rebook all passenger so they arrive at their destination as quickly as possible,” the report said. That was the airline’s stated response, not a guarantee of a particular rebooking time or outcome.

  • For a current or future disruption, check your booking directly with the airline and follow its current guidance; the September 2025 reports do not establish a procedure that applies today.
  • Use the airline’s notice about your specific flight to confirm whether it is cancelled or changed rather than inferring its status from the overall cancellation figures.

The labor dispute and a separate planned action

The September 10 stoppage took place amid disagreement over KLM’s collective labor agreement. NL Times reported that unions argued around 14,000 ground employees would lose purchasing power under the agreement; KLM disputed that claim. NL Times’ September 16 report also discussed a planned four-hour follow-up action for September 17. That was a separate planned event, not part of the two-hour September 10 strike.
